Hi Obi. Welcome to the Hardware Analysis forums! Let's get right down to solving your problem, okay? :)

It sounds like what happened is that your DVD-ROM can't find it's necessary drivers. To help you out better could you please let us know what type of drive this is and what your operating system is?

Without the information the best I can recommend would be for you to remove the drive in the device manager and then reboot, letting Windows detect it and reinstall the necessary drivers.

If I reinstall winxp will this cure the problem and do I have to back up my files or can I install over it and find my files still there?

heres your answer....

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/al...c_lgsc.asp

37 Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37) The driver returned failure from its DriverEntry routine. Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall or upgrade the driver.
On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooting wizard.

While the error code may indicate a software problem it seems rather close to the hardware POST error 40 for floppy disks. The fact it affects all drives and the driver reload did not fix perhaps you should look to the hardware more specifically the MOBO and the connections. Perhaps a check of the BIOS would not go astray.

Its fixed. I posted this problem in videohelp.com forum and someone came up with this reg file on the net. Looks like the fault was in the registry. I did not have system restore working due to space problems, but this will teach me. thanks for your help guys, its appreaciated.

See, the same error can come from multiple problems. You got to love Windows. :)

This Code 37 problem plagued me too. Came out of the blue for no reason I could see. Uninstalling and reloading drivers for new hardware, when
"control panel/system/hardware/device manager" showed yellow exclamation marks, did no good.:
Neither did cdgone.zip download .reg merge, or windows XP system restore, even though I took it back to four seperate known good days.

Finally tracked it down to an ATAPI Update; uninstalled it with "Add/Remove Programs"and XP imediately detected my two lost drives and installed the drivers for them right away.

Still don't know where the ATAPI update/installation came from ((Windows automatic updates maybe??))

I'm having this same problem with a floppy drive. I've exhausted my knowledge and cannot figure it out. Any help? Any suggestions?
