Hi,

As you can see this thread is rather long, i'll try to save you some time. First go in your bios and enable agp x4, lower your refresh rate 60mhz or default, check your power supply should be at least 300 watts, leave your case open and let a small fan blow into it, remove any device sharing a IRQ with your vid card, check your ram modules 1 at a time.

ok all this is assuming you have all the latest drivers and updates.

went through it for 2 months so i've tried everything, reducing the core clock speed from 250 to 200 helped me, but mine is pny with lifetime warranty and soon to be replace GF4Ti 4200 64ddr

Here is my solution, I hope it might help someone

I reinstalled the 4in1 drivers and if you follow the steps there is a "install AGP device" "uninstall AGP device" (not sure those are the exact options) I clicked on uninstall, computer reboots finds new hardware installs the drivers reboots again and now everything works fine...I guess it was just out of luck but keep trying, there is a solution not involving new hardware.

note: this is not a gaurentee, it is just every solution i have found that works
for different people accross the internet, which hopefully will help you or narrow
down the cause of this stupid motherf**kin lame problem.

intro; ...

nvidia f**king suck, never again am i buying a nvidia based card, not even if i had lots of
money to blow and wanted to buy a fx5900 agp 8x 256mb ddr ram super duper triax graphics card ever.
please join the NBA, - 'nVidia boycotting assosiation' by saying 'f**k nvidia' whenever you see
a message concering nvidia on some forum.

cards affected -

geforce4 ti 4200 is the main one

it doesnt matter if its 64/128mb, any model manufactor, or agp4x or 8x.

i have seen people with 4400's and 4600's which have problems but im not sure if its quite the
fkin same.

my gfx card: Inno3d GeForce4 Ti4200 64mb AGP 8x.

---------------------

People have said that the problem is to do with, Athlon based motherboards, VIA chipsets, DirectX and
microsoft.

I believe that the truth is that the geforce4 chip is too gay and nvidia suck and cant make stable
cards that do not heat up too fast or whatever. I mean this is the f**king 2000 generation where
computers get better every day, nvidia the 'top graphics company' couldnt even make a f**king good
card which isnt clocked too high, or doesnt have a good heatsink just so that they could spend the
littlest ammount of money.

-) Using detonator 29.42 - (works 4 some)

-) using newest detonators - (works 4 some)

-) Using AGP2x mode. - (this has worked for me, but you are not using the most of your gfx card
and you do notice it, my card is actually 8x capable but it cant even use 4x
for god sakes) - NOTE: I HAVE NEVER SUCCESSFULLY USED 8x MODE FOR SOME CORRUPTED
REASON.

-) Uninstalling VIA drivers - (this actually has worked for me aswell, but after 2+ hours it froze)

-) Installing VIA Test Driver - (works 4 some)

-) disabling fastwrites in bios - (works 4 some)

-) Underclocking your card about 50mhz - (works 4 some)

-) doing some wierd mechanical s**t to yor card which cools it down but is too complicated -
(works 4 some)

-) Try going into BIOS and pressing CTRL+F1, it may unlock hidden options that you were not aware of
Play with those!!!!!

-) open your computer's case, place a desktop fan blowing into it - (works 4 some)

-) removing any device that is sharing the same IRQ with your g4 - (works 4 some)

-) PCI Latency Fix? - (works 4 some)

replace the card, because in many cases the problem is still there.

alot of you are probably rich and have good jobs or could just blag some money of your parents
and buy a better card and just forget about this lame g4 but i cant so fu.

Buy a bigger PSU. 350watt is FINE - i dont thinkanybody has bought a better PSU and fixed the problem

Buy another card. [unless you are rich fux]

Hey Folks,

Another new tidbit, It seems someone has been flooding the market faulty capasitors. A bad recipe or imcomplete process is missing certain additives causing them to pop, this is mostly happening on Abit mobo's but if you look at any mobo they have 'bout 20 ( little barrels w/x's on top), and their a bunch on my GF4ti4200 that have some brown ooze coming out (not good). Luckily they only cost a quarter a peice to replace for most. they control the electrical currents in your comp.

they sell kits with instructions or u can send it out for repairs for about 50 bucks

GF4 Ti4200 is a Great Card mine ran for a year and a half befo this

this card can outperform the fx5200 and possibly rival that of 5600 so don't throw it away just yet!

GF4 Ti4200 64ddr x4
core 250 ,mem speed 513

Hi, this is my first post and i am having some major problems with what i think is a gfx card problem and am at my wits end. I have a ASUS A7V333 mobo, XP2000+ @1666mhz, 256 DDR ram and a Gainward GeForce4Ti 4200 (64mb ram) gfx card. Basically I have no idea why but at random intervals when using windows as well as every time i try to play a graphics intense game (such as the new need for speed game or half life counter strike) the system freezes and the screen goes lots of bright and crazy colours. At this point the power button is the only option as the system has crashed. I'm pretty sure its a graphics card problem. I have tried reinstallng windows and also tried several different graphics drivers from nvidia and nothing seems to fix the problem. I have only had the card 14 months and have never had any problems with my system before. Any ideas anyone? Please feel free to e mail me with any ideas, any input would be much appreciated as with it being close to christmas i cannot afford to replace my gfx card!

Paul

After months,

Of aggravating troubleshooting it seems the problem is faulty capasitors (round barrels w/x's) the GF4 line is clocked really high, which is why it's a great card for the money! I just bought a mx400 64ddr as a replacement until my GF4 Ti4200 gets back from PNY (lifetime warranty) and it really sucks by comparison. so repair or replacement are the only viable options. Radeons having same probs, they all buy capasitors same place i guess, Taiwan newer cards should be more stable, mine ran for one and a half years before blowing it's capasitors never oc'ed

Hi,
I incidentally came across this thread [& forum] whilst searching Yahoo for a problem I believed to be related to DirectX, a belief I had [& still have] before I even knew about half these problems etc that others were/are having. Lots of interesting info here I must say. Anyhow...

AMD AthlonXP 2000+
ASUS A7N266 Motherboard, with VIA chipset.
1GB Ram [1x2100PC, & 1x3200PC]
4GB Virtual Memory
80GB Drive x7200 RPM, Seagate Baracuda
Onboard Sound; VIA AC' 97.
Geforce Ti 4800SE 128MB; [device drivers used; see below]
DirectX 9.0B
WinXP [with a variety of updates, but not SP1. I refuse to use MS auto-updates anymore, since it once changed the admin rights on my computer, believe it or not].

some background info;
I am an avid SimCity fan, and not to long ago I bought the [above Graphics] card & installed the Device Drivers that came with the card [being Drivers 42.30] . No problems at all, least not for awhile. Then, the problems started. It initially just started crashing to the desktop, then as time went on it got worse, to the point of rebooting the computer. The monitor [seemed as if it] would also go into stand-by mode, thus requring to reboot the computer manually. The thing is, nothing was done or changed to the computer that should of caused this, at all [least not to my consenting knowledge. No one uses this computer but me]. From before it started crashing, to when it did start crashing & rebooting; no device drivers were actually changed. No BIOS settings were changed, no other hardware configurations were changed etc etc.

I have tried a variety of things, from changing BIOS settings to changing/removing around the Hardware to playing different games. Nothing I've done so far has worked. I have noticed some differences though with some things [playing Alpha Centauri it reboots the computer rather more often/quicker than my other games]. I use to think that these games were the problem, but the more I read, test, research, etc, the more convinced I am that it is indeed a DirectX issue. Admittedly [& obviously], I haven't tried everything though, as that would be very time consuming indeed [not to much just plain rediculous]. A lot of things mentioned in this thread I have tried, and a number of other things that I haven't tried I intend to [thank you very much btw all who have contributed, for all the info/advice here].
There is one thing though that gets me; I completely removed the Geforce card and its related drivers, opting to use the Onboard Video instead. Doing this though didn't help [much], I still get crashes etc. So to me, I can't see how this is a problem solely restricted to Geforce 4 Cards. SimCity 4 creates these Exception Reports when it crashes, and a few of these reports points to a problem with DirectX, specifically DirectDraw. Dunno if this is of any help or not [doubt it], but hey what the heck, least I don't feel so alone anymore, as I know others out there have the same problem.

I must say, I am rather surprised that this thread [& this issue] has carried on for so long. Makes one wonder whose doing what to who and why.

I had a similar problem (system crash, monitor standby, sound loop) with my Gainward NVidiaFX5200, especially while playing games but sometimes in just plain Windows.
Then I got RivaTuner to underclock. It seems to run much more stable now, at least so far.
Get RivaTuner at http://www.guru3d.com/rivatuner/
Use RivaTuner and set both standard2D and performance3D's core clocks from 250 to 200. Don't forget to check the box so that these settings are applied after each Windows boot.
These options are located in Main tab, click the triangle-shaped button near "Customize..." in the "Driver settings" in the middle of the window, then click on the first icon (adapter or something) that appears.

BTW, make sure you don't run the VIA Hyperion 4in1 driver if you don't have the VIA board. It may edit your registry before asking you whether you would like to install, and thus make your CD drives disappear for good!

i hi had a kt3 ultra board, 1800+ 512mb 2700sdram, geforce2pro, 300wat power, bought 2500+ and fx5900 (td128) MSI.

after installation, any 3d game would crash after 2 mins of play..3d blocks/lines on screen..no ctrl+alt+del works..reset still displays blocks on bios b ootup screen, only option is to power off and on, then screen is normal...lowering core clock of gfx card to 300 seems to make things work...but i dont want to do this, it should run at 400.i never overclock mem cpu or gfx by the way..disregard sound as an issue and lan as i have disabled/removed until i get the games going at full 400mhz clock speed..

i have tried all last 3 bios revisions of the kt3 ultra, and all bios settings like agp 1x etc etc etc....no avail...tried with and without via drivers....no avail. all detonator drivers from 2940 upto 5303 no avail..

so, i bought a q-tec 550 wat powewr supply, dual fanned...same

so bought new case, 3 fans included, 1 of is side mounted, (see thru case) .....same.

thought my 2700 mem was at fault, so bought 2x256 twinmos ddr400....same...
tried at 133 166 and 200 speeds.....also tried cpu at slower/faster speeds.....same

bought a nforce2 board (not ultra), same....

yes yes, i have reformatted etc etc, tried with nforce drivers and so on, same...
if i put my geforce2 in, all is ok..

so i have literally built a new pc, but problem still exists...
i have been on every board and it seems a lot of people have this, not just with the fx5900, but with most hi-end cards.

is there anything more you can suggest?
bearing in mind i work in I.T and have probably tried it.
cpu temp is at 40, gfx card temp is at 45 2d, rising to 60 3d by the way.....not removed fan from back end too.
what is the recommended temp for 3d cards?
it maybe just a faulty card?
1 thing i noticed is that on the back there is only a fan, no heatsink...front has a massive heatsink and fan by the way...

i cannot press start key to go back to windows unlike some ppl, it locks pc totally...reset still displays pixels/blocks, until i power off and on.
no events in event viewer too....

BOTTOM LINE IS...THE TITLE OF THIS THREAD IS CALLED GEFORCE 4 PROBLEM WITH DIRECT X. AND THAT IS INACCURATE. CAUSE IF THERE WAS A PROBLEM...IT WOULD HAPPEN TO EVERYONE. AND I HAVE NO PROBLEMS AT ALL...SO YOU CANT SLANDER A NAME UNTIL YOU KNOW FOR SURE. I RUN DX9.0b ON A SOLTEK NFORCE 2 ULTRA BOARD. latest drivers for everything....geforce ti4600....i had a pny and changed to an asylum. i sold the pny to a guy on ebay...cause i was going to try the ATI 9700 pro. you wanna talk about problems...buy an ATI card.
but i have NEVER NEVER NEVER had any problems with nvidia.

right.....purely from a geforce point of view.....can all people please install the hidden feature patch, (enables gpu + mem clocking up or down)
http://download.guru3d.com/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=201

clock 3d frequency to same as 2d for your geforce.....mine is a fx, so 300 2d 400 3d...
underclocked 3d to 300 and all games work flawlesley.

so i clocked it up......crashing...
then i looked at temp gauge in the nvidia control panel...
43ish 2d....soon as i run a 3d game it goes to 53ish....keep alt+tabbing through games back to desktop to check your temps please mine goes upto 63ish i think, but its hard to see as as soon as you alt tab to desktop it QUICKLY drops to 55 or so....it must be temp/power related from a geforce point of view because lowering clock to 300 works...but need to know the temp settings that are safe for these cards.

please all geforce owners try this please....if you have not got a FX card, just lower whatever clock setting by 100.

then if all works, put it back to normal, or just below, and alt+tab from a 3d game.
core slowdown is 135 degrees on my card, but thats way too high...seems to crash about 65ish.
i need to know other users temp settings and also if other users lowering clock solves probs..
this is not a fix for me as i aint paying cash for something i gotta slowdown, but its getting nearer the problem.

back on topic time wasters....how do you figure i was off topic....my whole point was related to the topic...which you....among others mis interpreted. your problem has nothing to do with direct x and geforce. because i use directx and geforce and have no problems. so the problem is something else. has to be otherwise....EVERYONE THAT USED DIRECTX AND GEFORCE WOULD HAVE A PROBLEM. DOES ANYONE SEE MY POINT??? ANYONE???

I have started to think....finally! Problem must be some of new drivers.
I never had problems with anything with my old machine XP1900+, Ti4800SE etc..
EDIT- I didnt have Inet connection!!! now when i have i have problems also?
(Maybe its some WORM that screws even graphicdrivers? hope not..)

Why suddenly everybody is getting problems with everything?
I dont know! and i hope somebody makes some fix that fixes all....

Look at ati problems example? every new card have them 9100, 9200 ,9600 ,9800 ,9700(not so new)
Maybe it is DX9.0B??

Weird that High-end FX cards doesnt seem to have problems? (Maybe they are so damn good)

I believe in firepower..

Sorry I don't have time to go through all the replies.

I recently got a Ti4600. I have tried it in 3 different AMD / VIA machines that all had previous Nvidia cards run fine. In each one it had the same problem. Under 2000 and XP it would not run any directX programs (not even dxdiag). But under 98SE it would not even install, it would lock trying to enter windows.

I did get it to run on one of the systems, but only under 98 and it was a KT133A with the original drivers CD. But in this machine the GF3 is equally as fast (slow CPU).

I quit playing with XP/2000 and focused on 98SE (I was getting file corruption under XP/2000).

After alot of fiddling, I reinstalled windows (98SE), directX and detonator driver but without the VIA 4in1. Bingo! it worked. I installed the VIA 4in1 and it killed it. I blew it away again and reinstalled everything except for the VIA AGP driver and it works.

The sucky thing is that my GF3 runs in this system fine with the VIA AGP driver and gets a better score in 3dm2k1.

I am going to try that VIA test driver now.

I hope it works =)

OK, this is my last shot before I throw my computer out of my 4th story window. PLEASE HELP, you guys seem to be pretty good (650 replies???). HERE'S A CHALLENGE FOR YOU! I received my 5600Fx card back from PNY last week and tried to get it to work with my system again. Here's my config real quick:
Intel 865PERL motherboard
2.6Ghz P4
PNY NVidia 5600Fx Ultra
Windows NT

These are the changes I've made in the past few days to try and get it to work:

- Installed new card

- Clean-installed Windows XP Pro (previously 2000 Pro)

- Deleted all video drivers working in "safe mode", then reinstalled the latest 53.xx Detonator drivers from the NVidia website.

- Netmeeting, Messenger, VirusScan, and all other non-essential background apps have been stopped and still no 3D acceleration

This is after basically rebuilding the computer from the ground up with a new Intel 865PERL motherboard, 2.6Ghz P4 processor, and now a brand new OS too. (see below for more details please)

The following problems are still persistent:

- no hardware acceleration of any kind is available (directdraw or 3d)

- Ogre, Fairy, and Fairy Ultra demos work perfectly fine (???????)

- dxdiag cannot detect memory of card

- dxdiag reports no problems with DirectX files (see attached log from my latest dxdiag run)

- no direct3d of any kind is available causing all games to not load or crash immediately on startup (Halo, Mechwarrior, Civ III, Splinter Cell, >etc...)

- the irq assigned to the card is not shared by any other process or hardware (#16)

- tried dirextx 8.1, 9.0, and 9.0b - all with no success

- retried old drivers that came on CD with card, and detonator drivers with no result.

- shut down all unnecessary background applications with no result.

Am I maybe missing something in the security settings of XP Pro or something in the System Configuration which would disable Direct3D?? Right now I don't know what else to do. If this card just won't work with my configuration, what other options do I have?

Any help would be most appreciated - I've run out of options I can think of.

Thank you,

Jim

HERE'S WHAT I'VE TRIED:::

1. Update to the latest nVidia driver for the video card? The latest driver can be obtained >from nVidia's download page located at http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp.

DONE - detonator 53.xx installed (12/24/2003)

2. Also make sure that you have all the latest update files from Microsoft for your operating >system as well as your Internet Explorer - including DirectX, >http://microsoft.com/downloads/sear...en&categoryid=2 (Do Not >use Version 9 from the CD, if you have the latest nVidia drivers installed. Microsoft has >a newer version 9.0b (recently released)) Critical files, as well as other security, and >Internet Explorer update files. You may also want to consider updating to the latest version >of Internet Explorer. The updates can be obtained by clicking on the following link >http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/default.htm You may also want to visit >http://www.opengl.org/ if you are experiencing OpenGL issues.

DONE - 9.0b and IE 6 installed - also clean-installed Windows XP (12/24/2003)

6. You should also verify that the motherboard has a 2.0 complaint AGP Slot. A 1.0 >compliant slot is not adequate to operate our cards.

DONE - installed new Intel 865PERL motherboard w/ 2.0

7. To check if your AGP slot is 2.0 compliant please go to this site http://www.powerleap.com/ >on the main page, on the left click on "Quick CPU Upgrade Finder" When it finishes click on >the "Mainboard" Tab then look at the heading toward the bottom that says AGP. Under that >you will see the Revision number in this box is what you have. The other tabs tell you about >your system as well.

DONE - 2.0 8x AGP slot

8. If you have an AGP 8x motherboard, check the BIOS, if you have AGP voltage set to >AUTO, change it to 1.5 Volts. This setting might be found under the chipset features, it may >be found in another place as each BIOS is different.

DONE - voltage 1.5

9. Please make sure that you have the most recent version of DirectX (DX9.0b) installed.

DONE - 9.0b installed

10. Also verify that your system has a minimum of a 300 watt power supply. We do, however, >recommend a power supply of 350 watts or greater.

DONE - installed new 400w power source

11. 300 watts should be enough provided you do not add too many more devices to your >system. We recommend the 350 because there have been issues in the past where there >were too many devices connected to the system causing a power draw too much for the >video card to handle.

DONE

12. If you have a Tyan motherboard or a Soyo Dragon motherboard and are having >compatibility issues updating the system BIOS for this board should fix the issue. You will >need to check with the motherboard manufacturer's website to see if they have the latest >BIOS for your model.

DONE - upgraded Intel BIOS to 10/03 version (P.12) (12/24/2003)

14. If none of this can be achieved in a reasonable amount of time you may need to return >the card to the store as incompatible.

JUST RECEIVED A NEW CARD FROM PNY VIA RMA RETURN ON 12/23/2003. HAS NOT FIXED PROBLEM.

15. Access the MSCONFIG of your system if applicable and disable any old drivers from the >old video card if present and then reboot and try again.

STARTED IN "SAFE MODE" AND COMPLETELY CLEANED OUT OLD DRIVERS, THEN REINSTALLED THE CARD AND THE DETONATOR 53.xx DRIVERS. STILL NO DIRECT3D ACCELERATION OR CAPABILITY OTHERWISE

>> Re: GeForce 4 Problem with DirectX.
Hi All,

I too have been experiencing the windows XP system hang using the following system :-

AMD XP2100
MSI KT4 Ulltra
Gainward Geforce 4 TI 4800 64 MB
256MB PC2100
Linksys LNE100TX(v5) (PCI)
350 Watt PSU

I had been reading this forum trying all the diffferant advice when I stumbled accross the fact that if I removed my Network Interface Card my sstem was then completely stable whilst playing games.

I have had this system now for approx 18 months and as it used to work with no problems at all. I use the MSI Live monitor and use it to automatically update all of my motherboard drivers including bios and VIA chipset.
During the course of this PC's life somewhere along the line it started to freeze when playing 3D games.
I have a spare hard drive, so I formatted the drive and started from scratch installing the OS (Win XP) + all service packs, Direct X 9.0b + all latest video + motherboard drivers. Still crashed when playing 3D games. It was during this trial that I left the Network Card out of the machine and everything worked fine except no network / internet.

I tried a differant NIC with no success.

Can someone please help me with this as it is driving me crazy?
