IANAL, but isn't it deceptive advertising if they first sell the "HD-DVD" and tell you later that "by the way, we own your box if ever want to actually view the movie"?

Yeah, well, I look at it this way, all of the added exposure due to the Slashdot posting and the replies here are definitely worth the $19.99 I paid for the boxed set. Look at it as my contribution to educating our readers about what DRM brings to the table, if I steered a few people away from buying this boxed set, and steer clear of anything that rieks of DRM with their future purchases, than I accomplished what I set out to do. Obviously I also mailed the producer of the DVD and the manufacturer of the DRM solution featured on it, but they never bothered to reply.
