I'm going to order an A8N-SLI Deluxe soon and will get a CPU with the new Venice core, which you have to flash the BIOS for this to work properly. Is it possible to flash the BIOS with the Venice CPU in already or do I need to get another 939 based chip and use it to flash the BIOS then put the Venice chip in?

I am having trouble creating an image using ghost. I have used the 'Motto Hairu' USB Drivers and works great for external USB Mass Storage Devices on my other computers. However it does not find my external USB devices with A8N-SLI.

I was finally able to get ghost to work ... waiting about 2 minutes for it to load. Research on other forums says it does not like SATA and have to use the -fni switch. Could back up to an IDE drive, but I want to back up to my external usb device.

Any other methods.?

>> Chipset fan replacement
Hi guys

It seems my chipset fan is dodgy, cranks out a lot of noise. Stopping it with my fingers, giving it a good tap, then letting it spin up will fix it (after many retries). Seems to me that the bearing is faulty.
Anyway, the qeustion is what should i replace the fan with? Its noisy enough even when working so i might as well get rid of it. I was thinking I'd need a CFM value of the stock fan, that way I can just buy a 12v fan that pushes the same/more air through.

My hope was a 6cfm 40mm silenx fan (very quiet) but the cfm values for silenx tend to be lower. I've seen a panaflo that did 5.9 though, so maybe I'm ok with the silenx?

BTW theres no room for any bigger than a 40mm fan. I had considered seating a larger fan further back and blowing air onto the motherboard chipset, but my guess is this wouldnt be a good idea, correct?

PS: Sander Sassen / Vitaliy Fuks : Is there any way to add a search function to apply to a particular forum? Not being able to search and limit to this thread is terrible... It's a fantastic thread but if people could find the info a lot more easily I bet you it'd be more useful and shorter!

You can add Surepower 500watt BTX / ATX Smart Cable Power Supply as a tested Power Supply. I bought this supply when it was onsale last week and it works like a charm.

Options I've seen:

Stock HS with a papst, silenx or other 40 mm fan.
Zalman nb47 without a fan or nb32 with a fan

I've got a Arctic Cooling NV5 on my video card, so I only have ~17mm of height to work with, so I'm using a Vantec Iceberq cooler (a http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835110103). I can hear a slight whine if I turn off my case fans, but it's not noticeable at all with regular use. NOTE: Some people have killed their second IDE channel when replacing the stock HS -- I've not, but be careful.

> BTW theres no room for any bigger than a 40mm fan. I had considered seating a larger fan further back and > blowing air onto the motherboard chipset, but my guess is this wouldnt be a good idea, correct?

I've seen that done with a Zalman nb 47 and a Zalman 123 fan.

> Is there any way to add a search function to apply to a particular forum?

I use google, "site:http://www.hardwareanalysis.com chipset fan"

Depending on your video card you might be able to use the Swiftech MCX159-R. I am using it and like the way it mounts. You don't have to remove the motherboard after initial instalation.

I used to OC to the hilt. I used to mod everything I could possible mod. Changing fans, water cooling, etc. I still do a little overclocking but the bottom line is 50% of the time I ended up having one issue or another caused by my own actions! Why and for what? A few more FPS? Braggin' rights? Higher benchmarks?
My ePenis syndrome has left me ever so slightly each year as I grow old and gray.
Buy new components each year to stay up to date, leave it near stock, and be a happy man :)

For those of you who have been pulling your hair out trying to get the network access manager to work, suffering from BSOD's, IRQ not less than equal, etc.

I ran accross some interesting information today on the Nvidia forums, actually it was a link to neoseeker.com and a review of an nforce4 board from mid april.

"When comparing processor usage relative to throughput, the nForce 4 definitely has the edge again. While the Marvell solution on the Gigabyte board has very respectable throughput, the processor usage is through the roof. For testing purposes here we are still using the 6.39 driver set which we noted had a problem with ActiveArmor and connection offloading. Last week we were finally able to get a hold of a driver build that has a working implementation of ActiveArmor. Processor usage on the VNF4 dropped down into the 26-28% range while keeping up with the throughput, a very impressive feat. While this is not quite the 20% that was quoted, this is still a significant drop. Special thanks to NVIDIA for their continued patience in working with us through this one. The driver set with the fixed ActiveArmor is not publically available yet but we have been assured that this will get rolled into the next driver update."

"When we did our reviews of the Gigabyte K8NXP-SLI board and DFI's LanParty UT nF4 Ultra-D boards we noticed unusually high processor usage when testing the integrated network card on the nForce 4 chipset. Perplexed we contacted NVIDIA about this issue and we have spent a couple weeks on trying to identify and resolve this issue with them and we finally have an answer now. It turns out that the IDE driver and the network driver are sharing the same interrupt and this was causing some issues with Active Armor - we have a couple work arounds from NVIDIA. Here's a copy/paste of the correspondence:

1- Remove the NVIDIA IDE driver and use the Microsoft IDE driver. Once that is done, ActiveArmor works again as intended. CPU utilization drops from about 40% to 20%.

2- Unplug the SATA drive and try different ports on the motherboard, keep enabling and disabling the IDE driver till you come to a state where the IDE driver and the network driver don't share the same interrupt... Once that is done, ActiveArmor works as intended.

NVIDIA is looking for a better solution right now and have both their BIOS and IDE teams working on it to find a permanent fix. This may be vendor specific BIOS problem as it does not show up on the NVIDIA reference solution but since we have a limited number of consumer boards on hand at the moment we cannot verify this. Big thanks to the guys over at NVIDIA as they were very persistent and have spent countless hours on the phone with us in trying to resolve this! "

FROM neoseeker.com
http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Reviews/vnf4ultra/index.html

basicly we will have to wait for a driver update that either bumps the interupts around so more friendly devices are shareing interupts or the drivers themselves are updated to play nice with each other.

this problem is a two way street you can have both network problems and data corruption problems on your sata drives plus sata devices that are resource hogs like some cd and dvd burners can have problems too.

There may also be some more subtle long term problems with data corruption on sata drives and even large files transfered on the network even without the firewall installed.

On the SLI-A8N Mobo, does anyone know a good replacement fan or northbridge heatsink for it? My video cards sometimes seem to be hitting the fan that's on it now. Sometimes the fan on the northbridge doesn't even spin when I turn on my pc. So any suggestions would be really appreciated! Thanks.

3dMark05 Quirks:
After installing my second XFX 6800Gt card and running 3dMark05 i got scores in the mid 5,000's w/ no O/Cing. This wasn't as high as I woulfd have liked to see but I could play HL2 w/ all the bells and whistles so I was happy. Last week I reloaded the Nvidia drivers but ran DriverCleaner before reloading. I also mounted a new cooler on one of the GT's and ran 3dMark05 again to burn in the Arctic5 and low and behold my 3dMark05 scores jumped to 8239 w/ no O/Cing and all the background stuff still running. Thjis week I scrubbed my RAID Drives, reformatted everything and did a fresh reload of XP-SP2 and all the drivers etc. w/ a new partitioning scheme. Ran 3dMark05 this morning to verify system stability and scored a 8629 w/ all the background stuff running and no O/Cing.

That's a pretty respectable score on a non-tweaked system (basically stock settings w/ virus protection and all other background programs running as well as connected to the internet) and shows that you have to go that extra litle bit before reloading drivers (GPU temps hadn't changed significantly in the above test).

Also, I didn't load up the Nvidia Firewall and Network Manager on the new system load as it was giving me some issues and I have a hardware firewall on my broadband router. Here is a question, Do I really need a software firewall running on the PC if I have a very good hardware firewall on the router? I don't think so but would be interested to hear someone with more knowledge re. this subject give their opinion.

Bottom line, run driver cleaner every now and again before reloading your drivers.

Super FAQ and very enlightening. Please forgive me if I'm asking a question already aired in this forum - I've been searching but thus far haven't seen the answer I'm looking for. I'm currently assembling components for a new system using the A8N-SLI Deluxe mainboard. Although I now use a RAID 0 array in my current system (using 2 IDE 120 Gb Western Digital hard drives) I'm curious about this mainboard having two RAID controllers. Would it be possible to run two RAID arrays concurrently? For example, run two Raptors (74 Gb flavor) in RAID 0 plus run two other SATA or IDE large capacity drives in RAID 1? Or would it be better to just run four Raptors in RAID 0? Just FYI, here's the other components I'm planning to use:

- AMD FX-55 CPU
- Corsair TwinX XMS 3200LLPRO DDR400 - 4 x 512 Mb
- BFG NVidia 6800 Ultra - 2 each in SLI
- Plextor PX-716A burner
- PC Power & Cooling Turbo Cool 510 SLI PSU
- Creative Audigy 2 ZS Pro
- Koolance Exos 2 liquid cooling on CPU and graphics cards
- Thermaltake Armor tower case

Greatly appreciate any assistance/insights. Semper Fidelis, Kerry

Kerry,

If you plan to use your 'old' disks I'd opt to put those two 120GB disks in RAID1 on the Silicon Image controller and a single, or two in RAID0, WD Raptor(s) on the NV raid controller. Install the OS on the Raptor(s) including all apps etc. and put your saved work, documents, movies, files, etc. on the RAID1 array.

Hi guys,

How do you run driver cleaner?

What is the best GFX driver @ present for best performance?
Is it still 66.93
Which version of BIOS is recommended?

Does anyone know the best manual overclock settings for the FX55 chip and 2 XFX 6800 GT's?

When I overclock using ntune I seem to get silver flashing blobs whilst running 3D Mark 05, is this likely to be down to System performance or the fact that my 19" TFT 8ms screen can't keep up?
Any comments welcome.

My system is:
Athlon 64 3500+
Corsair twinx1024-4400c25 1GB kit DDR550
2x WD Raptor in RAID0
XFX GeForce 6800 GT
Nec ND-3500a DVD+/-RW
LiteOn DVD ROM
Thermaltake XaserV V7000d case
Antec TrueControl 550 (similar to the TruePower but has a switch to tweat power output) PS
bios 1007, nvidia chipset drivers 6.53
Windows XP Pro SP2

When I first started up after assembling the system and setting the bios settings to the recommended values, the USB and firewire drivers would not start. The fix was to set the PnPOS value to no. This is repeatable and occurs with bios ver 1006 and 1007. With the value set to no the drivers not only start but Windows doesn't have any problem detecting and loading and unloading drivers for devices plugged into or out of the USB ports.

Anyone have any thoughts as to why this is happening and why it doesn't seem to be occuring with anyone else?
