I am having a problem with my gfx card. I can play a game for 5-15min then in just shuts down. I know I am going to get s**t for putting this post and someone will reply with "read through the thread dumbass" but I want to find someone with the exact same specs as my comp and find out exactly what he/she did to resolve this problem.

Here are my specs:

AMD Athlon XP 1800+
MSI KT3 Ultra2 (VIA KT333 Chipset Based)
Nvidia Geforce4 Ti 4200 with AGP 8X - 128mb
OS: Microsoft XP
Maxtor 60 gig
256mb DDR Ram
Direct X 8.0
Power Supply: 465W

Any help will be most appreciated
Thanks

when I frist posted this I had only tried this for a short time Ihave now been running this for many weeks any many 3D games NO!!! more problems this solved them for me 100% try it it could work for you. some were less then supportive of doing this but I repeat it worked 100%

Re: GeForce 4 Problem with DirectX.
I tried everything even a new power supply and video card this was the thing that worked I got it off another board from a max pain my system is an abit kg7 and 1700+ althon with a 4400 geforce card

Re: Screen freezes with XP, AMD, KG7
AMD Athlon XP 1500+, Abit KG7 MoBo, 512MB PC2100, Nvidia GeForce4 Ti4200, WinXP Pro.

Only way I got it to stop hanging (mostly in 3D games), was to increase the voltage in the Bios from 1.75 (default) to 1.80- no more freeze ups.
Make sure you have adequate cooling!

I had done everything else on this page, but this was the only thing to finally work. All other Bios settings are at optimized defaults.

Only drawback (not sure it's related) is now I have some video corruption in UT g.o.t.y. and Star Wars Starfighter (blotchy screen). Everything else runs great- UT 2003 runs like a dream.

I have had the lockup problem for some time. I have spent the last 7 hours going through EVERYTHING trying to fix it, as it is very frustrating to have a sweet machine that amounts to little more than a paperweight. I updated every driver imaginable, played with bios settings, everything i could think of. All to no avail, as im sure you can all relate to. Suddenly, inspiration struck. Heat. AMD's run hotter than hell, ESPECIALLY the Athlons. For normal Windows use, it is manageable. However, once you load up a graphics intensive game, that video card goes into overdrive and pumps even more heat. Now, motherboards have a safety feature. If they reach a certain temperature, they will immediately suspend. This causes the game to "Lock up". Im sure you will notice that when it happens, the HDD LED doesnt blink. With this thought in mind, I stripped off one of the panels of my tower, laid it on the floor, and put a 20" box fan on top of it. Euereka, we have struck gold. I havent had a single lock up or crash since. Now, this may not help all of you, as im certain that there are other factors involved, but after trying everything, including easily a dozen reformats and OS installs (windows 98 first edition, windows 98 second ediiton, and finally Windows XP Professional), the problem is gone. So guys, give it a try, heat may just be that one factor that slipped your mind. Good luck to you all. Now, back to gaming :)

Hi all,
Just like all the people here I had the same problem when upgrading to geforce 4 ti 4200.
the monitor shut down after 5 - 10 minutes of playing forcing restart.

The ONLY thing that seems that has worked for me, after trying all the solutions posted here is to reduce the AGP bus to 2x even though my MOBO supports 4x.
the 3dmark score only reduced by something like 100 points, so id that has to be the solution to this problem then let it be.

Thanks to the people here who offered this solution and happy gaming all!

WELL i would just like to say

That my windows XP (home) and GEFORCE TI 4200 (leadtek 128MB) work together in absolute and complete HARMONY. I dont seem to have a SINGLE problem. In fact, i would say that it works so well, that it can give me scores of around 10000 in 3D MARKS 2001SE (trial version)

If you have a problem - go blame your computer supplier
THEY are meant to work well.

Also, make sure your Windows XP is running on the file system - NTFS.
You check it by going into disk defrag. Look under File System.
If it is written FATsomething....Change it
(this is an unstable system thingie of windows XP)
I forgot how to change it - but by browsing around the internet you should find out.

Hope my help is useful :)

Just remember - They should work well.

PEOPLE ITS THE GRAPHICS CARD AT FAULTY, GET IT REPLACED/FIXED ASAP FROM SUPPLIER OR MANUFACTURE.

My inno3d Ti4200 128mb ddr 4x agp was crashing every few minutes.

UNTIL

Install dens 43.00, reduced the clock speed 50mhz for memory/core and wot u know no crashes. (card is faulty, this is worldwide !!) I'm in the UK.

Got a temporay inno3d 64mb mx 440 in the time being, works perfect not under or overclocked, plays all games (a lot slower of course but doesn't crash)

So get it fixed !!... back to splinter cell now :p

I just took a look at first posts
I couldnt play Mafia and some other games with hard video settings
I uninstalled my VIA PDF drivers
and tested the "Test_driver1.zip" from Leumas X on Nov 12, 2002, 01:55 PM
http://downloads.viaarena.com/drivers/others/Test_driver1.zip
It's ok for me now

my config:
AMD Duron 950
Abit KT7A 1.3 (chipset VIA)
Windows XP
512Mo SDRAM
Direct X 9

I hope this helps

I'm looking for the newest version of those test drivers

The Geforce 4 MX 440 has a "Transparent function"
But if a DirectX application is running in the background it is temporarily disabled.
The only way to fix is to manually go into task manager and kill the process tree (qttask.exe).
I have the latest drivers from http://downloads.viaarena.com/drivers/others/Test_driver1.zip
Does anyone out there have a quick fix solution, or will I just have to learn to deal with it?

XP
512 DDR
AMD Athlon 2000

The same goes with me. I have a Pentium 4 2aGHz processor,Inno3d Geforce 4 ti 4200 running on Windows XP Pro and guess what I've upgraded my Direct X 8.1 to Direct X 9 and still everytime I run the Wolfman demo and play Splinter Cell, my monitor goes blank and the system crashes. I tried all the fixes but nothing worked. Could Microsoft or NVIDIA provide us a fix?

Well I've been struggling with this problem the last 2 days and think I finally found 'my solution'. I think there are many different solutions out there for everyone.

I have:

AthlonXP 1600
AK35 GTR2 ???
256 Cosair 2100 DDR
27 Gig WD 7200 HD
PNY 4200 Ti 64 meg 8x AGP

I've formatted multiple times, tried XP SP1 & Win2k SP3. Various versions of the VIA 4 n 1s, various versions of the GeForce Drivers, all kinds of beta drivers, The AMD AGP thing, the MS AGP thing, everything that's been posted, I've tried, with the execption of the PS, I'm using a 300 Watt PS.

Finally I checked the IRQ assignments and saw that USB/4200 Ti/Intel network card sharing IRQ 7. IRQ 2, 3, 10, 11 & 12 are open? I simply popped out the network card, and wahhhhlllla, it works like a charm. I hope this helps someone.

I have spent the last 2 weeks working through this same problem. As of today, I have spent the last 2 nights gaming away un-inhibited by blue screens of death.

Althought this may be a re-hash of other posts. I thought I would share my specs and exactly what I did, in the order I did it, to finally bring stability to my system. At each step I tested the system playing both UT2003 and DAOC which would both crash within 10 minutes.

Duron 1.3
Epox mobo with KT133A chipset
Inno3D Tornado GeForce4 4200 TI
Win XP Pro
Using on-board sound
512 Meg of PC133 ram
Dlink Wireless NIC

1. I upgraded the case and power supply. My old one was 300 watts, this new one is 400 watts.
2. Installed Detonator 43.00 drivers
3. Installed Hyperion v1.46
4. Set bios to AGP 4x (was on 2x when I looked)
5. Ran Direct X Diag to see if there were any problems. No problems detected.
6. Installed Direct X 9.

BOOM games finally didn't crash. Last night alone my son and I played DAOC for just over 4 hours before going to bed.

I am sooooo happy once again. I believe every idea I used I read on this thread. Thanks to everyone!

Hi,
I have had the same problem for the last couple of weeks, and it finally all worked fine today. My problems were compounded by the fact that I'm using a GA-7VAXP (Rev. 1.2) and Gainward Ti4200 64MB - both of which are known to cause problems. I just got a replacement for my Gainward card today; although this one does not have TV-Out or DVI.

This is what I did today:
1. Reformated by Windows partition to FAT32. It should not matter if you use either FAT or NTFS, but I prefer FAT because Linux supports it out of the box.
2. WinXP SP1 automatically installed the driver for Ti4200. I uninstalled that, and installed the drivers on the Gainward website.
3. Then I installed the VIA hyperion drivers.
4. Updated DirectX to the latest version ... I think it is 9.0.
5. Installed NBA Live 2003 ... and it worked fine!

Hardware Specs:
AMD XP 2000+ @1667MHz (133MHz)
768MB XtremeDDR PC3000 366MHz DDR-RAM
Yamaha Soundcard (PCI)
WD800JB 80GB w/ 8MB cache
400W power supply

I tried installing new drivers before uninstalling the existing drivers, and that screwed up the drivers, and games would not even start. So I highly recommend that before you install new drivers, you uninstall the existing ones, reboot, and then install the new drivers. Hope this helps.

hey dude i dont think it is a problem with directx cause then EVERYONE WOULD HAVE THAT PROBLEM. cause EVERYONE has directx. i have a ti4600 and i have had nothing but VIA chipsets and now i have the NFORCE2 and i run without a hitch. make sure your bios settings are ALL correct.... video bios....etc. also check with si soft sandra and see if side band addressing is on. if it is....download a tweak program to turn it off...some bioses allow you to turn it off others dont. BUT GEFORCE CARDS DO NOT LIKE SIDE BAND ADDRESSING. some even dont like fast writes. check this stuff and let me know...shoot me an email.
