>> Re: FX-53 (Socket 94) ...What to do?
Hello everybody,

First post...here goes,

I just came across an awesome price for an FX-53, the only thing is that it was a 940 pin socket. I got it anyway. Now I'm just looking for a nice motherboard to go with it. I originally wanted to get a mobo with the SLI technology, since I was planning on making this a sick gaming machine. But there is none that I've found so far,ore one that has the single PCI-Express 16x slot. Nor any news that they're planning on making one soon. So lets say that I compromise on that, I mean I could still make pretty mean system. So what if I have to use registered ECC memory, it wont make that much of a difference.

Here's what I've been lookinh at:
- Asus SK8V or the SK8N (I'm leaning more towards the latter with the nVidia nForce3)
- Gigabyte K8NNXP (Read some good reviews on)
- Theres one from MSI and one from Leadtech

I think I like the gigabyte one the best. I would highly appreciate any feedback from owners of these mobos. Or anyone know of more or better ones?

I'm also planning on overclockign the processor, with more than adequate cooling (I'm looking at water systems). Which mobo would be best for the setup?

One last question for you guys....This is maybe a dumb question, but I was just wondering. Since some of the mobos I've come across are made for both the 940 FX series AND Opterons, would I be able to run DUAL FX-53s on a mobo made exclusively for the Opteron?

Thank you all for your replies.

-Andrei

OK, LOL< LOL>

AMD have NO PCi express currently avaiable (about two weeks away), Im am unsure if they will use socket 940 chips on these either.

some info on PCI express boards is on my site (under motherboards on hardware section two available)

But Ive not heard about weather they will be or will not be using 940 for this. you should have got our (HWA) advice before you bought it.. Never mind, You live, You learn.

If you would have bought it from me, :) I would have asked you first..

Rory -

It was a minor overlook on my part upon placing the bid for the chip, but I'm not too concerned. After placing the $500 max bid and confirming, I soon thereafter saw the dreaded (at the time) "Socket 940" written in there without standing out or anything, right in between the other stats. I'm like "Oh NOOOO!!!" Too late, hoping, praying someone would outbid me. With still a good 20 hrs left in the auction I figured I might have a chance. LOL....(Come on everybody, u know u have all done it at one point or another in one form or another)LOL. So as the hours went by, it became apparent that I was stuck with it, (a small fluctuation in price $10 more within the last hour), I started to do more research on this 940 sucker. (Before I get criticized for my ignorance, I just wanna justify myself in saying that this will be the First AMD chip (and soon to be system) that I have ever owned. (The winning bid was a total of $420) <- Not too shabby eh????

-And thanx Rory for the offer...maybe I'll go to you for any future purchases (still missing the rest of the components)::::wink, wink:::::

Yeah so I wont be able to utilize the PCI Express technology, but I think I got the best of both worlds. The FX-53's are both doing awesome on the benchmarks that I've looked at (940 a lil lower in some tests), and I'm going to take the use of registered DIMMs as a blessing for a more dependable machine. I'm willing to fork over the few extra bucks towards the memory in return for it's reliability. But ne thing I am trully dissapointed over is the loss in the DDR bandwith speed. 940 clcoks in at 800 MhZ per side as opposed to 1GhZ per side in the 939 pin.

All in all, I'll prolly pick up a mobo for like 150 or less...wel'll see....and for its total price I'm gonna have a DAMN good system. Hopefully by x-mas,

Thank you for your post, that was a great link comparing all the boards I was looking at. I will keep looking into the matter, since I wanna be 100% sure of the ease of overclocking. I read somewhere that the FX chips have unlocked multipliers as opposed to its 64-bit brethren, but as per one review I read....(damn I really gotta save these damn links, which are now taking me forever to find again) The MSI board doeas not support that. If I'm wrong anyone please correct me.

But how's the SK8V working out for you. Any problems whatsoever? Have you attempted to OC yours? (not that I condone this kind of behavior)

-Thanx again for any replies

Ok I knew I had a chip on my shoulder for the SK8V, but didn't remeber why.....I saw this (http://www4.tomshardware.com/cpu/20040318/athlon-fx53-03.html) and decided against it, but all the other stuff I read on it (Thanx JJ) make it seem the way to go. The two reviews seem to contradict each other.
<<<Hopelessly confused>>>>

And if I choose the nVidia nForce3 Chipset (no longer a south/north bridge), will I still be able to get the 1.6GhZ HyperTransport capabilities? Ok, just making sure... :)

Why dont you sell it again (maybe as a 939?) on ebay? Oooh how naughty i am.

You could get a dual cpu PCi express motherboard from somebody like Tyan and run it with one cpu. i think that is possible isnt it. Somebody please correct me if i am wrong.

The FX is a 64 bit CPU and is basically identical to the Opteron 246/248/250. But any FX CANNOT be run with another FX (or another opteron) in the same motherboard.

Got a hardware problem? - check your PSU... If it isn't that, then I don't know.

LOL (lmao) That would be a pretty naughty thing to do, and its almost Christmas time, I don't wanna be getting any coals under my tree. :) (maintaining a 100% feedback rating)

-Thank you by the way, you answered my one question that I was pondering. Whether you can pair up two FXs. It's a pitty, you can't. As far as the dual mobo with one CPU in....Do you think it'll work, does anyone have more info on that? But I fear only problems will arise from such a configuration..

-JJ

I've been looking for some deals on memory, and I think I'm gonna go with Corsair. Unless someone reccomends something better. It's actually goona be:

CORSAIR XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series, (Twin Pack) 184 Pin 2GB(1GBx2) ECC Registered DDR PC-3200 (Brand NEW)

That should get me going for a while. As of right now (with 19 hrs to go) it is currently priced at $380. I'm not gonna bid tho since I'm a little low on funds right now. I'm sure its gonna go up in price a little more by the time its finished, but I don't suspect that it will by a lot. This retails at around $750 and more elsewhere, so thats not too shabby. Now I know the latency of the 1GB DIMM is not as good as on a 512MB could be, but I wanna leave room for expansion ny not using up the other two slots . (As opposed to getting the same amount in 512MB DIMMs) Anyway, let me know what you think of my descision. (I'm also looking at OCZ s)

nice link to a mobo that wont work...

You can run DUAL 940 FX chips

You need registired RAM with the 940 so this a i bit of a cost to have added. You shouldnt find it too bad, check out tomshardwareguide.com for info on the chip and a general search for clocking rates.

Its always the same, Think its great, But like most things, they all have a nice catch.

MSI make some nice board and withthe chip being a fairly old chip, the asus offering should be to bad, but try not to get old stock (lower rev #) and you should be fine, Asus can often limit the clocking ability on there board, so check out the manuals for info before committing.
