Hey, im having the strangest problem here.
I have a cheap logitech optical mouse, and sometimes it moves.
When im in IE sometimes (yes, i use IE) the cursor hops to somewhere else on the screen. And it happened once while I was watching a movie.
And sometimes when unraring or burning (dont remember which), it shakes. The cursor vibrates, even tho the mouse is not moving.
But most of the time it behaves like mice are supposed to (eats cheese, chewes holes in walls, etc...)
I dont have a mousemat (i spilled beer on it). Is that the problem? I have a kindof polished desk.

Try turning the pointer speed down in the control pannel. Optical mice are way more sensitive than normall mice so if you've just upgraded that could be the problem.

David.

No, this mouse came with the computer when i bought it. Its fine normally, good speed and sensitivity. Only sometimes it decides to freak out. Its not a problem, just annoying to sit here reading or watching a movie, and suddenly the mouse moves...

Have you tried cleaning the bottom, when they get dirty they can jump a bit. You might want to check its connection to your PC aswell.

David.

I had this happen with 2 mice before I searched the net but all I could find was people with the same problem no answers, one guy said put the hardware acceleration down using DXDIAG it's the 1 in the sound TAB, I done it but it didn't work, I got a logitech MX510 and it works fine I just took it as my computer didn't like cheap mice.

Its well known (at least in my mind) that early (or crap) optical mice can skip over the sceen, even with a small movement. it could be dirty, or it could just be cheap.

If the problem persists, take a hammer to it and buy a new, quality one. Eg Logitech MX510 or newer.

i'd have to say the problem is the polished surface your using it on, does it do the same if you use it on some paper or card?

I agree with jake, Hamblitz and Brian. Put the mouse on a non-polished surface and clean the bottom.

Some of my optical mice do this. I hate it when it happens in games, just suddenly spin around a few times and end up looking way up or down. It used to happen like once an hour. It may have something to do with either odd packets, a weird surface, or a slightly dirty lens.

Wow... Old thread!
Well anyways, my optical mouse still moves by itself after all this time. I've cleaned it and I have a mousemat. It doesn't jump around any more, but sometimes the cursor creeps slowly upwards. Maybe a couple of times a week. It goes away when I move the mouse.
