I've been having the same problem as everyone else here. I installed DirectX 9 a couple of days ago, and things are looking a bit better: Most games seem to work normally now, but some will reboot my machine when I exit them. This is just about bearable for me, although I would like a real fix!

is there anyone here who have tried the Geforce 4 with the Nforce board?
I'm losing my hope to fixing this VIA, GEforce 4, DirectX problem, so I'm planning to just sell my mobo and get myself a non Via board thus eliminating one variable, I'm sure it's not the 3d card because it's been replaced twice by the supplier and still the same problem(or am i extremely in bad luck to receive 2 defective vcards!), so my only target now is the mobo.

I have a G force 4 Ti 4600
AMD 2100xp GA-7DXR+
Windows XP & Directx 8.1
I was having problems with random system crashes to the desk top and reboots only when playing 3d games like BF 1942. I tried installing every new driver and bios upgrade I could find.

Turns out it was a heat problem. The NB_Fan on the 761 chip had stopped running. I replaced the fan and it all works great!!! Not a single crash or lock-up since. Figured I would tell my story because I should have checked this earlier but did not think of it.

Yeah, I'm beginning to think that it's my motherboard that's not compatible with the cards and/or the games that I play. I'm going to look into it.

Is anyone running a Sound blaster sound card and a Vai chipset?

Try to remove all extra pci slot items and leave in ONLY your video card / memory / hd / cpu

and try it that way - even do this, then do a fresh format to make sure all old drivers are gone.

immedialty after format - install game - try, if it doesn't work - get all windows updates and services packs, and lates direct X and try that.

that is what i would do, although time consuming, it is eliminating possible problems.....

It would seem that you haven't been reading this thread. I don't know if your recommendation was for me to do all of that, as I have already done all of that, and it didn't work. So we're well passed those suggestions.

Hi Gang

AMD xp 2400
Asus a7n8x
geforce4 ti 4200
Aopen dvd+rw/+r
80g 7200 rpm
6g(old hd)
floppy
cpu tornado fan
Big ass case fan
Neon light

I'm back and I bring good news. My suspicions about power has proven to be correct. (so far nearly a week and counting)

Please see my post on Feb 5 re: the QUALITY of power supply.
On the 6th of February I installed an Enermax eg465p-ve 430w PSU
According to the specs I probably could have just gone with the 350w and been fine. But I like lot’s of overhead in this category.

Immediately after putting it in I went to check some e-mail using Outlook 2000 and after hitting send it went to a stop screen. S@*T!

I had this old piece of crap fujitsu 6g from my old system and just for giggles I unplugged it. Restarted and here's what has happened over the past week.

Evidently the different speeds of the two ide drives was causing a conflict as well as the power.

Nothing but hour after hour of glorious error free computing and gaming!

Never a crash, freeze, lock up, blue screen, stop screen. Nothing!

I have tried to crash the thing too!

I start WINMX and kazaa and begin large downloads.

I then launch into "Unreal" and play as long as I want.

Same with Quake 3.

All with resources cranked on full throttle in AGP Mode

As you know I and many of you had tried all the bios adjustments, Driver upgrades and downgrades with no results.

It's a power stability and heat issue. Has to be.

Copied below is STAY Slinky's
Post on this board from Feb 10

"Re: GeForce 4 Problem with DirectX.
Well I received my Enermax 350W PSU and installed it. Solved my issues straight away. If you are saying "Well mine is a 350W PSU and I still have a problem", check the amps out on the PSU itself and compare it with AMDs recommendation for the Athlon XP. See my previous thread for detail. Even 350W PSUs may not have enough amps for the 3.3v and 5v rail. So double-check.

I have installed DX9 now and the latest Nivida drivers and my 3d Mark 2001 test runs now and the results are better.

Good Luck!"

DO NOT LOOK AT THE POWER RATING OF YOUR PSU!

Look instead at the Manufacturer and how the voltage rails are divided.

Both AMD XP and P4 cpu's require lot's of high quality stable voltage.

Please go to the AMD web page and pay close attention to how much time they devote to the issue of PSU and Cooling.

Many sentences and paragraphs devoted to the CRITICAL IMPORTANCE of having these two items (POWER & HEAT) addressed correctly or SERIOUS STABILITY ISSUES MAY ARISE.

I don't work for Enermax. I just know that they make the best PSU.

Please post back if you decide to make this upgrade and please share your results.

There is hope my brothers and sisters! You’re only another $50-$100 away from the results you are looking for!

Peace
Derrin

Same problem all you people are having.

I do have a crappy PSU so ill upgrade that first and then see what happens

If that does not work guess ill go buy a ATI Card

kthxbi :D

Well I got a New 400W PSU. Paid £90 for super quiet one. My CPU is 45C. Still crashes.

Exactly, I too am still having problems and I bought a new power supply at the earlier stages of my problem thinking it was the power. Obviously these instances of people replacing their power supply and getting a "fix" was merely the fact that their peticular problem WAS a power or heat issue.

Now clearly any genius can see that there are still people with the "Black Screen/Looping sound" and errors like "Sync out of range" and after thorough testing, it is not, I repeat, is NOT a power or heat problem.

Sorry if I seem a little bit on the 'bitchy' side, but I keep seeing fixes involving Power Supplies, when I know that those are solves for "some" of the problems, not all.

I think it's because my Motherboard is an AGP x4, and my Vid-Card is an AGP x8, would that cause the "Sync" error?

Hi,

My system spec

Asus motherboard KT400 SATA, raid, 6channel sound etc,
xp2000+
512mb ddr cl2
40x cdrw liteon
16x dvd liteon
40gig 7200rpm maxtor HD
Inno3D 128mb Ti4200 128mb ddr GeForce 4
DirectX 8.1
Windows XP Pro + SP1

I have changed graphics settings but makes no differnce.

I'm using verison 41.09 geforce drivers.

Having the same problem as everyone else here, I have noticed this the worst on Unreal 2, it just gets to the part where the 2 men are talking at the start of the game and the screen goes blank, and pc freezes up tottaly.

This also happens in Microsoft Raillisport and Unreal 2003, although not as offen but at random, ususally 5 - 10 mins.

I have tried uninstalling the monitor, set to AGP1x 256mb AGP apetuare, 42.86 dens

Any ideas.......

Hey all,
I have stopped posting because I have no other ideas to offer anyone here but what I have offered. I still have no problems with my system after applying my resolutions to my system. I would just like to offer some friendly advice. I would like to also say that I am A+ certified and after researching nVIDIA graphic cards I have found they will run with any PSU greater than 250 and recommended 300. For those who replaced their PSU with a 400-Watt unit 9 times out of 10 you where experiencing Hardfailure with your old PSU. I suggest before any of you change your PSU run a check on your PSU before buying a new PSU and after completing the test if your PSU is bad by the same size PSU or the recommend size. Anything over PSU 350 is overkill. Please remember just because it is bigger does not mean it is better or it is going to do some magic for your system. Most of here if we see a 300-watt PSU advertised for $19.99 and see another 300-watt PSU for $59.99 we buy then one for $19.99, well guess what 9 times out of 10 that PSU for $19.99 is junk. Your PSU is probably the last thing you want to be cheap with because when your PSU is bad 9 times out of 10 you find out after you replace another device and you right away blame it on that device (HARDFAILURE). I will keep looking for all your resolutions and post when I find something that will not be a repeat resolution in this thread.

As always Kevin, your information and aid is helpful and courteous, thank you.

Btw Kevin, do you play any games and/or participate in any gaming clans? Just curious.

Just ran 3dmark 2001. It went through a number of game demos flawlessly in 2000 and 98. Scored 3950 with mx440. Beats me how this can work but the games don't. Hmmmm. It did skip a test because the 3d technology was not supported for the demo. Maybe the games and so forth need an unsupported technology...? Even though the specs demand a 'minimum' requirement.

Scott,
Yes I am a gamer. I play DF1, DF2, DFLW, DFTFD, DFBHD, Ghost Recon, Rogue Spear, Max Payne, Hit Man 1, Hit Man 2, Doom, Duke Nukem, Quake. So believe me when I could not play any of the Delta Force games I was upset. I have been a faithful ATI user since 1993 and never had the problems that I encounter with nVIDIA therefore if you all have a choice on video cards ATI is better or the same as nVIDIA without the bullcrap. The only reason I am still running with nVIDIA right now is because it gave me headaches until I found my resolution. I wish you all luck and don't give up your resolution is out there just put one of those fingers on each hand up and point them at nVIDIA and keep trying.

The reason I ask Kev, is I run a "Gaming Organization" that hosts gaming clans, we have a website at http://www.syndicate-gaming.com and I encourage you to check us out.

We're always looking for new talented players to join, and if they can manage our application and weekly dedication we've made a nice gaming banner for many people who are still enjoying our organization. Check us out, and email me at the site if your interested.

Cheers,
Scott.

This is just to report that since installing my Enermax PSU, I have not had a single crash. Apart from the Splinter Cell demo. Apprantly this has been delayed due to graphics card issues. Anyway Unreal 2 is my benchmark software now and if that works then I am happy that anything will work. Before installing my PSU I would encounter the blank screen/looping sound issue after about 2 mins of play, sometimes less.

Does anyone know if there is a utility to see how much power is being used by Graphics card.

Keep the faith!!!!

Well it appears my problem is I/O and IRQ conflicts... they told me to fix it with removing some crap from bios so I can manually set my I/O and IRQ configs but I can't in my bios.. and well can anyone tell me how to fix these conflics?
I/O Port 0x000003C0-0x000003DF AMD-751 Processor to AGP Controller
I/O Port 0x000003C0-0x000003DF NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200

this is but an example but there are more conflicts...
