I have been using a GeForce 4 Ti4600 with both an MSI KT3 Ultra and an Asus A7V333 with no problems at all!

Specs: 1. MSI KT3 Ultra ARU and 2. Asus A7V333 both using VIA chipsets running WinXP Professional and Direct X 8.1 (4.08.01.0810)

Athlon XP2100+ 512 mb PC 2700 (333ddr)
CMedia onboard sound
SCSI adapter (old siig fast scsi for hp 4C scsi scanner)
Linksys LAN (for DSL)
Wacom Tablet (serial)
Yamaha CDRW
Liteon DVD player
Logitech Dual Optical USB mouse

I'm using the latest chipset drivers and the latest device drivers - I have had no problems with either of these configurations.

I have had major problems with Soyo motherboards (with VIA chipsets). and ATI graphic cards. However, currently I have an older All In Wonder Rage 128 AGP 2x on the newer Dragon Lite (KT333) (Xp2100+, 512mb PC2100) with no problem (running WinXP Home) and Direct X 8.1)

It is very possible that the mb will help fix the problem. I have the soyo kt-333 dragon lite mb, and have no crashes. I think certain mb's have better via chipset drivers on them to begin with, and that is why some dont need driver updates to work properly.

Alright process of elimination I started out fresh fresh install of xp on a formatted drive reinstalled all the updated drivers for the sytem including 41.09 than played the new hitman demo in 2xagp until it crashed than uninstalled and reinstalled detonator drivers all the way down to 29.42 and the game ran smooth. For those who havent tried this gamedemo the graphics look sweet running 41.09 at least until the game crashes "strange"

by the way I dont know about the rest of you but im ditching the idea of playing with nvidias newest FX card. I guess ATI is going to be the more sensible investment.

thanks for all the tips, guys....
im forwarding some of my own endeavours of these damn GeForce 4 problems, since i saw that people with ECS boards have problems too.

My specs:
- ECS K7S5A (SiS 735 chipset)
- Chaintech geforce 4 MX 440 SE 64mb (code: A-G445)
- Win XP Pro (SP1 installed)

The problem started when i upgraded from my old geforce 2 MX to the new geforce 4.
I tried running GTA3 but after a couple of minutes it just hang. no solution but the reset button. tried UT2003 too, same thing happens.

tried it some more times but same thing still. so i took the following actions:
- upgraded bios from ecs (still problem...)
- directx 8.1b (still problem...)
- nvidia drivers (tried 28.32, 29.42, 40.72, 41.09 -- still problem)
- installed new agp drivers from ECS and SiS web sites (still stuck...)
- installed AMD AGP miniport drivers (no luck...)
- tried several ideas from A LOT of forums (like tuning with rivatuner, changed agp aperture, tried all agp speeds 1x 2x 4x, didnt try changing fast writes and sideband addressing because they're not supported by the geforce,so says rivatuner and powerstrip -- and it still hangs)

so it seems, it must be totally hardware problem.
i have written to ECS, ChainTech and AMD. If, hopefully, i get a response back, i'll let know.

If anyone has to suggest something please let me know, this problem is p**sing me off, and since i cant afford to change mobo or change card, i have to solve this one.

-- cheers

Well this just isnt good. I just installed this gf4 ti-4600. Same problem as others have posted. Game just freezes. Sad thing is i just pulled a radeon 9700 out because i thought it was that card and lack of quality drivers from ATI. It too was doing the same thing ... freeze and hang in games (UT2K3, MOHAAS and even Quake2)
After reading http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/3153/ i dumped that card and got the gf4. Is it possible this is a power supply issue?

hers my system info
2.8ghz P4
80 gig HD
512 DDR ram
GF4 Ti-4600
dvd
cdrw
Windows XP pro
DirectX 8.1
Creative lab soundblaster Xgamer

I have the Geoforce 4 MX420 PCI version and I also suffer from these problems.

But its not just within games.
I had to reisntall XP(problem also exists with otehr OSES 98,ME,2000)

So far I think I am the only PCI Geoforce 4 user in this room.
(Wish I had a AGP slot.)

>> Re: GeForce 4 Problem with DirectX.
wow, i fixed it!!! but in the weirdest way.

i did some introspection and decided to take off one of the SDRAM DIMM's.
And amazingly it worked.
I tried all the games that previously got stuck and they worked flawlessly.

So it seems that the ECS K7S5A (and other ECS motherboards probably),
has a little glitch when it comes to two SDRAM DIMM's from different manufacturers.
I don't know about DDRAM, but from what i see from forums it doesnt have a
problem.
So this problem decided to appear specifically when i installed my new geforce 4.
Anyhow, it seems to work now.

A word of advice to all of you that are experiencing similar problems with geforce4 and
ECS or other motherboards:

- Do a step-by-step procedure and write down some info of what you do each time

- Learning from my mistake, it would probably be a good idea to start from hardware

- Try taking hardware out step-by-step, dont take them all out at once. And each time
check to see if it worked (btw. some graphic cards are really hungry for power
consumption, make sure your psu is ok and enough watt)

- I dont think that re-installing an OS or downgrading to another one is the best idea,
try to figure out what happened with your OS and pc using logic steps. Appart from
the waste of time, it's a waste if you have a lot of programs installed (well, you could
clone them and stuff but still...)

- Getting the latest drivers and bios flashes for the mobo should be the best way for all
to go. Unfortunately it doesnt work for everyone, so make sure you download a wide
series of nvidia drivers, mobo drivers etc....

- And again, start from checking the hardware -- is the card ok?, agp slot ok?, any irq
conflicts? etc...

For those of you with ECS K7S5A, check these links:

http://www.aceshardware.com/forum?read=80043826 (it refers to the memory problems in the replies)

http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/279/

Whatever, i hope that it was helpful to at least some people!!!!!
PC's still are amazing in how much time they can make you spend
on them trying to fix sometihng idiotically meaningless!!!!

I have a similar problem to most in here i am running windows 98se Geforce 4 mx 440 just got rid of windows ME as it was crashing all of the time.
Everytime i go to play a game it might let me play for about 5 minutes then just kick me completely out of the game. it started off with getting an error message ddhelp.exe caused an error in unknown ........whatever that bloody means. My online gaming is non existent at the moment :(
I believe ive read somewhere that if you get rid of directx 8.1 and go back to an older version that might help. Ive yet to find myself a copy of directx 7.0 so i wouldnt know LOL. If anyone knows where i can download this please let me know plzzzzz

A friend of mine had a simmilar problem with gaming and his Geforce. What he had to do was disable ACPI (in the bios) and reinstall XP. With the ACPI turned on it would let the video card use the same irq as the network card (or something like that) and his machine would crash when he was gaming. It might be something to look into.

By the way my GeForce 2 Ti works fine and dandy with the k7s5a and XP.

I just installed NVidia 41.09 and DirectX 9, and it doesn't seem to help. I'm in the same boat as everyone else. Built a new system two days ago, and can't get it to work. Curriously, I also gets reboots from IE6 as well? Anyone else seen that?

I have exactly the same problem. I am running a machine with the following specs:

Gigabyte GA-7ZXR motherboard with on-board Creative Sound
Athlon 900 MHz Processor
Gainward GeForce4 TI 4200 Ultra Power Pack (AGP)
2×256 MBytes SDRAM (Non DDR)
Internal PCI Allied Data Technologies Modem
CD Writer & DVD Rom Drive

I use Windows 98.

The problem first occurred when I attempted to install a new modem. I had previously upgraded my grapics card from a Voodoo 5 to the above card and all worked well until until I attempted to install this new modem. and the whole system locked up whenever anything graphical was attempted. (Either 3D Mark 2001, DxDiag or Freespace 2.) I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled, and installed various drivers one by one, testing between each driver, only to find the system crashing at some point. Once the failure occurred, I could not recover the system and had to reinstall Windows again. This has happened about 5 times, and each time the system has failed at a different point in the driver installation process, so I cannot determine if a specific driver is causing the problem.

I think that I am going to go back to my Voodoo 5 card. It might be old, but at least it works.
