>> Re: GeForce 4 Problem with DirectX.
I have a compaq presario 6000z series pc, with g4 ti 4200, and nforce chipset with AMD Athlon 1800 + cpu. I use WinXP (service pack 1).I have had no problems whatso ever with my card, unless I use some of the non-WHQL drivers and they only cause stuttering and slight performance losses. Currently I use 40.72 the latest of the WHQL drivers and it runs pretty smoothly. I'm also running dx 9.0a.

I can play battlefield 1942, ut 2003, colin mcrae rally 3, postal 2, freelancer, all without any kind of bad problems. (all demo versions)
I get 33.8 mil at 1280 x 960 32bit on f-1 2002 no AA.

I benchmarked UT 2003 demo:

dm-antalus
41.754971 / 125.550858 / 448.497528 fps
Score = 125.614281

dm-antalus
15.802362 / 43.404938 / 78.984390 fps
Score = 43.436047

that's full qulity with no AA at 8x6. I don't know if that's good or bad, but it plays pretty smoothly.

I don't know a whole lot about pc's, but since people are saying they are having so many problems and that AMD's are a problem more so, but I'm thinking having the nforce chipset fixes alot of those issues.

I posted a topic on overclocking my card, and I would appreciate any advice that people could give me about that.

>> Re: AGP V6600 and XP Capture issue WDM drivers
I notice that many who post are talking about game quality, game crashing etc., but I'm trying to do video capture. Any program that has a capture ability on my system (ULead, Premiere, Windows Movie Maker) cannot even locate a capture device. The only @#$! game I'm playing is searching message boards and download sites for a fix to this problem. I know the GeForce 256 I have isn't the greatest, but for what I spent, I couldn't even use it much on Win98. What a joke. Before I go out and buy a Mac, does anyone have advice on this WDM issue? I'm not all that good at this sort of thing. My computer 512 MB, 790MHz--powerful enough but what gives?

Hmm, sounds like something going on with the WDM driver. I'm not sure what OS you are running, but if you are running Windows 98 you aren't going to be happy with video capture. Windows 98 has a 4gb limit on file sizes. In the video capture world, that's only a few minutes of capture time. With the codec I'm using, a 98 min capture took 60gb of space. In Windows 98, that would leave me with a 6 and 1/2 minute capture, max. Windows 2000 and Windows XP do not have this limitation.

However, if you are just publishing short video clips for the web, you should be ok.

790 mhz? I'm using a 1.5ghz and get occassional dropped frames. It all depends upon what quality you are capturing in and what you plan to do.

Anyway, check your WDM capture driver in the device manager. It's in there somewhere. You may need to reinstall it.

I just wonder how people can have the patience to stick with a topic for that long.

Henry,
It's a good discussion, it's just gotten too long. They need to start a new, what should I call it page?

There are many users out there that have this problem and they found the discussion and it has just grown so much. That was a very popular card as I can attest and a very good seller.

I loved that card, but now I have moved on (PNY FX 5200 Ultra).

This is strange

My problem is that my computer reboots when i trye to play a 3d game. (im trying 3dmark 2001se now, and when i press benchmark it reboots)

Some months ago i fixed my problem by removind the Cpu to AGP controller.

I had a problem yesterday, and i had to reinstall windows xp. The same problem is back again, but now if i try to remove the cpu to agp controller my detonator driver is removed to. I did not have that problem before. Now i just cant seem to remove the controller and make things work anymore,

Anyone have a clue to what i have to do to make it possible to remove the cpu to agp controller and still have my videocard working?

>> My solution to the problem with XP, AMD and GeForce4
I used to have a problem with my GeForce4 videocard. In combination with the AMD processor and Win XP, it used to crash everytime about 5 seconds after starting a videogame like vice city or combat FS 3.

I just bought a new motherboard. Cost me a 100 bucks, now I got the Asus a7v8x-x with 256 megs of DDRAM.
Problem fixed, new problem arrised:
Now it crashed after 30 mins to an hour.

Ah well, just enough to make it to the next level and save the game, right?

If anyone has the same problem let me now.
The system totally freezes, doesnt do anything, shows black screen, needs to be reset via reset button. Looks like an overheating problem but isn't according to "Asus Probe".

Tnx

I used to run directx 8.0 with at ecs k7s5a motherboard and an AMD 1600xp chip and windows xp prof. but i never experienced any of the problems that was described here. i picked up the same problem when i had my voodoo 3 in, and after upgrading to a geforce 4 440mx 4x no problems were found.

I have read this forum because I have an Abit Geforce 4 mx440 8x card that kept Freezing - Crashing - Black screening - Rebooting my System. Here is what I did that helped me. I removed the fan & heat sync from the GPU and removed the white heat sync compound which was WAY too thick and watery, and replaced it with heat sync paste covering completely. then replaced the fan & heat sync. after that I got Abit's Graphic Max software that was on my Driver CD that came with the card. This program is an overclocking utility for this card. I left the Core Clock Frequency at 275 The Memory Clock Frequency was set to 513 by default. I reset the Memory Clock Frequency to 550
I am not sure which repair fixed my problem (the heat sync paste or the reclocking the Memory Clock Frequency to 550) because I did them at the same time.

Here are some things that DID NOT work!
1 Changing system ram (changed from Corsair pc3200 to PNY pc2700)
2 Changing Video drivers (have since upgraded to Nvidia detenator 44.03 drivers)
3 Changing video fast writes to disabled (was set to disable by bios default)
4 Flashing the Motherboard Bios
5 Reseating Video card and System ram a thousand times!

I would like to thank the posts on this forum for helping me with this problem!

Biostar M7VIT with AMD 2000+
Abit GeForce4 mx440 with AGP8x
512mb PNY DDR pc2700 ram

D Provencher,

Yours sounds like it was an overheating problem. The paste you put on it is what fixed it. I've come to the determination that this problem (for just about everyone else) could be a number of things. I will say this, though. It seems to be limited to systems with a VIA chipset mixed with an NVidia graphics card. The solution is different for everyone, though. Of course it takes time and patience to figure out. I, personally, don't have time or patience. I'm a computer tech in my career and the last thing I want to do when I get home is "fix" my computer. Frustrating. However, what fixed mine was disabling Fast Writes.

I have a problem with 3D games too, every time i try to play something my screen frezzes after 5 seconds - 5 minutes. It just frezzes as if i pressed a pause button on a video player, but sound continues. The only thing that works is the reset button. My system specs are:

P3 1.13ghz CPU (used to have P3 800mhz)
EP-3VSA2 mobo with VIA Apollo Pro133t AGPset (used to have older one, dont know what it was but still had the same crash)
Windows me / xp sp2
Geforce 4 TI4200 64mb (tried all drivers form 2x.xx up to the new 45.xx)
512mb RAM
DirectX 9.0a (Tried 8.0 - 9.0a all versions)

My second computer doesnt get this problem and i dont know why, if anyone could compare these 2 pecs and find something in them then let me know. The second system specs are:

Athlon 1.2ghz
Mobo (dont know what one) with SiS chipset
Windows xp pro (no sp's installed)
Geforce 2 MX 64mb (i tried the geforce 4 on that system too and didnt get any crash)
512mb RAM
DirectX 9.0

Currently i have the problem on both my windows boots on the first system, and i have had this problem on all windows i have ever tried in the last 8 months (win 98 se / win me / win 2000 (all sp versions tried) / win xp (all sp versions tried)) on that system and the only windows that doesnt have this problem is win 98, and the only reason it doesnt crash is because it doesnt install the mobo so i cant do anything :P

For over half a year i have tried every fix i can find, in this forum and others, and the only thing i have been told that works that i havnt tried yet is to get a mobo with a SiS chipset as they dont seem to get this problem. If anyone can think of anything else that could be causing this crash on my system please let me know.

Well can someone who has read all 21 pages of these post please help me out here as I am just too tired to move on any longer.

I just built a pc Friday. It is an xp 2500 barton with 512mb pc 2700 memory and a msi k7n2 delta-L mobo. I pulled the geforce 4 mx 440 4x agp card from my old system which has windows xp pro it and put it in this new system. I have the symptom's that are posted in this forum.

I have updated to the latest bios updated mobo drivers reverted back to the 28.42 nvidia drivers that worked fine with winxp on my old system. I have disabled vga fast write, disabled 8x support. I have done the svc pack updates on win xp. i have not tried direct x 9.0 yet on this os but was having the exact same problem saturday morning on this computer with win 2000 pro installed on it with every update imagineable on it.

WHAT is going on here???? Will this problem last for the next 100 years?? I have seen people post here saying that they narrowed down to a via driver or via bios....some have posted junk about sis...i guess i am double hosed here as i have freaking nvidia chipset on my motherboard as well!!!! ya think that it would work smooth as glass eh???

I am just slap burnt out on this new system as I built it for GAMING only and it will do anything but GAME!!!!! With all the changes that I made so far I have increased my game time from freezing or just plain shutting down from say 30 sec to 1 minute to around 5 minutes now...woohoo yea man that will rock counterstrike to death eh??? I can change my name to the 5 minute killer then im gone....lol

One of the reason's i built this system was to take advantage of the 8x agp and my mx440 is only a 4x but you know how we all cut corners to get the "system" that we really want...8x card would have to wait a month or so to get added in.

I haven't seen any posts that entertain this thought...is is happening on 4x agp boards with 4x cards? My first suspicions were the new 8x board and my 4x card in it. Anyway. I am at the end of the road and ready to drop this thing off the cliff any help from any of you guys would be greatly appreciated as i have said ... my noodle is cooked overdun....

later,
MGB

I fixed it.

Those of you with VIA chipsets
do these things in this order

1. remove your video driver
2. reboot
3. install fresh copy of video driver
4. reboot
5. install via4in1 4.37 NOT HYPERION
6. reboot
7. enjoy your games

if this works for you please tell me

So what is the magical deal here? Do I need to go with Raedon this week so I can game again? I went in and uninstalled my vid card and let windows put their certified sissy driver on and counterstrike ran for like 3 or 4 minutes and poof....i was staring at my desktop again.

My old system was a 900 tbird with a gigabyte ga7zx mobo with winxp and even ran win2k pro both with the geforce 4 mx440. it worked really good on both os's and I never had a problem with gaming.

For some reason I decided to upgrade my system to this fancy one that games like dog crap now. This is the only place on the web that I see postings for this problem.

Windows---no problem
nvidia--no problem
msi--- no problem

So there is just no problem at all out there. We are just a bunch of insane idiots that imagine our crap is crashing like mad cow disease.

For the love of humanity.....WHERE IS THE FIX??????

The fix is to install your favorite video driver first then update the CHIPSET DRIVERS FOR YOUR MOTHERBOARD.

I am having a problem with Via GeForce4 and Direct X also
I am running the following system:
MB: Soyo P4VSA with Via VT8753+8233 Chipset
Bios: Award P4VSA-2BA2
CPU: Pentium 4 2.4Ghz 400Mhz FSB
Ram: PNY 2x 512MB PC133 (1024MB)
Sound: Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 Model SB0100
Video: PNY Verto GeForce4 Ti4200 64MB DDR
OS: Windows 98SE
Direct X: 8.1-9.0a

Everything was working fine until I originally tried to install GTA: VC and it installed DX9 while I wasn't looking and caused driver problems that could not be fixed so I reinstalled windows and DX9a with the Detonator 44.03 drivers, the Direct 3d tests all passed but when I went to run games they would freeze or give me a DDhelp error. I messed around with using older drivers and older Direct X but that did not help either, and now when I try to run the direct 3d test with any driver/direct x combo the computer passes direct x 7 test then freezes and waits for a reset on the DX8 test. I have tried removing 1 stick of ram (didn't work), tried running the Via test driver (didn't work), I flashed my bios to the current version posted (no change) Tried to install with and without all windows critical updates found it better have no updates as having them gave me a windows protection fault you must restart your computer after installing the video drivers. I have also tried taking the sound card out of the MB on a rumor that SB Live! doesn't work well with GeForce4 ( I have another pc that they work fine in). I have tried all kinds of detonator and Via drivers but nothing seems to work, I liked it more when I was at least able to pass the direct X direct 3d test but now nothing seems to get me past the DX8 test.

Anyone have the same problem or anything else to try before I go buy a new video card/os? Also suggestions for an OS to get these devices working with DX9 would be nice.
