I downloaded a trial version of CloneDVD before christmas and tried it once and was impressed with it. However, i have been away from my PC (on hols) for the last 2 wks and the trial is a 14day one. Therefore my trial has expired an i have not been able to assess all the functions to see if it is worth purchasing.

I have uninstalled it and then reinstalled it to see if i could get another trial, but it just keeps coming up saying my 14day trial is over.

I have removed all of the related entries in the Registry and have also searched the HD for anything related to DVDclone and removed it, and yet it keeps saying the same thing when ever i try to reinstall and run it.

Therefore im stumped :(

Anyone know how i can get round this and have another 14 days to check it out?? or can you suggest a good alternative that allows me to copy my DVDs to the HDD?

any help appreciated.

regards

adam

Hello Adam

Re Clone DVD.
Try this. COMPLETLY UNINSTALL the Clone program as you previously did.
Now carefully proceed as follows to uninstall the rest of it.. Go to Start, Run, type in regedit.
When you are in the registry, make sure just the 5 HKEY's etc: on the left are showing and not expanded.
Go to File on top menu bar, and on the drop down open Find. enter CloneDVD and say ok.
Then a highlighted file of CloneDVD should show up. Press Delete, then ok, then F3, and it will search again.
Each time you find one, make sure it is a clone one.. repeat Delete ok F3, until it states finished searching the registery. THEN open find again and type in ...elaborate bytes..and search again using Delete, OK. F3 until it finishes searching the registery. IF YOU follow these instructions to the letter You should be able to get another 14 days.( as you probably know most uninstall programs always leave traces behind in the registery)

Jay ...Yes I also have that key, but I do not give them out on HWA :-)) Happy New Year

Well I see that Vic answered your question before me...lol

Elaborate Bytes is the company that makes CloneDvD. Thats why he said to look in your registry for it too.
Also after youve done that you can boot into safe mode and install it... worked for me anyway.

Hello Adam

Elaborate bytes is the name of the server of the company that downloads Clone.

If there is no reference to it in the Registery , just go and download it again & continue to re install and see how it goes, It is important to get the old 14 day completely off, as it will tell (heuristically) Elaborite Bytes you have traces of it still on if the registery if it is not cleaned up properly , In Germany and Switzerland they call the site ELBY.

Bye for now
Take Care

I have removed all traces of cloneDVD and elaborate bytes, but decided to search for ELBY (suggested by victor) and it found the following registry entry.

IS it safe to delete or is it a critical file?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\CriticalDeviceDatabase\root#elbyvcd

there are other ones aswell, such as

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY_ELBYCDIO

Try reinstalling it with that registry key left intact to start.

I pm'd you and you never replied back.

It would have worked for you but oh well. Guess you don't want my help. Fine with me.

BTW - It has nothing to do with the registry key. All you need do is replace a thing or two in the programs directory.

Good Luck :)

Hello Adam,
You should have done exactly as I suggested and removed all traces of Clone and Elaborate Bytes and ELBY and anything related to it. Both those keys were ok to delete, however if you have reinstalled and ignored my advice. There is only two things to do. (1) go through the procedure again , uninstall, & (2) and then regedit and remove all the highlighted keys....If at anytime you cannot fully read all the key on the right hand panel...just stroking the mouse over it slowly will show all the hidden detail on the extreme RHSide

I have done this many times in past, with many time expiry programs, and it worked every time....but any trace of the program left in the registery will not allow you to reinstall again.

I have the key for my paid official version but it registerd to me, and I am reluctant to give it away on HWA as it also contravenes HWA fair user policy.

With respect....I trust you can get someone else to assist you
Best Wishes

Thanks victor

when i search for the ELBY keys, it finds a lot of them and some of them are in (what seems to me) important areas.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\CriticalDeviceDatabase\root#elbyvcd
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\DeviceClasses\{53f56308-b6bf-11d0-94f2-00a0c91efb8b}\##?#SCSI#CdRom&Ven_ELBY&Prod_DVD-ROM&Rev_1.0#1&2afd7d61&0&000#{53f56308-b6bf-11d0-94f2-00a0c91efb8b}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY_ELBYCDIO
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\SCSI\CdRom&Ven_ELBY&Prod_DVD-ROM&Rev_1.0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\ElbyVCD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Eventlog\System\ElbyVCD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\CriticalDeviceDatabase\root#elbyvcd
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Enum\Root\LEGACY_ELBYCDIO

etc

are you sure they are safe to delete (hence why i wanted to back up the registry beforehand)

thanks

adam

Hi Adam
By all means back up the registery,
Now you see why so many unistall programs bog up a computer, leaving loads of uneccessary keys behind.

I'm having the same issue only its what 3 years after this thread originated, so hopefully someone is still reading these.
I tried all the things you all suggested here. By the way, there were also entries for SlySoft and AnyDVD. I got rid of all except one registry entry for ELBY which is the folder called LEGACY_ELBYCDIO and all of its contents. Every time I try to get rid of it I get an error(s) "Cannot delete LEGACY_ELBYCDIO: Error while deleting key." This is for any :folder: I try to delete. If I try to delete the individual files inside the folders it says "Unable to delete all specified values."
Can I modify the entries in some way to make them unreadable to whatever part of the trial software that looks for them?
I know this is the folder I need to get rid of, because I tried reinstalling clonedvd after deleting EVERYTHING else that came up under ELBY, CloneDVD, SlySoft, Elaborate bytes and AnyDVD, and still get the trial version expiration notice...

I wonder how HWA even allowed such a thread... This is pure pirating... doesn't anybody realize it? Removing trial means making the program work forever (pretty much) thus voiding the need to purchase the product! If you like the product, you should buy it. I doubt that HWA will help you bypass the security measures written by slysoft and using their soft illegally.

If you read the original message that began this thread, it was posted because the user did not have a chance to use the trial and decide whether or not he liked it enough to spend $70 on it. As I stated, I am having the same problem. Try again.

MD, Melissa,
You both have points here.
The issue is that the proceedure for extending the 14 day period once, does work indefinately, if you are willing to do it every 14 days or so. MD, it doesn't give you an infinate timeout, just a new 14 day window, though this could be utilized to use the SW for an indefinate timeframe.
So the proceedures could be seen as supporting piracy.
The alternative is to only install trialware when you know you'll have the time to properly utilize it, or to contact the SW provider to beg for permission for an extended trial period (though unlikely for a $70 product, I've actually used this for $8400 products).

Additionally, some of the functionality in some of the early DVD ripping SW has been removed from more recent products due to the copywrite infringement issues raised by them (see the redacted stream on a popular t-shirt), so trying to re-initiate SW that is now not as capable due to legal concerns does come under the lable of being piracy enabling SW, if not SW piracy.

Gerritt said:

Actually, it's not copyright infringement issues that resulted in removing some ripping software functionality. Simply providing a means to copy something is not illegal. "Fair-use" still allows copying of any copyrighted material under certain conditions.

What the ripping software did that was illegal was that they provided a method to bypass the anti-copying technology. That was made illegal by the DMCA (written almost entirely by industry lobbyists).

However **IA continually tries to confuse the issues because they want people to believe copying material is inherently illegal under any and all conditions.

By continually eroding and blurring the rights people have under "fair use", **IA eventually plans to achieve its likely ultimate goal of pay-per-view content, while having the taxpayers absorb almost the entire cost of enforcement.

edit to add-
Info on what seems to be a new **IA goal (being paid even if people don't download anything) Note that this scheme also relies on taxpayer funded government enforcement.
