I have had an hp FlatBed ScanJet 4200C for some time. I had it on a second computer which was running Windows XP home edition. The Scanner has a USB connection. It used to work fine altough I did have to download updated scanner software to get it to work with XP. I recently upgraded that computer with a new MOBO and CPU, otherwise it's the same system except that i did have to do a clean windows xp install. Windows loads the drivers for the scanner and it's seen in device manager and there are no conflicts BUT when I install the scanner software I get an error message saying that no scanner is connected. I know I have the correct drivers and the same software as before.I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling but always the same error message. Any ideas? I don't use the scanner for much, but it's useful sometimes and I hate to have to buy a new one.

Thanks,

Robzzz

I checked out the post for problems with the hp 6200 series and followed the links and fixed the problem. I guess USB connection problems and HP scanners are not new!!!!!

I had initial problems with the 4200c scanner on winxp.
I downloaded the official 2.0.3 drivers from HP. sj655en.exe file.
I installed the drivers. Scanner found by Winxp, drivers installed.
I start Precision Scan LT software. It hangs, it never comes back. Scanner never works. I have to end-task on PrecisionScanLT software.
The scanner is useless in Winxp.

Yet!!! it worked fine in Win2k. What gives???

I did this to resolve the issue. Not sure if this was the root fix or not. Highlight the C:\SCANJET\PrecisionScanLT\hpprsclt.exe file. right click and select properties. Set compatability mode to Win98.

if that doesn't work, I tried these items, during my troubleshooting adventure.
No guarantee any of this will work. Quite a bit of non-standard tweaking here...
a> Uninstalled PrecisionScanLT software

b> Went back to the HP site and downloaded this file, sj654mu.exe. "updated drivers for Winxp" or so they claim. I ran it. It installed updated drivers. No complaints. WinXP still saw the scanner. Okay I say.

c> Went to my Win2k box and copied the c:\scanjet folder to my WinXP box.
in the C:\SCANJET\PrecisionScanLT there was a hpprsclt.reg file. I ran it. It set various registry entries for the software.

d> I then copied the msv*.* files from the c:\sj655 folder to the C:\SCANJET\PrecisionScanLT folder. My working theory is that the precisionScan software was getting corrupted from some MS visual C dll file. Dunno.

e> I then set the compatability of C:\SCANJET\PrecisionScanLT\hpprsclt.exe to Win98. My next theory was that this old software just didn't play well with WinXP. Can I tell WinXP to run this software in some compatability mode?

f> I doubleclicked on hpprsclt.exe file (The main executable that is called the PrecsionScan LT software).

It worked! It scanned! I'm happy, I'm not touching anything else unless it breaks again and I have to tinker some more. My system is probably scrambled enough to where this crappy HPSJ4200c works.

YMMV

Thanks for the reply. Basically this is a dicontinued scanner, and really HP would rather I bought a new one. They don't cost much but it's still revenue for HP. However I don't do much scannng and for my needs it was working fne. In the end for a few dollars I sent away for the CD from HP with the drivers for the scanner, installed them and they worked fine with XP. So it was a question of a few dollars to buy old drivers or a hundred dollars for a new scanner. As it happens my two HP printers and my scanner are all discontinued BUT they work fine !

Well it's 4 years later Nov 2008 & I just had this problem.
From above I found the fix by going to the hpprsclt.exe right clicking then compatability mode tab & changed it to Win 98/ME.
It works now. Thanks. Hope this helps someone using this Scanner I bought mine in 1999 I think.

Make sure the scanner is OFF when you boot up. Then power it up, then run the software. It doesn't detect it on boot up even though it's listed in Device Manager. BTW I took it off compatibility mode and it worked. Wouldn't work as 98/ME. Go Figure!

I am having exactly the same problem and tried all of above, but HP PrecisionScan LT and Microsoft Scanner & Camera Wizard can't detect the scanner. It appears in Device Manager, and Hardware Wizard says device is working properly. I am using XP Pro on the laptop where I am trying to install scanner, and was using XP Pro on other pc where it was previously installed. Now have new pc with Vista, and as we know, HP don't provide a driver for Vista for this scanner. Does anyone have any other suggestions please?
