Save this data below in a notepad.Pls rename the file to 'Write on USB.reg' and run it, to remove the write protect on USB.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies]
"WriteProtect"=dword:00000000

Thanks,
Asha

Hi! All Posters

Many of the suggestions are valid, but when a particular poster has success with reply that solves his problem. they do not get back to thank the for the reply and we don't know if they had success or not.

Asha K gave a suggestion which in many cases would solve the problem
There are thousands of USB pen drives advertised on eBay and other sites which are of poor quality, and even badged with names that are fictitous, and some of which are already unreliable.

Having said that , I recently found that many of my friends/clients, had a probem with a multiple extionsion plugged into a pc usb port. But when they disconnected the extension and plugged direct to the Pc the pen drive worked perfectly.

Another thing often overlooked is that before you remove a pen drive after use, you go to your task bar, right click on the pendrive icon (or drive letter) and access the remove drive safely, if you dont this can in many cases cause loss of data and in some cases corrupt the drive.

I would also like to say that when reading a post, that the person answering, looks at all the posts that were suggested previously, as some of them are the same answer/question that has already been answered.

Hope this is helpful

Kind Regards

My model is Apacer Handy Steno HT 202 and I have had the same problem. I contacted Apacer's support and they replied me with the link to download the lformat program (You can find it at their website - Apacer.com). If you need more info in my case, you can visit my blog - http://m3rlinez.blogspot.com/2007/01/just-rescued-my-write-pro...d-usb.html

Hope this helps.

That completely did the trick. The link was not correct but the files are still onsite. Go to the Apacer_dot_com website and search for the HT203 Handy Steno Repair Tool.

I tried the registry hack, no luck
I tried to use a linux box and a macbook to format, no luck.

This program took about 5 seconds to reformat the drive and now it works perfect.

Thanks!!!

PS: This was a Patriot xporter 2 gig drive

If that doesn't work (it didn't for me) try the following. 100% successful here:

- Start > Run > type ‘regedit’ then hit 'OK'.

- Browse to the following key:

My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies

- Double click on the string ‘WriteProtect’ and change the ‘Value Data’ box to ‘0’

- You may also need to do this for the strings in any folders called ‘ControlSet***’ e.g.

My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\StorageDevicePolicies

My Mr FlashU172 has no switch. I could not format it with XP but this worked:

1. copied the contents to my desktop (or wherever)
2. checked in My Computer to verify the drive letter of the flash drive (in my case E:)
3. Start - Run - typed cmd
4. at the prompt, typed format e: (careful!! Be sure the drive letter matches yours)

Good old DOS !

I hope this works for you.

What size drive is it? You may be able to download the drivers and tools here http://www.supermediastore.com/pendrive.html

XP SP2
USB 1GB

problems
-write protection error when trying to copy to it

No problem with
-deleting files
-formating

the problem is corrected temporarely by formating the drive which made me think its a virus
later i actually discovered the autorun.inf virus but after removal of the virus the problem persisted
actually it seems that the drive can not carry information beyond a certain limit (in may case about one fifth of its actual capacity) when it gives that error. I can never fill it

I think that drive failure is the most probable explanation as other USB drives do not produce that problem on the same machine

Hello Mina Daniel....AND ALL
With the greatest respect when posting, please give details of the Flash Drive, and the operating system you are using ie windows XP or earlier ones., and if it is a desk top or Laptop and it's FULL model number.
Also read all the previous posts which date back to 2004 which may be appropriate to your problem..Which has in you case already been covered
On early Flash drives the switch was very tiny on the edge side of the Flash Drive. On windows XP the flash drive when inserted into the USB port it is auto detected, on earlier ie Windows O/S prior to XP a Cd was supplied. This however was quite a long time ago.
Plug in the USB stick and go to my computer, and a list of drives should come up..
This usually shows one as a removable drive, To format right click on the drive, and a drop down will come up, and show one option Format Drive which is simple to do. But make sure it is the correct drive, and not a hard driveAs you do not give any details neccessary for diagnosis, I would suggest you review all previous posts, some of which are quite clear and concise.

Kind Regards
Happy Xmas
