What motherboard do you have and does it have a VIA chipset. It seams the be the biggest problem. It will happen on other motherboards, but often it is one with VIA chipset.

Well, here is another person having the same problem, I just upgraded to an XP2000+ Geforce4 Ti 4200, and a 745 Ultra m/board
I had no problems when I was using win ME, but I decided to install winXP, after doing this I haven't been able to play anything apart from Baldurs Gate 2, which uses openGL, I've tried going back to win98 but and having a load of trouble getting it installed.

Hey

I think I solved my problem. I underclocked my card and the problem is gone. But that is not how it should be. Could anybody have an idea, why it is working now with a lower clockspeed of the card.

I did the samething. I underclocked my ti-4200 and now I can play the games that I could not play. Like the perswon before me it is not right to have to underclock. My graphic are a little slower.
This is still making me think it is a power problem. I think underclocking would made the card not put as much power. Is this right??
I would like to hear feedback

Thanks

ok me ive just changed my amd heatsink fan with a bigger one
and the other ting is i removed the gforce 4 fan and replaced it with a new one that is not plugged onto the agp slop but instead plugged directly to the power supply and the fan is faster and since then my system is alway been stable for like the last 20 hrs and even faster oh and i did remove the goo underneat the heat sink on the gforce4 and replace it with artic silver3 so the gpu on gforce4 is cooler than before and my cpu is cooler too

hihihi it was worth to try but for now it ok and working correctly

I have finally solved my problem. After trying pretty much everything suggested on this forum thread, I have found a solution that works on my set up. When installing the VIA drivers, I did NOT install the CPU to AGP drivers, and hey presto! I have a very stable system.

Admittedly, 3D performance has taken a bit of a hit (my 3D Mark 2001 performance has fallen from 6,200 to 5,050) but at least my system runs now. Anyway, my eye can't detect any jerkiness above about 20 fps, so this loss in performance is not detrimental to my gaming.

I suspect that this crashing problem is mostly experienced by older VIA chipsets found on older motherboards. (Mine is over 18 months old, and has the KT133 A chipset.)

I am very reluctant to even attempt to install these drivers again, as I cannot uninstall them. Therefore, I will wait to upgrade my motherboard and see what happens then.

Hi. After many HRS\DAYS\WKS of trying to solve my winme\via\gf4Ti4400\dx8.1 prob the only thing that worked was installing the via 4in1 4.36a & dets.40.72.beta. Although in the past 4.35 has worked on occations. I was experiencing the occational kick to desktop plus jerky graphics (although no decrease in fps was shown on timedemo.) in UT which I never had with my old Herculesgf2mx32mb. Newer 4in1's did not help what so ever. This problem was experienced on both K7VZA & KT266A. What worked for me was, installing drivers in the following order hope this helps some of you:
1: OS
2:Via 4in1 4.36a
3:S\card
4:DX8.1b
My thoughts are that something the 4in1's are not installing drvs\settings correctly. Like I said the 4.35 has worked on occations using the same order of install.

CURRENT SYSTEM SPEC:

ABIT KT7A
KT133A 266FSB
AMD 750 OVERCLOCKED TO 900
WINXP PRO
GF 200MX 64MB
VIA 4IN1 4.45 (WITH VIA TEST DRIVER)
DX9
256SDRAM
SB LIVE PLATINUM

I've had this problem ever since I've installed WINXP SP1 with the new directx 8.1b.
UT 2003, NOLF2, Need For Speed etc all start but after a few seconds either freeze, crash back to the desktop, blue screen of death is displayed or the computer restarts. For UT 2003 I could modify the ini file to use OpenGL and all worked except in high detail levels when i get same problems as before. For NOLF2 and Need For Speed and most other games they would start and crash after after a few seconds into the game. The problems all seem to be as a result of games using DirectX.
I've re-installed WINXP Pro with SP1, latest via 4in1 4.45, DX9, Creatives latest Detonator driver 41.80, reset bios to optimum, reduced overclock and still get the same crashes in games. Normal PC apps are running fine without any errors.
However, I've just installed the via test driver ( http://downloads.viaarena.com/drivers/others/Test_driver1.zip ) as mentioned and WOW i actually managed to play NOLF2 for the first time in 4 weeks. All my games are running fine.

MANY THANKS TO Leumas X

Has anyone tried any of these video cards with the new nForce or nForce2 motherboards? I wonder if these cards would run trouble free sence the chipsets on both mobo and vid card are nvidia. If this is the case and they run great together without all this bs, I might just buy a new mobo w/ the nforce2 chipset and be done w/ it.

Duron 1200
K7tPro2a - Kt133
384 SDRAM
XP Home

Has anyone else thrown out the Geforce4 card and tried to go back to their old configuration only to get the same errors?

Basically I put my AIW Radeon back-in, reformated the drive, installed XP Home, Radeon Drivers, test VIA 4in1, directx9 and still got BSOD. Replaced the power supply, switched out/reconfigured SDRAM, and Updated Bios - still doesn't work when tryingto play UT2003, Warcraft 3, 3dMArk, but is fine otherwise.

It actually it does something new every once in awhile now - it drops out to an 8bit desktop and says something about an internal device error. Does this mean the Geforce4 card damaged my AGP slot? Both the Radeon and the Geforce work in my Pentium4 system and I have pretty much replaced or switched out every component except for my motherboard.

Compatability problems are one thing, but actually damaging other components is totally unacceptable.

I recently purchased the Asylum Geforce4 TI 4600 and started experiencing almost exactly the issues everybody has been having here. Except - my machine never reboots and never give me an errror message. The screen seems to go into standby mode (blinking amber light) and the speakers emit a tightly cycling tone/waveform. Computer is unresponsive and locked up. Have to reboot. This is also very similiar to the new topic "geforce ti 4200". Just playing NWN and NOLF. Pretty much timed it to nearly 30 minutes and then the computer goes haywire. Tried the latest via 4 in 1 (45). Tried nVidia 41.09, 40.72 and others. Tried the "test driver" for the RX55 issue. took memory out. re-flashed the bios from Abit (KT7a ver 1.0). disabled fast writes, adjusted aperture size. if you guys talked about it, I pretty much tried it - except for agp 1x. Nothing worked.

UNTIL

I turned off APM on the MB and double-checked to make sure the power management was not turned on within Windows XP. This and turning off my Norton AntiVirus autoprotect. Now the machine has been up for 5 hours in NWN and no issues. Runs great!

Specs
Athlon 1400 Thunderbird "C" core.
Abit KT7a (1.0) flashed to A9 compiled on 07/10/2002. (This included a fix for a 'KT7a and GeForce 4 TI 4X00 compatibility issue'.)
Asylum Geforce 4 TI 4600 running 41.09 drivers assigned IRQ 11. Had to do this in the bios. Asylum Tech support site seemed pretty adamant about this. Everything is re-enabled within the bios for the AGP.
Windows XP Home Edition (SP1) and other critical updates.
IBM 30G 7200 HD
Crucial 256 (133 cl2) and Kingston 256 (133 cl3)
Enermax EG465P-VE (431 watts with 38 amps on the 3.3 leg!)
SoundBlaster Live! Platinum
3COM Ethernet Card

CPU voltage is 1.75 and the I/O voltage is 3.38.

oops - was using standard XP DirectX 8.1 - went to 9.0 and still had the same problem until I disabled APM and Norton AV.

I've managed to get mine working.
I went into BIOS and set my FSB to 133, I also changed the ratio of RAM from 1:1 to 4:5 which set the RAM speed at 333 which is what I had bought, and hey presto, my games all work now, I'm not sure how this manages to fix the problem but if anyone is using DDR333 I suggest trying this.

groundhog. You may want to try this. Go and get geforce tweak. It is a proggie that will let you over or underclock your card. I had problems with my computer till I underclocked by 10mhz and now the system is stable. My graphic could be a little faster, but if you can't ply the games at stock speed what is the use. Good Luck

Well I re-enabled the Norton AntiVirus and everything is still running great! It looks like it was the APM settings in the BIOS. I hope everyone finds a solution that will work for them.

This problem is really begging to get frustrating!

My system:

Processor - AMD Athlon XP2200+
Mother Board - Asus A7V8X
Memory - 512MB RAM (266Mhz)
Graphics - Nvidia Geforce 4200Ti 128MB
OS - Windows XP Pro (SP1)
Direct X 8.1

If I run any 3D game it will crash in a matter of minutes... - I can't even get a 3D benchmark before the system freezes.

I did manage a small amount of success with running GTA3. Previously it crashed within 5 minutes but now that i have installed extra fans in the case, taking the temperature down to approx 30 deg.C, It runs fine - although not in the highest graphics setting.

It seems that this may be a power supply issue or a temperature issue (or indeed both the same thing).

I've read here about a Geforce Tweak utillity that can underclock the card, which may help. Does anyone know where this is? - and how to use it to underclock?

Karl
