Here is my System specs:

Win2k SP3, and Directx 9
P2.4
GForceMX 440 128 DDR
SiS chipset
300 watt PSU
and a crappy old monitor...

I have noticed that most of the forum mentions the Athlon and so on.
Thing is, I dont have an Ahtlon...
My problem is also that my pc randomly reboots when I play a game such as Operation flaspoint or UT2003 . It happens to reboot in a matter of minutes when playing the game.

I thought it could be the hardware (GForce) or the DirectX drivers or maybe even the graphics car drivers.

IF ANYONE KNOWS OF A SOLUTION, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!

f**k YOU NVIDIA, SIS & VIA, & Microsoft.

I have read every post on this forum and many more, based on what I am seeing and my own tests Both NVIDIA and maybe sis/via are to blame. Probably just NVIDIA considering radeon cards do not have this problem on the sis/via boards.

I have a K7SEM mobo with the sis730s chipset AMD Athlon 1.3Ghz
and have the same problem. The reason people are logically saying AMD is involved is becase Intel Does not make AMD compatable mobos. SIS and VIA on the other hand do...

used to have a geforce2 7700 pure or some s**t and that caused it to freeze with dx7 and then bought a radeon 7000 worked fine for 5+ months. Maybe my comp froze once in that 5 months but the card wasnt powerful enough to play new games. Got a good deal on a Nvidia Geforce 4 MX 440 and what do I get.. the same god damn c**ksucking problem. It has to be NVIDIA and SIS/VIA that are to blame. So now I am either thinking get intel mobo and intel p4 or get radeon 9700 pro.. Probably just the radeon 9700 b/c i dont really need a faster processor yet..

Okay i was deluding myself. My system is past having the graphics artifacts but now i keep getting booted out of the game. SYstme stays alive but i just get booted.
Interesting piece of data: Battlecomm would work with the setup i had. I reloaded DirectX 8.1, got battlecom working. Now the sytme decided to work with 8.1 go figure. But i still get booted. Im ready to go buy a P4 adn and a new mobo and just give this thing to mom sice she dont game.

I have the same problem, I guess I put my specs to see if there are answers
I play Madden 2003

MoBo: Asus p3v4x, PIII, 667MHz
RAM: 512 one stick
WinXP home, directX 9

when I had an ATI rage fury 128 video card 32ram
>>no problem

I upgraded to the gForce4, 64ram, MX440 w/TV out
>>system freezes I have to restart.

I went around that problem by loading Win98 not WinXP, installed Madden plus the Detonator software provided by nVidia
It works just fine, slow at times but not during play. It even plays MP3s

I don't want to do that, I want to play DirectX programs in XP with the nVidia card, I paid for it, didn't I?

lets see if I check this later, if anyone has a solution and feel OK with emailing me the address, pleas email to maestro_dm@hotmail.com
thanx

OMG! OMFG!!!

I successfully completed 3Dmark2001 for the first time in nearly half a year!

Ok...this is what I did...

...

I'm been messing around with this thing so *#&(@*$ much that I'm not really even sure -what- I did anymore.

But here's my current system settings...if it helps:

AMD TBird 1.2 GHz
ABit KT7A-R - Bios updated to A9 Revision
256MB Kingston PC133
SBLive! 5.1 Gamer
Asylum Geforce 4 Ti4600 AGP
80 GB Seagate HDD
2 Ethernet controllers (Linksys & generic)
300W POS Generic power supply

WinXP Pro - all critical updates
Hyperion 4.46
NVidia Detonator Drivers 43.51
Test_Driver1
PCI Latency Fix 0.19f
All power settings turned off (Display->Screensaver->Power)

BIOS Settings:
APM - disabled
AGP 4x - disabled
Fast Write - disabled
All other settings on Fail-safe

This is almost the exactly the same settings as Ground_hog posted above. I'll post again, if my system still crashes. Good luck to everyone out there. And for those that are still experiencing this problem, although the thread is long, I really do recommend reading all of it!

Thanks to everyone who has been contributing!

Well, I've been reading this thread for days. I've been 11+ hours a day working to fix my computer for the last week. None of the fixes mentioned here work for me.

Chaintech Geforce 4 Ti4800 SE 128meg AGP
AMD Duron 850mhz
Amptron motherboard
American Megatrends BIOS
NO VIA chipset
Win98se

Couldn't do the via chipset fix because don't have via chipset.
Updating BIOS did nothing.
Have tried old and new Nvidia drivers, no difference.
Uninstalled and Reinstalled all drivers, etc. many times now.
Have tried everything and am now giving up and going back to onboard crap video from my motherboard that at least worked.

Problem, I run games, like EverQuest. Soon as I get past all the log in screens and stuff I get my character logged in and 1-30 seconds later entire computer freezes and have to hit reset button.

VERY upset that I wasted money on new graphics card. Any suggestions that actually work are more than welcome

Thanks,

Hey Kids

2x256 400 ddr Original Samsung Ram
400W Enermax PSU
XP Pro
AMD xp 2400
Asus a7n8x
geforce4 ti 4200
Aopen dvd+rw/+r
80g 7200 rpm
6g(old hd)
floppy
cpu tornado fan
Big ass case fan
Neon light

I will not speak for everyone, However, I used to have a single off brand generic
512 ddr stick of ram and had all the problems mentioned above.
I got sick of screwing around with this problem myself and took it to my local Authorized AMD repair shop. I explained the crashing, rebooting etc. The very first thing he asked me was what type of ram I was using. That's before he plugged it in, before he popped the case. When I told him. He said it's a ram problem. He the proceeded to pop the case and yank the 512 stick. Confirmed that the maker of the ram was not on the AMD list of approved ram and then put two sticks of good brand name ram from the AMD approved list of ram (2x256 400 ddr Original Samsung Ram)

Since February this has been the most stable machine I have ever owned. I have none of the gaming trouble I had before. UT, Quake, Mafia, all smooth with no crashes He said the newest MOBOs and GPUs are very power PSU and Ram sensitive.

He said the 512 sticks just don't seem to work right with these latest mobos and graphic cards unless run in pairs and ony then if they are from the approved list. The brand name ram fix has solved this problem in most of the cases like ours he has seen and that's all this guy does is work on AMD in a very busy shop.

Why not go to AMD and check the list of approved ram and see how yours mesures up. http://www.amd.com You'll have to pop the case and pop your ram to look whats printed on it if you don't know. The actual maker is what's important here not the size or speed. Evidently there is a lot of bad, cheap, s**tty, gray market ram out there so you have to get it from a reliable source. I really learned a leson on ram from this guy.

I know this thread is RE the GEforce 4400, however, since I have the same card which now works beautifuly due to the ram fix I thought other might bennefit. I 'm not sure if this will benefit intel users or not but it couldn't hurt

Please take time to come back and post if this solves your problem.

Peace
Derrin

If it work for you, fine but,

I have an ASUS MoBo with a
PIII 667mHz and
512ram stick

All that you say is fine but (again)
Why does it work fine when I start the computer in Win98 instead of WinXP?
If it was a Hardware problem, it would've shown in any OS, don't you think?

The latest now is that I disable the fast write feature on my Bios, the game plays but no sound.
Thanks God WinXP comes with a restore feature because after logging in the sound card just went out.
I went to the BIOS and enabled fast write again and restore the system to the prior day.

I am still playing the game in Win98 mode until I find a solution for the WinXP bug.

jrs

Finally got mine to work, everyone, here is the solution to all of your problems, first, smash your Nvidia Graphics card with a hammer, next, go to circuit city and buy the Radeon 9000 pro with 64 MB of DDR. Put it In, Play Games, thats it........ It works good........ Screw NVidia

Never install service packs.. XP is bad enough on its own.

Albatron make bloody good Ti4200 vid cards, check them out, the medusa turbo pro 128MB has been very good in every mobo i put it in. no need to go to 8X AGP even though my new mobo supports it. seems the most common problem card is the MSI version, i find that strange as they usually make very decent stuff.

YEEAHHHAHAHH.
i believe i found the answer. at least for me it works. i've tried everything on this thread. i also tried other s**t. my monitor would either shut down, or the computer would freeze. usually after a few minutes or seconds in a game. it turns out its not directx problem at all, i'm running directx 9. my card is geforce4 mx440 128 mb. the SOLUTION:
get riva tuner.
go to agp settings, put into X1. and check the box so it will start like that in windows. now i can play empire earth, indefinitely. the problem is obvious now, its too f**king slow. can anybody figure out how to make it work with at least 2X agp. thx alot.

Hi,
I had the same problem (computer hangs with a sound and no other solution than reboot)

But now it seems resolved, at least by now.

Follows that i did (I can’t tell what’s imprescindible and what not):

- Install of the via patch (http://downloads.viaarena.com/drivers/others/Test_driver1.zip)
- Then, computer didn’t blocks and indicated error in mssfast.m3d. I found it’s a file related with sound and someone recomended to reduce the sound config in dxdiag ( in “sound”, “hardware acceleration” from total to 1 step below). I intent to down to “No Acceleration” and things start to go fine.
- Then I reintalled the drivers of my Sound Blaste Live! And by the moment all is right.

I hope this helps somebody

WinXP Pro SP1
768 pc2700 ram
QDI Kudoz 7 v 1.0 Board
Athlon XP 2100+
AOpen GForce 4 mx440

============================================

Saludos,

>> I finally found a SOLUTION!!
Everytime I would load 3dmark2001 it would crash within 5 seconds of the test. It would be the same for most games. Sometimes I could play for 5 min and sometimes 5 seconds.

Here are my specs:

Athlon XP 1800+
MSI K7N2-L Motherboard
Albatron Geforce 4 Ti4280P 128mb AGP 8x
256 DDR Samsung
465 Watt Power Supply
60 Gig HD etc..
Win XP
Direct X: 9.0a
Latest Nvidia Drivers

SOLUTION:
1) Download RIVA Tuner @ http://www.guru3d.com
2) Go to Main ----> Driver Settings -----> Customize -----> Customize System Settings ------> Overclocking
3) lower your core clock settings by intervals of 10 until your 3dmark 2001 or games stop crashing.

This solution worked for me after endless wrestling with this stupid problem. My Core clock was @ 249 Mhz and I lowered it to 211.5 Mhz and for the first time in 4 months I finished the 3dmark2001 Benchmark.
I hope this works for everyone. Now for some gaming....!!!

Sorry about the blank post.

I have been having the above problems....and more...for @ a year now. None of the above (including RAM changes) have worked. I haven't changed the power supply, but I might try that. IF that doesn't work, I'm sure a brick will. Recently I've come across a different problem, though...
My computer "hangs" in that the monitor goes black, but the CPU is still running. When I reboot, the color sets itself to Lowest (4-bit) and the Nvidia driver won't be recognized. I have to uninstall/reinstall the driver. Here's my info:
Motherboard:
MicroStar MS-6330
VIA KT133
American Megatrends BIOS
NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4600
Microsoft XP Pro SP 1
AMD Athlon 1.0 GHz
1.5 GB RAM
Direct X 9.0a
