In college they had us write programs in several programming languages. I've written code in everything from Assembly to VB and in my opinion the hardest language to learn is the first one. Programming for me is a state of mind and the hard part is figuring out how to perform a task using the limited number of functions available to you, not jotting down the syntax in the IDE.

I was of the impression that the Source Engine was programmed in C++.

I'd have checked before writing but wikipedia seems to be dead.

In order:
Machine language (1s and 0s, sometimes represented as hexidecimal or octal numbers)
Assembly (first level interpretive language that permits the usage of human language derivatives of ML through labling such as LDA for Load Accumulator, and SR for Shift Right)
MASM (Macro Assembly)
COBAL
ADA
The rest of it is inturpretive languages based upon one or more of the above to include LISP and C and it's derivatives.

ANYONE that claims that C or any of it's derivatives are the most difficult just don't know what a COMPUTER IS!
Just my take.

Yes, very. I said that because you bumped a 5 year old thread!

I have mastered Java but that has to be the most pointless language because of the stupid runtime environment. I think C++ is so outdated with its lack of garbage collection and confusing syntax. I want to learn C# because it is a lot like Java but it runs nativley on Windows.

Dang McFly,
I guess my bump of 20-30 year old languages should get even more sarcasm......

You can either be part of the problem or be part of the solution.

Well, not really. You need to install .NET Framework (Common Language Runtime) which is effectively the same as having to install the JVM.

It is but it doesn't force you to install it and a lot of people choose not to. Therefore .NET developers like myself have to include .NET detection code in our .NET application installers.

Edit: and another thing to mention. Trying to run a .NET application without .NET simply causes the application to crash. This even happens when running a 2.0 SP1 built app on a machine without SP1 installed!
