If you see my previous post a little further up, you will see that my problem started about 2 weeks ago, with a totally different system to the one I'm using now. All I did at the time different was to install a new game.

Ok, I tried the patch, and 3DMark ran 3 times before deciding to crash, then when my system rebooted, my graphics we're corrupt and my screen was showing 8bit properties only.

I've since reinstalled latest detonator drivers and back to square 1 again :(

i just installed winxp yesterday and got the exact same symptoms that everyone has described. i have a gainward g4 ti4200, athlon 1 ghz, via kt133a and 640 mb of ram. i tried several things, among them downgrading to the 40.72 nvidia drivers, installing the new via 4-in-1 4.45 drivers, and installing the test drivers. none of the above helped. then i read http://forums.viaarena.com/messageview.cfm?catid=25&threadid=9263, posted earlier by ronnie delafosse. i have 2 256 mb sticks and 1 128 mb. i pulled out the 128 and all of my problems were solved. everything works like it should now. try removing 1 or more of your ram sticks and see if that helps.

Do you think it was a power problem to run the 2nd stick of ram? I am thinking it could be. I have not put my finger on it at the time and I don't anyone else has. It is a pain in the you know where.LOL

yea most likely. i have a 350 watt, which should be adequate, so i dunno. that other board says somethign about the amount of power needed at a certain voltage. i didnt quite understand it all, but getting rid of some of the ram worked. i removed a 128 stick and then put it back and took out a 256, and the 3d stuff worked both times, so i guess it doesnt matter the size of the ram. odd...

I've finally solved my problem.......

I got a new motherboard, processor and memory.

So my fault looks like it was down to 3 things, either my motherboard, processor or 100mhz memory.

My new system specs are:
WinXP Pro (no updates)
Standard DirectX drivers that come with WinXP
KT4 Ultra Motherboard (FSB 333)
AMD Athlon XP2000
256 DDR (333Mhz) Ram
GeForce 4 TI 420
40G Hardrive

The way I read it, it doen't matter about the amount of ram. It matter of the type . Some ram with draw more power than others and ram can draw up to 40amp. That is a big differents if you are on the edge of the limit of your power supply. I look at it like this. In you home or mine anyway. I have a 15 amp breaker and it is loaded in a area of my home. Every thing works well, but then I use the vaccum and the breaker flips. so I have the power for the room, but not for the vaccum and I think this how this problem is. I could run my motherboard and old video card, but I put in a geforce4 and it draws to much power for my power supply.
I am just giving my opinion for ppls who may not understand. Then I can be wrong.

sorry about the previous guys, I just wanted to make sure I can post to this forum, now, here's my system:

Proc: AMD Athlon XP 2200
Card: MSI GeForce4 Ti 4200 8x
Ram: 256 DDR ram (266 MHz)
Mob: ASUS A7N8X

Windows 2000, SP3
NVidia reference drivers 41.09
VGA Bios 4.28.20.05.11
MB Bios 1001.G
MB Version 1.16

From my experiences:

no amount of driver fiddling for us poor non-via chipset users will help.

I did switch the resolution to 640x480 while running the Splinter Cell Demo, and was able to play with no trouble at all.. I then slowly bumped up the res to 800x600, and then 1024x768.. the game then crashes

I get the following blue screen, but only because I changed the control panel settings for automatically reboot, it would have rebooted..

KMOD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Okay, I put my hand on the GeForce4 and it felt very warm while running the game in 1024x768 (I was able to play for about 30-60 seconds)

so what did I do, well I put a CPU sized heatsink, and CPU Fan on the top of the card, (the MSI GeForce has a big metal plate on the solder side of the board)

after this change (And nothing else, I assure you) I was able to play the game for about 30 minutes, I then exitted the game, no crash.

I hesitate to call this a solution, I have yet to try the game in 1280x1024 which is my goal for today.

I have not tried changing AGP to 1X or disabling fast writes in the bios.. I'm currently upgrading to directX 9, then I will make the above 2 changes, and give it a shot.

Barring the above 2 (I don't mind a slight performance hit, for utter-stability) I will call MSI today and talk to them.

I'll keep this forum posted.

Cheers

Evan

whoops, forgot to mention:

ran memtest86 for 4 hours without errors, didn't get all the way through the test though (I manually quit).

I replaced the previous stick of memory, but no change.

I tried that test driver BETA thing, and it didn't help one bit. Then I downloaded this driver http://www.guru3d.com/files/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=346 and it works fine!! Hope this will help you.

My system specs:
Asus A7Pro
AMD Duron 950@1272
Inno3D GeForce4 Ti4200
320MB SDRAM

My system is a ECS K7S5A version 1.0 mb with a AMD XP 2000+ with 512 MB SDRAM, 2 PC133 DIMMs, PSU is 300Watts. After I purchased a Geforce 4 128 T14200 card the system would freeze everytime I started up 3D games or after the machine would idle for more then 10 min. if i lowered the FBS to 100/133 or 100/133, I could play games with no crashes at all and it would be stable. As you know this lowers the speed of the CPU to 1256 Mhz. I had installed DirectX 8.0 and 8.1 and was using WinXP Pro.

The FIX!!!

Since I purchaded a retail version of the AMD Athalon XP 2000+ that comes with a AMD green fan and heatsink, I thought it should be more than adequate for cooling the CPU. Turns out that it is not so!! I looked at the temp of the system and it would be over 60C. Therefore if you run you CPU at 133/133 it runs much hotter then at 100/133. I replace the fan and heatsink and now the system is stable in all sorts of 3D games. System does not get over 58C-60C. I can even use the CheepoBios to run it at 138/138 which makes the CPU a XP 2100+ about 1725 MHZ!! and it can be stable with no freezes or crashes.

I hope this helps anyone with 133/133 crashes. get CPUcool progy to see how hot your system gets when you play games.

It seem that some people think they my have problems with their software but I'm betting that since they upgrade to a Geforec4 card they begin to see more crashes during games and it's mainly because thier CPU is getting very hot during games and it freezes. Iether change the heatsink and fan. Since thier computer was running just fine before then new card they don't think that it could be the problem.

I HIGHLY recommend that everyone with this problem try this website - http://forums.viaarena.com/messageview.cfm?catid=25&threadid=9263, after all of the drivers and configuring, in the end, taking out 2 of my RAM sticks fixed the problem. I am going to get a more powerful power supply soon and see if I can put my RAM back in, because I only have 128MB left after taking my 2 out. This was shown above a long time ago, so if you haven't tried it yet, please do and see if it works for you.

Fingers-crossed Im on day 3 with no problems.
My XP2000+ runs at around 42C - 47C.

Also I've been advised not to put Directx9 on my machine.

Cheers

I have the same problems (i mentioned it a couple a weeks ago).
But I am for sure that it is not my cpu getting overheated.
I am thinkin in the way of my new agp slot. It is a 1.5v slot for agp 8x.
And I think many gf4 cards are 3.3v.

People, I have had the same problem. I have a Dell Dimension 8100. I have tried permutations covering 2 different BIOSs, 4 different NVIDIA drivers, 3 different DirectX installations, and 3 different MS OSs. My amateur conclusion is that the card is for s_it. To prove this, I just dumped another $200 on an ATI Radeon 9500 and everything is fine.

I will never purchase another NVIDIA card.

I Have as follows

AMD 1200
win xp home
NVidia Gforce4 TI 4200 128 video memory
direct x 8
512k memory

I Have no problems running games or any thing else. Only thing I can think of is in your bios is it setup for AGP to PCI slot?
