HI Clay, i don't have a SATA optical drive, i am using a Pioneer multiburner reg. old IDE, so i only have 1 seagate hd plugged into SATA master 1 and 1 seagate hd plugged into SATA master 2.....i don't want to be too quick to think i fried something cuz i am not sure i plugged the firewire into the usb or the other way around, i frankly am too tired to remember what i did with this thing a week ago....lol.....maybe it is something else...but that is sure odd to see 2 hard drives looking like usb thingies in the little system tray icon....

i cannot begin to imagine how anyone gets the audio wires hooked up, i have not even begun to try that, with my cooler master case the front panel wires are teeny individual things, not a plug style.... i will not begin to mess with the audio for awhile i am sure....so i cannot be of any help there...anyway i am about 99% on getting the audigy 2 'Value" card for $70 from Fry's anyway, so hopefully i won't have to mess with the onboard audio wiring.....i just don't wanna keep working on this if i have somehowe fried the usb ports and i am gonna have to RMA the board...........i will keep piddling with it for a couple of days, i am gonna go buy a usb pci card and plug it in and see if usb works through the pci slot, if it does and the usb onboard is broken i just may keep the board and use the pci usb ( assuming that works )....the hard drives showing as usb in my system tray really really BUGS me though....dangit

1006 Final

Neither of these BIOSes fix the 1T overclocking issue yet, perhaps we'll get a final by the end of the week. Taiwan FTP for those that want them.

ok mad scientist lol...here are some more settings i have re: the usb ports being 'dead'

in devide manager this is what shows:
'std. enhanced PCI to USB host controller
'std. open HCD Host Controller'
USB root hub

this also shows:
IDE ATA/ATAPI controller v. 2.7
NVIDIA ck804 ADMA controller 2.7
NVIDIA ck804 Parallel ATA controller 2.7

disk drives ( again under device manager ) shows:
Location 0 Secondary ATA channel
Location 0 Primary ATA channel

In bios i have:
P & P "enabled"
Resources "auto"

Extended IDE drive "auto"
Acess Mode "auto"

Todd Norway,
I would keep the 6800GT XFX as it is still faster overall than two 6600GT's in SLI mode
Wait for the prices to come down and then get a new 6800GT XFX in a few months.

Thanks for the reply's on keeping my 6800GT vs going for TWO 6600GT's.
My concern is by the time I'm able to buy a 6800GT it won't be the same version of the XFX card and I'll be screwed anyway. How can one gaurantee to get the same card? Before I bought my card I even called the XFX tech support on the issue and they said people WHERE having problems because they waited 6 months before by thing there 2nd card.
Hard choice it is.......

I'm still confused about the audio on this board. When I installed the NVidia chipset drivers (6.39) it put an audio driver & software icon in my tray.. mixer controls & all that. However, the ASUS manual says this is Realtek audio and I should install the Realtek drivers and software from their CD. Which is it, Nvidia or Realtek? If I install the Realtek software should I uninstall the NVidia audio first? I'm confused..

SLI Video Corruption Issue:
I have 2 Asus EN6800 that I am attempting to run in SLI mode. When I run Half Life 2 ( and other games as well), I get strange video corruption. I have seen other posts reflecting similar problems, but no consensus on a solution. The corruption is a sort of wavy, blurry mess, but is not exactly like tearing you see when your video card is overheating. The cards run fine in non-SLI mode.

I had an issue like that when I first put all my things together, found out it was my refresh rate that was doing it, I lowered it and it took it right out. Was a wavy type picture in any game/3d app I used.

Wow I'm loving this motherboard...... yeah right.

So I've narrowed my BSOD (blue screen of death) problem down to the nvidia raid. When I have raid enabled random BSOD. When I don't smooth sailing, worked fine until I "upgraded" to 6.39 drivers. Anyone else having this prob?? I might switch RAID over to Silicon Image controller but I was getting 96Mbps in sandra soft :( Don't think the other controller can do that.

The BSOD error is DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, and no changing the boot thingy to execute didn't work.

I know its not my PSU.

With the new BIOS I can get my memory timings to 2-2-2-5-T1 by the way :)

Dan,
I tried that, but I'm not sure what I lowered it to. How low did you set the refresh rate to?

thanks

Paul,

The CD I was referring to is the one that ships with the mobo.. it has the Realtek drivers on it. In any case, does this mean you have both the Nvidia audio and Realtek audio drivers & software installed? As for video, yes you should install video drivers. The NVidia chipset drivers do not contain video drivers. You can install NVidia's forceware or use the ones provided by your video card manufacturer.

Hi Peter, i am SOOOO confused lol....i don't think i have the nvidia audio drivers installed all i think i have done is install the updated realtek 850 codec from the asus website ( well, i know i have done that ) i am just not sure i ever loaded an nvida audio drivers......jeez i gotta check somehow but i don't think so....i did install nTune, Ai booster, the the 3 nvidia chipset files on that asus mobo disc....maybe you mean that nvidia has audio codecs on that disc? hmmm not sure....sorry to be of no help but i am really struggling...actually i cannot believe the darn computer is up and runnning right now lol...of course i have not played any games....i just plugged an old set of speakers into the back of the board and they did not work ( they work in my current old computer )....i am jjust going to spend the $70 for an audigy 2 and forget about it...this board is costing me a fortune in time....

i will try and install the MSI vga drivers shortly.....now if i could figure out my usb ports issue...i see via that 3d disc that comes the MSI graphics card, it lets' you access some settings i had not seen before, and did not see in the 'device manager' and it shows the microsoft minihub ( or something like that ) "not enabled" and i had not seen that in the mobo bios settings or in the windows device manager either....i gotta find that maybe that is the cause of my usb probs....hmmmm work work work

The Nvidia driver is a unified driver meaning it contains the Nvidia sound driver by default.

The A8N-SLI has the Realtek sound chip so you MUST install the realtek driver!

BTW I like the onboard sound better than the SB Audigy 2 I had installed as the realtek give me less problems while gaming :)

NV is the hardware, there are NV drivers for the hardware with audio codec interface, then there are CODECS Realtek ALC850 with Single AC97, 8 channel capabilities.

Dear Paul Bennett,

There are about 25 ways to check the USB out, but before I show you how, we need to isolate settings etc. One example of my ways to check, is to use a voltmeter to test the USB power and ground (tricky), there may be power there but the ground might be out and vice versa. I would like to try a couple of things first. Although I gave you basic instructions in the PM, I had to make sure those settings were right, and in no way was any kind of noob thought towards your computer abilities.

I do remember saying that we had other things to try. So if you still want to go through this in a step by step fashion, let me know in a PM.

i have a MSI NX 6600 GT and should i load those video drivers on top of the nVidia chipset drivers i already loaded...? any opionins on this?

>>>No.

Clay

P.S. Paul Bennett, fyi, I have the same issues with the "remove hardware safely" icon using my 2 SATA seagate hdds. I haven't figured that one out yet. Someone also discussed that issue towards the end of page 28 but I didn't have time to check and see if that was the case. One thing though I don't have a SATA optical drive so this might just be a different issue. Personally I don't really care so I am not going to look into it anytime soon.

>>>The NvRaid and Sil drivers utilize the USB system to a certain degree (host controller/USB compatible) if you were to install USB drives, internally or externally, the drives would utilize the controller to convey data etc. to the system in concert with the drives you have now. It's quite normal to have the Safely Remove Hardware Icon in the tray when connected to the SATA ports.(A basic description)

[quote] in devide manager this is what shows:
'std. enhanced PCI to USB host controller
'std. open HCD Host Controller'
USB root hub [/quote}
>>>It appears your USB is working!

Great FAQ guys!

I'm setting up a new system as soon as my CPU gets here, and the experimental side of my brain is thinking of trying to set the whole thing up from a Windows XP-64 RC2 cd instead of regular XP.

Has anyone tried this yet? Or does anyone have any comments about what a colossal mistake this may turn out to be?

Also, I've seen several people mention problems with Maxtors in a RAID setup. As long as I'm not doing RAID, should I be okay with this drive? Or would it be better to ditch it and go with another brand?

Thanks,
Masked
