I have just bought a second hand Canoscan 2700F film scanner using a SCSI connection. My laptop has an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ processor and runs Windows XP Pro. I have installed on my laptop an Adaptec 1640D SlimSCSI PCMCIA/SCSI adaptor. I am logged on as a Administrator. I live in the UK and require English (UK) if possible.

I have downloaded the latest driver file from Canon called s2305enx.exe (4050kB long), unzipped it to give three subdirectories call Disk1, Disk2 an Disk3.

The "Control Panel/Hardware/Device Manager" tells me that the Adaptec SCSI device is "working correctly". When I connect the scanner to the Adaptec SCSI card and then power it up I am told that "New hardware, called Canon IX-27015C SCSI Scanner Device, has been found". As instructed I select "Install from a list or specified location". I then select "Include this location in the search" and then browse to the directory containing Disk1, Disk2 an Disk3. But I can go no further as the "OK" is greyed out.

What am I doing incorrectly.

PLEASE HELP.

Many thanks

I asked the same question on another Forum and got a lot of help. Its an excellent Forum.

It appears that with XP Pro ASPI drivers must be loaded before it can be set up. Now it works OK even though XP occassionally tells me that it is "new hardware".

>> Canoscan 2700F Film Scanner Drivers under XP and VISTA
Full instructions for XP are on the Canon web site etc - including the manual - such as that is - and the correct twain driver. The ASPI software is on Adaptec's site, with an alleged update on FrogASPI.com that appeared to do nothing for me.

However, you've been done, because everybody says that the scanner will not work for Vista - and XP won't last forever. I've seen bastards sellling this model for £150 - without any software, cable, or board, or telling prospective customers about the Vista issue that no-one but me seems to have cracked yet. These cost £550 new.

Despite this, I have a solution that actually works - but involves acquiring a new supported SCSI to USB or FireWire adaptor or new PCI board and the use of VueScan. You will find that the 1460 card functions under Vista for disks - but not scanners. I found that an old Belkin SCSI adaptor worked, when I pinched the INF file from Windows 2000.

These changes are need for Vista because 1) adaptec have decided to discontinue support for the AVA-1505 board that was supplied by Canon with the scanner (actually a 1520 clone), and also for the 1460 series of PCMCIA cards that I used to use. 2) Adaptec have withdrawn support for the ASPI layer, and projected solutions via Frog and Nero appear not to work. 3) the driver that you should be using isn't the one that you named. For XP, it's the CanoCraft 3.6.6 from the Canon website. This ia a twain driver and requires the ASPI layer- as does SilverFast, so neither work for Vista now.

Bugger the marketing scum at Microsoft that inflict all these unnecessary changes on us just to thieve more of our money!!!!

Use VueScan Pro and the FS2700 setting; it's obtainable from The Pirate Bay, or you can pay $40 for the standard version or get ripped off twice that amount for the 'Professional' version that includes profiling and some somewhat pointless camera RAW file importation.

If you care to mail me at John I Goodwin at Yahoo dot co dot uk, I have all the modules and my three-page write-up on XP and Vista usage. The XP write up is just an expansion upon other somewhat scant info elsewhere. You can use the VueScan under XP as well of course. It seems to be a very useful programme, but the instructions are absolute crap, especially if you want "RAW" output; nothing there apart from the bleeding obvious is explained!!! I've just spent £70 trying to acquire some useful books, and got ripped off about $60 just in postage charges (plus tax on top) for the two RATOC adaptors that I bought to develop my solution; these cost about $100 each. The scanner now mounts under USB and FireWire as a largely plug and play device - but of course is still only 24-bit, so doesn't handle TIFF-EP 48-bit or supposed higher formats. You can pass the output directly to an editor, but VueSan won't run from within another application.
