Remove devices one by one until the error clears. Even down to one stick of RAM and swapping if you still get the error.
Do you have any errors in your device manager?

is there a battery on the board?
>>>Yes, but I seriously doubt this is your problem.

Remove the board from your tower (bench test) and run CPU, Graphics, and Memory to see if it gets you into the BIOS.

>>>Very possible, just dismantle and check as per this post.

So it appears to me the 6.53 nvidia nforce4 standalone chipset drivers have included audio drivers. do these replace the realtek '97 drivers? If I check the Add/Remove Programs list the realtek '97 audio drivers are still there. Could this cause a conflict? Should I uninstall the nvidia audio part of the package and reinstall the lastest realtek (5750)? I haven't experienced any audio problems, just wondering.

Personally I wouldn't do anything if it's working right now.

Mike,

Tried the CD route still no luck just hangs at the same point :( looks like time to try the next 10 options methinks...

I gotta get to the bottom of this quickly one way or another because I ordered it through work and it was sitting idle for a week or two so I don't want to be out of time for an RMA (supplier was dabs.com)

Cheers,

Gerrard

Mike,

My post on page 101 from 04/01 at 2:16am was a repeat post of my post on page 95 032805 7:00pm.

The only answer I received was from Alkemyst Darkened. He just said that he didn't have problems with the Zalman northbridge heatsink mod. Then said his biggest concern is that this is not the right board for my intentions.

The board being the best for my situation is arguable. Many things I won't use, but I wanted a high performance 939 board that I could use for awhile. I feel I made a good choice. Regaurdless of that debate, it is the board I will be using for sometime. I would like to get it running solid.

Please see my post on page 101 as I don't want to waste anymore space with the same info.

Thank you,

Tim

has anyone had a problem with the sound dying ? Currently the only noise I hear from my PC is the system speaker beeping. Have the latest Nvidia drivers and onboard sound is enabled in the BIOS but only silence from headphoones and or speakers.

>> Re: Asus A8N-SLI FAQ
Been off on other things, but now back trying to finish up my computer. When I last wrote, I was having trouble getting the system to recognize the two 300GB data drives mounted on the Sil3114 controller position. Since the system doesn't see them I can't format or use them. They are to be independent drives, not actually in a RAID set.

During each XP reinstall I did insert the Sil drivers disk when prompted, but I have no evidence that the controller driver was actually installed. In Device Management, I see the nVidia controller listed under SCSI and RAID controllers, and it is performing fine. The Sil3114 controller is not listed in this section.

Lower down the Device Management listing, I see a section called Other Devices, with four subentries:
Other Devices (has yellow question mark)
__PCI Bridge Device (has yellow question mark)
__PCI Memory Controller (has yellow question mark)
__RAID Controller (has yellow question mark)
__SM Bus Controller (has yellow question mark)

Does the Raid Controller listed here refer to the Sil3114 controller? If it is, the yellow question mark says it is doing me no good. Or where should I see the listing of the Sil RAID controller?

From what I have read in the User Manuals and in this forum, it is my understanding to use the drives on this controller, it must be enabled in BIOS, drivers must be installed, and the disks must not be assigned to a RAID set if they are to be recognized as independent drives.

Is this understanding correct, or have I missed something?

Since the driver is not obviously listed (if it is listed elsewhere, I have not seen it), is there any way to install the driver besides doing a complete XP install and hope the next time the drivers will actually get installed? So far I have made three XP installs for this purpose to no avail. I have asked XP to scan the system several times for other devices, but it reports no new devices.

Any pointers to get these disks working will certainly be appreciated, as were replies to my previous queries. I do want to do as much of this myself, but this week I have just been beating my head against the wall.

***Mike***

Hello dude,
do you know when you reset the machine and, before booting up, you hear the sound of optical devices restarting, then the POST screen appears and the machine boots up to Windows?
Well, that's the part when the mainboard boots twice, because I can hear the optical devices restarting twice.
After that, the boot process continues normally.
Best regards.

Half measures avail us nothing.

Get a better PSU before you fire-up the next one, you're pushing your luck with an 18 AMP power supply, and remember, this is not RMS and there is an effeciency rating which lowers this number even more.

Personally I wouldn't mess with the northbridge fan/heatsink combo, if passive was ok, would ASUS not have put one on there? There are reasons why they used a fan/heatsink combo. If anything I trust watercooling over both air and passive as I see the numbers on my system.

Can you perform this little test? Hold the reset button down for a solid 10 seconds and see if it does the same thing.
Make sure you have no CD/DVD in the drive.

To Tim Acheson:

I've heard anecdotal evidence of people replacing their chipset fan/heatsink with passive cooling on this board, but most are not successful. If you've taken extraordinary measures to provide airflow through your case it might work. Active cooling works and it seems the best choices are the stock combo or water cooling.

To D C:

It looks like your SiI controller's window drivers aren't installed. Did you install the drivers that came on the CD for the MB? I remember those drivers cleared up a bunch of 'yellow questionmark' devices for me, but don't recall exactly which ones anymore. If you double click on one of the entries it should tell you why its not working and give you an opportunity to correct it.

The prompt for drivers during the beginning of the XP install is so that you can load RAID drivers and have a RAID array appear as a single entity rather than the individual drives. I have drives hanging off both my SATA controllers that aren't in a raid. I didn't supply any drivers to the XP install.

During each XP reinstall I did insert the Sil drivers disk when prompted, but I have no evidence that the controller driver was actually installed.
>>>Did you manually install the Sil SATA controller at the S prompt?
In Device Management, I see the nVidia controller listed under SCSI and RAID controllers, and it is performing fine. The Sil3114 controller is not listed in this section.
>>>It should be, if you're using Sil standard or RAID.

Lower down the Device Management listing, I see a section called Other Devices, with four subentries:
Other Devices (has yellow question mark)
__PCI Bridge Device (has yellow question mark)
__PCI Memory Controller (has yellow question mark)
__RAID Controller (has yellow question mark)
__SM Bus Controller (has yellow question mark)

Does the Raid Controller listed here refer to the Sil3114 controller?
>>>Yes. You need to manually point to the drivers on the motherboard cd if the windows wizard doesn't find the drivers automatically. Clear the exclamations!

If it is, the yellow question mark says it is doing me no good. Or where should I see the listing of the Sil RAID controller?
>>>under SCSI and RAID controllers

From what I have read in the User Manuals and in this forum, it is my understanding to use the drives on this controller, it must be enabled in BIOS
>>>Yes for standard SATA and RAID, it must be enabled. (from what I heard anyway)

, drivers must be installed, and the disks must not be assigned to a RAID set if they are to be recognized as independent drives.
Is this understanding correct, or have I missed something?
>>>No RAID drivers are needed during the install if you are not running RAID, just the Sil SATA controller.

Since the driver is not obviously listed (if it is listed elsewhere, I have not seen it), is there any way to install the driver besides doing a complete XP install and hope the next time the drivers will actually get installed?
>>>Yes, manually point the windows wizard to the Sil driver folder on your motherboard cd, E:\Drivers\Sil3114\Disk or click on the installer here E:\Drivers\Sil3114\RAID_Driver.

So far I have made three XP installs for this purpose to no avail. I have asked XP to scan the system several times for other devices, but it reports no new devices.
>>>Stop reinstalling, this is not going to solve your problem.

PS - I need my coffee to early yet.
Correct me if i'm wrong here folks! I haven't had my drives on the SIL for over 2 months, I sold all 8 of them. I didn't have the opportunity to fully test the Sil out. I guess my point here is that it doesn't matter if the RAID drivers are in or not, it will still work as single drives with them installed.

Mike :)

Still no sound. This is a quandry. Checked all wiring-it's good. removed the realtek drivers and reinstalled the Nvidia drivers (didn't work w/ realtek either, possible conflict w/ Nividia?). Device manger shows the Nividia drivers but deosn't show the '97 device? Should it? There is no sound at all from headphones and or speakers yet all consoles are functioning. I am at a loss here. Checked that no "mute" is on. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Next step would be to steal soundblaster off fiance's PC and install on mine (she has onboard sound and just surfs the web no music etc., wouldn't even notice).

Only thing that I have seen is that under Device manager, Sound, video and game controllers there is an item labeled Media Control Devices. Several drivers listed and all active but the device itself is listed as loccation unknown. Could this be my problem and what the heck is it anyways. Going to Msoft to research.
