XP automatically logs out... Security issue?

Got a call from a friend. He got a Dell 4800 tower from his son. The son upgraded the system from ME to XP. Somewhere along the line, someone added a BIOS level password. He couldn't get passed that screen, so I cleared the CMOS, but it was still there. I got into the Bios and disabled the Bios level password upon startup. So it boots into XP and displays the logon screen to select your account. (There's only 1.) So I click on his name and says it's logging in. A few seconds later it says it's logging out and takes you back to the XP login screen.

In all my experience, I've never seen this happen. I'm assuming that it's a feature in xp that was enabled when the BIOS password kicked in. I tried booting in safemode, but the same thing happens when trying to login as admin, it just logs you back out to the main screen.

Anyone ever see this happen before and know how to disable it via a dos util or regedit? Did the Bios password cause this?
