Yep, I tried all of that, still crashed. :(

I have my latest monitor driver installed and updated, doesn't make any difference. My computer is posessed. :)

Scott,
Do you have the DirectX 9 Beta or DirectX 9 final release. Next thing I would try is Rafael Chiriboga resolution and if that works you can go from there. If you have the beta release of DirectX 9 download the full version. I really don't think Rafael Chiriboga resolution will help your problem cause the problem you are have is a refresh rate problem with your monitor but at this point I would try everything you can. If you have another monitor try using it just to see if that is it if not the it is a motherboard or Video Card problem. I would search the net for "geForce Out Of Sync Error" or "geForce Out Of Sync Problem" and do your search in google you get better results. Here is the link that I found the "Out Of Sync" Problem http://pc.ign.com/mail/2002-07-18.html it is the 3rd Artical Down maybe that will put you on the right track. If you find a resolution for the problem let me know and I will keep my eye out for your and report anything I find that may help.

Since i have thrown out my Geforce 4 , i cant really test this solution , but some guy told me this solution.
he said to go to DXDIAG , the more help tab and then click on override , write down 60 in the space and apply it. he says it has worked for him.
TRY IT and TELL ME plz.

I had the same problem that everyone is talking about. I tried the various configs like changing the AGP settings and drivers etc....

When a PC crashes in a Direct X game and goes into an infinite loop, it is a problem with the power that the PC is consuming. My config is

Athlon XP1900+
Gigabyte VTXH+ (VIA)
512Mb DDR
Geforce Ti4200 (64Mb)

I tried all the permutations with drivers and settings and updates and patches etc... nothing worked. Still crashes!

I looked into the power consumption that AMD recommend and found that the AMPS where far too low on my 300W PSU. I have a 250W PSU that delivers more amps for the 3.3v and 5v rails. So check this out on your systems. The recommended by AMD are as follows:

Volts min continous max continous
+3.3 0.3A 28.0A
+5 0.1A 30.0A
+12 0.0A 15.0A

There are more but these are the most important. My 300W PSU came in well below on the amps. Geforce 4 cards are power hungry therefore if you have more than one memory stick and several other PCI cards the power is going to be drained is your AMPS dont meet these requirements.

One soloution to test this out, if you have an old PC which which still runs, run your Hardisks, CD-ROMS, FDD and fans off this PSU and just run the motherboard off the PSU installed in the problem PC. This works a treat. I have been playing up2date direct X games that I have had majors problems with for several hours now if no crashes. Very stable!!!!

So I am using this method until my new PSU turns up. BTW its an Enermax. Plenty of power in them!!!!!

Good Luck People and I hope this helps.

Midhat Rasool,
That is great that may be the answer to the black screen problem in Windows XP. I am glad that you posted that and if I may ask what Video Card are you using now. I went from ATI to nVIDIA and sorry to say nVIDIA is not as good as ATI.

I checked my "Vertical Sync" and "Anti-aliasing" both were already "off". I couldn't find the "mipmap" setting anywhere, where is it located exactly?

Kevin -

I tried those "Sync out of range" links that you kindly provided for me, unfortunately none of them provided me with information of that I don't already know. I'm certain 100% now, that my monitor for whatever reason has decided to "Sync-out" with my new GForce4 video card. I started off with an ATI-Radeon 64m card, it worked fine, but had display problems, so I replaced *that* card with an ATI-Radeon 9000 128m w/TVO. As soon as I installed and used my "Radeon 9k" the Sync error came about. Not knowing, thinking it was the poor ATI driver situation with games, I *again* replaced my Radeon 9k with (currently) my new GF4. So it's definately a "Sync" issue.

Here's the funny part, my monitor is capable of " 1280 x 1024 " I have never ran it that high. The highest I have ever tweaked my res was to "1152x864" but I have been running "1024x768" as far back as I can remember and haven't messed with it since. It's almost as if that when I installed the "128m" cards it threw my Monitor out of Sync somehow.
Now the question is, how to get my monitor to smarten up'

I did as you asked, I tried forcing the refresh rate to "60" which is a valid "rate" with my monitor specs, through DXDIAG, and still my 3D games crashed with the same problem. :(

Here are my current BIOS power readouts.

Vcore +1.728v
Vtt +1.120v
+3.300v +3.200v
+5.000v +4.919v
+12.000v +12.224v
5VSB +4.972v

Are the above settings normal/correct ?

* All of my system temperatures and fan speeds are also "normal" and well below the problem potential.

An update of my problem.

I have tested:
Change refresh rate. (all to 60hz)
Install Via hyperion
Latency patch
Water cooling system (one with chipset, processor and gpu cooling)
Change the Power supply from 350 to 450.
Remove All the PCI Cards (TV tuner, SBLive, Modem, Network)
Downclock the Gforce.
Uninstall the AGP
Run the Graphic Card in PCI mode
ACPM Disabled.

And. DONT WORK!.

I just dont underlock from 133 to 100 (why buy a 2000+ if i only can use as a 1250?)

In a Prentium !!! 866mhz (via chipset by the way). the pc runs very good, but in this Athlon 2000+ crash in all games (recently crash also in the starcraft!).

After 6 visits to the warranty, and 1 change of the motherboard. spend lots of money buying a watercooling system*, fans, and a biger power supply* ( * hard to find in my country). don't get to work this damm thing!.

In a reply for my email, Gigabyte tells me that they don't find any problem.. (sure, as always is the stupid user...).

The representatives of AMD in my country instead of saying that they are looking for a solution of the problem, sent to me a email where they said that AMD processors are the best of the market, and nothing more, as if that went to solve my problem "#$#%&$&$&!!!!!!!!!!.

Jaton (my graphic card manufacturer). hasn't reply any email (5 emails already).

In a few words. if i can't find the solution in a few days, i just sell this crap and buy a Intel Pentium 4. =(. (slower, more expensive ,but at least less compatibility problems).

So... Intel. here I go (again).

Excuse the double message, I want to add that in Red Hat 8, this computer doesnt run, flies!. The bad things are:

1. Doesnt exist so many games for Linux
2. Games for windows (running with WINE and other emulators) crashes also.

3. The driver support for linux is really poor. (red hat sometimes don't recognize the downloaded driver).

Hey man, I know the feeling. I've been having the same problem running my GF4 in AGP mode, crashes constantly. I still haven't been able to figure it out with the gracious help of everyone in here. I've tried just about everything, and still no results. I'm close to throwing my computer off my balcony. :) Just stick with this thread, alot of helpful people in here. Should figure something out.

I just hope the manufacturers (VIA, NVIDIA, AMD, Micro$$oft) open the eyes and see how many buyers are very angry because this problem.

All reply that there's no problem.. (sure, the world is wrong.. they have all the truth).

By the way, VIA reply me that they don't have consumer support (only the via arena) "contact your mother board manufacturer".

So. no answer, i'm just wondering where i can find a Nforce based mother board in my country...

Well I received my Enermax 350W PSU and installed it. Solved my issues straight away. If you are saying "Well mine is a 350W PSU and I still have a problem", check the amps out on the PSU itself and compare it with AMDs recommendation for the Athlon XP. See my previous thread for detail. Even 350W PSUs may not have enough amps for the 3.3v and 5v rail. So double-check.

I have installed DX9 now and the latest Nivida drivers and my 3d Mark 2001 test runs now and the results are better.

Good Luck!

As I mentioned before with my power settings "above" I don't think it's a power issue, this problem only occurs in AGP mode and gives me a "Sync out of range" error, which by all references and information is NOT a power problem.

I'm hoping that at some point, someone will be able to help me solve this problem without throwing the usual "heat, power and driver" spam at me.

I've been through every single test known to the PC user and my retailer/technical aid as well as trying a few things mentioned in this thread and my problem still remains unsolved.

But for the record, my retailer and friend who is certified A+ sold me this system, installed the appropriate PSU (350w) along with the proper cooling (fans), heat sync, etc.

He's looked over this problem before and was unable to solve it, and after 6+ hours of testing he was directly able to say that it wasn't my heat, power or driver(s). Which is why I am here now, and on many other technical-help sites.

What I need now is a miracle. :)
