Thanks Leumas X!

Your fix also seemed to work for me. I too have been searching for a solution for a while now. I noticed the problem after I bought UT2003, a G4 TI4200 and upgraded DirectX. It sucked for me because I had so many different variables to work with. Then when I started upgrading all of my drivers the problem just seemed to get worse. I also flashed my MB BIOS (KT7A) which was a last resort considering all of the problems I had when I first bought it.

I'm not sure how stable the system will be, but I was able to play an entire round of Tiger Woods 2002 without my PC crashing...verses a crash within 5 seconds of game play before.

Take care and thanks for taking the time to post a fix. Hope this works for everyone!!!

I have a VisionTek Geforce4 Ti 4600 128meg agp card. I am running Win2k SP2. I play Everquest and Unreal Tornament and after a few min playing Unreal it freezes my computer with a loud screetching noise comming from the speakers. Everquest use to crash very often till I downgraded the drivers but it still freezes my system every few hours. I tried new drivers and old drivers, none seem to fix the problem completely. I at first had the motherboard drivers installed but then after I formated my computer I didn't install them again so it seems like the motherboard drivers have nothing to do with my prob. This prob is very annoying. I paid $400 for my card when it first come out in stores. I would like to fix this prob asap! Also I have a KR7A-RAID (Abit) motherboard.
Any help would be very nice, Thanx!

I have the same motherboard the ECS k7s5a and have no clue as to what I should do, this problem has followed me from my old system to my new system and I have had no success in determining the source of the problem further than anyone else here. I try to run warcraft 3 and after 10-15 mins at most i crash. Any suggestions would be appreciated

I had the same problem with my PNY Verto GeForce 4 Ti4400. I am running Windows 98SE. I fixed the problem by disabling AGP fast writes in my BIOS. Ever since i did that, my computer hasn't locked up.

Since then, i've upgraded to a GeForce 4 Ti4600, and again, no problem w/ AGP Fast Write disabled, however the problem returns when i enable fast write.

I'm using the 40.72 detenator drivers, and the VIA 4-in-1 test driver.

Hope this helps.

torrance~

I haven't checked this forum in a while but I see some are still having problems.

If the following are components of your system:

Any Motherboard using VIA chipset.
Any Processor released by AMD
Windows XP (maybe other Windows versions)
GeForce card (particularily GF4)

If this is not your system your problem is unrelated ! ! !

If you need to double check if you have the VIA chipset there is 2 things you can do. 1. Check the motherboard manual. 2. Go into your device manager and in the System Devices section if you see anything that says VIA in it you have the VIA chipset.

Do make sure you have all the hardware and even firmware upgrades. Then experiment with drivers for you VIA chipset, obtainable at downloads.viaarena.com.

I did post a test driver from that site back in November and it is in this thread. It was the driver that fix my problem.

Hope that helps... oh by the way I emailed AMD and Microsoft about possible solutions to this problem. Neither replied and it has been 2 months.

Gigabyte 6BXE M/B
Intel 440BX Chipset
Pentium III 450MHz
Win 2K SP2
Tornado GeForce4 440MX
DirectX 8.1

If I don't have a Via chipset, but am having the same problems, have downloaded latest nvidia update 40.72 and various other updates. Please can you help. Games that crash include Age of Mythology and Unreal Tournament 2003

It really is incredible that this big of a problem ever made it to the public. It seems it has become a standard to release software before it works and you require 50 million patch to make it work and I truely hope this isn't going to become a trend in hardware as well.

Hobbes C this won't help your crashing problem but it may be able to get you playing UT2003 again. Try setting it to OpenGL rendering. I have heard that fixes it because this problem seems related to Direct X.

For any one else that is getting the crashing problem still... unfortuanatly I haven't found anything new. I am still looking around though. So if I find anything I will keep you posted. Do check other forums too. Many, many people have this problem and still haven't found a fix for it. No one company will own up to the problem so nothing is really getting done to resolve but, I will still look out for fixes.

My problem isn't the same, but I get the blank screen as soon as I install my new GF4 4600. I'm running a P4 2.0 GHz with intel 850 chipset. No matter what I do, the new video card won't display anything, yet the system boots up just fine.

Any ideas?

Ok, here it goes, after having a problem with my crappy ecs mb, i decided to spend a bit more money on fixing up my computer. From what I can tell through about 10 os installs, and reinstalls, it happens in any os from 98 to xp and happens with any geforce card from originals, which i had, to geforce4 Also i have noticed asus mb's tend to have the problem more, while i know epox and soyo mb's dont tend to have the crashing as much. This is a hit and miss error that seems to be related as much to directx as to what mb you use because i went from an athlon 700 to xp1800+ to xp2100+ in about a 2 week span all on different mb's, and my problem is now fixed. My recomendation if the software patches dont work, try a new mb from a big place like fry's electronics, http://www.outpost.com, and if it doesnt fix it, return it.

I have Win 98, Intel P4 2,4 Ghz and a GeForce 4 Ti 4600 and I have the same problem.
I tried with DirectX 8.2 but it didn't work.
I also want to try with DirectX 9 but it has a timebomb so I don't wanna install it.
Guess I have to cancel all my online game accounts until further notice...sigh.

My system work fine. I managed to install and play all the games I bought. (such as medal of honors, spearhead, need for speed hot pursuit2, james bond nightfire and even no one live forever 2). Below are some of my system specs :

abit kt7a ver1.3
athlon 1800+
384 sd ram (pc133 only)
msi gforce4 440mx
via (4in1 driver 4.28, 4.38, 443 and up to now 445 all work perfectly fine)
windows XP SP1
asus 52X cdrom
asus cd writer 16X (should be unrelated)
test_driver from via (must have!!! or else all the directX 8.1 games would not work)
DirectX 8.2
nvidia 40.72

Hope anyone can use this information as a reference to solve their problem.
