just checked, im using a 250watt power supply with loads of things attached, and a geforce4 mx 440se(128mb), and my pc runs cool and stable(ish), but i did use older nvidia drivers as i couldnt find the nview/clone tab on the latest(to run monitor and tv at same time). but last time i had problems like last post it turned out to be the hard drive, which was slowly dying, check to see if any bad sectors are appearing

Forgot to add that my DirectX drivers are I think v8.0 or v8.1.
Have no need to go to v9.0a
Maybe later on down the road when they fix all the bugs with it.

HI Everyone.

I have found a solution that works for me. But first, here is what I had to go through...

MY SYSTEM SPECS
Pentium 4 2.4 GHz
GeForce4 MX 440 128DDR with NVIDA drivers and manufactured by INNO3D
512DDR memory
40gig HD
Motherboard with SiS 648 chipset
300 watt case
Any monitor

PROBLEMS

1) The pc either restarts or kicks out of the game when playing Unreal Tournament 2003 or Operation Flashpoint or even the 3D maze screen saver.
A certain error also appears sometimes when booting up after restart. (No 5 under "ERRORS)

2) During the booting up process, it could also give the one of the error messages show below. No 1 (Under “ERRORS”) on the list does appear very frequently. When getting that error, we found that if we leave the pc off for a few minutes, it will boot up normally again without repairing Win2k.

3) The System also sometime freezes when doing nothing, but especially on
Start-up it could happen (rarely).

UNSUCCESSFUL SOLUTIONS

1) Installed DirectX 8 through to 9.0a.
2) Changed monitor, and tested different resolutions
3) Installed/Re-Installed Win2k (with service packs 1-3) , WinXP (without service packs)
4) Different Hard Drives.
5) Installing latest drivers (Version 43.45) from NVIDIA for the Graphics card and also tested older drivers such as V40.41.)
6) Installed latest SiS AGP drivers.
7) Disabled/Enabled certain settings in BOIS which was recommended on a Forum.
8) Virus scan with NOD32 showed no viruses.
9) Tested GeForce on other motherboard (VIA chipset and 250w power
Supply, 512 DDR ram, Athlon 1800+) and it worked fine.
10) Disconnected all other IDE devices except main hard drive.

ERRORS

1) Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt!
“C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\ntoskrnl.exe”

2) Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt!
“C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\Drivers\Ntfs.sys”

3) Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
“C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\Config\System ced”

4) Error loading nview.dll
“A Dynamic link library (DLL) initialization routine failed”

5) ***STOP : 0x000000D1 (0x00000004, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0xBEBEB20C)

Beginning dump of physical memory.

NOW THE SOLUTION.

It turned out that the case was not well ventilated. When we leave the case open, the computer never restarted, but when closed, it would re-start after a while and then sooner everytime. Because of the heat build
up in the case, the graphics card overheat and cut-out.
The graphics card got very very hot after a while, so whe needed to get
and extra fan or two for the case. I now keeps the card cool and the
computer works fine. This might just be my problem, but maybe it works for anyone else. It could also be that there is fault with the card, but for now it works with the fan's keeping it cool. Jippeeeee!

I had and still have the same problem. But now I know what’s the prob, the fan. Ya, if you live your PC’s case open, it won’t freeze… add a fan inside. Even if you just live your pc’s case open, it will not freeze.I just need to put a new fan. Aleluya…..

I don't have a geforce 4. I have an old geforce ddr but i had a similar problem as many of you had.
I have a
an Asus a7v133 (KT133A) mobo with
Athlon XP 2000+ and an
Asus V6800 Deluxe (Geforce DDR).
The problem was that I couldn't play any game form more that five minutes -- system froze/locked up and required a hard reboot. Turnced out to be the Monster Sound MX300 sound card that caused the problem -- when it is removed, the game (MOHAA) can run for hours without freezing. Note: there was no IRQ conflict-- it was in a PCI slot that does not rahre interrupts with anything else, different drivers were used -- manufactureres and Vortex. Card worked OK for years on my old abit bx6 rev2 board with no problem. So it was probably the combination of it with te chipset.
Hope it can help anyone.

I agree with you about the hardware combination problem.

I'll have to add that It only happens in WinXP. When I start the system in W98 mode, everything works perfect. There I play all the games. In WinXP I can't even listen to music. Well, I can listen to it if I haven't use any other program before and do not run anything during playback. As soon as I open anything, Internet Explorer for instance, the sound stops. Yes, WinXP-nVidia-Aureal have some problems to solve before you put them together, DON'T BUY THIS COMBINATION!

Yes Jaime, my symptoms were exactly the same as the ones u described, except for the WinXP part. I am using Win Miloonium with Linux Mandrake 9.1 (lamer's best choice :), so the symptoms showed up on BOTH. I concluded that it's just a plain hardware problem.

So whatever OS u use DON'T BUY THIS COMBINATION :)

Try disabling AGP Fast Write in your BIOS. This seems to take care of a lot of issues, particularly with AMD based boards.

SUCCESS!!!!!

For the first time since I've owned this combination of hardware, I have successfully run through all of the DirectX 9.0a tests as well as all of the 3D Mark 2001 tests at full processor/memory bus speeds (133/133). I know there are a lot of solutions to this problem, but for me I think it boiled down to a driver issue. I ripped my hair out trying different BIOS settings and combinations of drivers, but this has finally fixed it...

First, for owners of the ECS K7S5A motherboard, there is a new version of the SiS 735 AGP chipset driver. Go to http://download.sis.com and download version 1.16a of the driver for your operating system. Then go to http://www.nvidia.com and download the latest Detonator drivers (44.03) if you don't already have them. I installed the SiS driver, then the Nvidia driver. After installing them both, I ran dxdiag and found that a file was missing (this was not the cause of the original problem, I am 100% sure), so I reinstalled DX9.0a. After successfully running thru all the tests at 100/100, I went into my BIOS and jacked it up to 133/133 and that was it!!

I have yet to try a game since doing all this, but I will report back in with my results after I do. I am pretty confident everything is working though because I would freeze hard on the dxdiag DirectDraw tests every time before and now they run like a charm. Even better, boosting from 100/100 to 133/133 has increased my 3D Mark 2001 score by over 2000 points!!! At last, my system is running like it was built to run.....

Finaly!!!

After months with this problem and reading so many threads and ways to look for a solution... After reformating my machine twice i checked one more time this thread to find out a couple of "solutions" that i didnt tried...

The guys that recommend to use the Riva Tuner to lower the "Core Clock" by intervals of 10 was the guy that helped me out of this nightmare. Thanks!

I can know even play Rise of Nations that is having problems with so many people...

My System:

P4 2.4GHz
512 DDR
GeForce 4 Ti 4200
Monitor LG F900B
MOBO Asus P4S533

My current configuration is:

Detonator 40.72 WHQL
DirectX 8.1 (The one that comes with the XP retail version)
Windows XP "clean" (I mean, no service pack, no updates)

I think that now i can try to install the updates and DirectX 9.0 safely but as long as my system is working as expected i rather prefer to leave it this way.

So far i just tried RON as i said and AOM, tomorrow i will try Mafia.

The downside is that i payed for a P4 2.4Ghz just to use it as a P4 2.0Ghz.

Anyway thanks to all the people posting in this forum for the help!

I have downloaded the Riva Tuner , But i do not know how to use it , i followed the intructions , going to Main --> Driver Settings ---> Customize ---> Customize System settings ... BUT !!!

I do not know how to set the core speed .. (lower your core clock settings by intervals of 10 until your 3dmark 2001 or games stop crashing)

What do you mean by intervals of 10 ? just minus 10 or wad ?

Jovi,
Don't know if this will work, but it's from a reputable site. Never heard that you ran roll back DirectX. If your willing try let us know if it works.

I have an Intel MB, a P4 1,8Ghz, 512Mb RAM and a Inno3d GeForce 4 Ti4200 card. I have had the same problems and when I discussed it with the card manufacturer, the first thing that helped tremendously was replacing my power supply with something over 350W. Since I've got 2 HD and 2 CDR/DVD drives, my previous power supply of 300W was insufficient. My new 475W power helped a lot. Now I can play most games (incl BF 1942) at the highest detail and 1024x768 settings.

But, I had another problem which caused failures once in a while... The fan on my GeForce card had failed. Overheating would cause the card to shut down. I'm getting a new fan or the card checked out but in the interim, I've opened up my computer, turned on the air conditioner and directed a tabletop fan at the card. So far, things seem to be working fine!

Hope this helps.

Forgot to mention that before my new 475W power supply, I was unable to run through 3d Mark tests... Not so with more power!
