Okay, next question: does the Asus bios-updater app work, or should I go with the old bootable-floppy standby?

Hi Merc!

Sorry, this might be a stupid question. lol

Do you mean the game standoffs? Or do you mean hexagon standoffs for the motherboard? etc.

PS - I still have lots to do for my online business, upgrades to my machine etc.. I will trickle in and out of the forum though.

>> Asus A8N-SLI - BLOWN BOARD or/and PSU??
Mike (SLI Scientist) and Merc thanks for your replies guys, they do help, even though they might be to no avail!

OK i tested the board with my old solarmax 300watt PSU and it powers up fine, although my screen is blank and the motherboard doesn't seem to post to bios (unless my graphics card is fryed!!!??? Ahhh)
So, it must be my PSU that has blown, but with my motherboard not posting to BIOS, do you thinks that's gone too, or perhaps my graphics card!? So many different combinations of putting you in the absolute sh-it in PC's these days!.

As with the stand-offs merc, yes I have the nine standard ones installed, but didn't have the right screws with the coolermaster case. Therefore I used my own, some fitted and some didn't, but the motherboard was secure. I don't know, I'm just lost for words and trying to get everything returned under warranty!

Hope anyone, anywhere can help me out with what to do next. Please GOD don't tell me I've blown my whole system...................

Cheers all

Greg

I can't read through 147 pages of posts. Could someone tell me, are all the problems that people are experiencing with the A8N-SLI Deluxe only when using two graphics cards in SLi mode? I want this board, but only want the SLi feature for future upgradeability. If I run the board with only one graphics card, will I still experience all these problems? Should I get a different board? Thank you.

>> Re: AC97 Audio device will not install
Well, I'm back and looking for more help. I've flashed my bios to 1008 (because the links to the 1010 and 1011 beta bioses on Asus' site are broken links!) and I still cannot install a driver for my "Multimedia Audio Controller" in device mangler. When I point to the 64-bit driver on the mobo CD or from Asus' site, I get the Windows "no driver here" message. I know that AC97 is enabled in the bios, and all my bios settings are set as described in the first post in this thread.

I'm really unsure what to try next. This is a brand new system, all I did was plug everything in, install WinXP-64, put in the mobo CD and installed the NVidia chipset driver. FWIW, there are also two other devices listed in devmangler without drivers: "Other PCI Bridge Device" and "Unknown device".

So, any advice would be welcome. Is there anything I might've forgotten to plug in on the mobo that might keep the audio from working? I have the audio cable from the DVD drive to the cd-audio port installed correctly, as per the manual. Any other drivers I should download and try other than the ones I got from Asus' site? They're labelled "Realtek AC'97 Driver V5.10.00.5646 for Windows 64bit XP/2003." Any other ideas? Thanks in advance.

Adam

>> Re: AC97 Audio device will not install
As a follow-up, is Asus' support site always this bad, or are they undergoing recent problems? Their whole site seems to be rife with broken links. When I connect to their FTP servers directly, I find that none of them have the most recent beta bios versions, and the European and Chinese ftp sites don't have any bioses at all. Is this a recent issue? Is it even worth the effort of opening a support ticket with them?

I'm still trying random things to solve my audio problems; I've found that the non-64-bit version of the AC97 audio installer will run, but doesn't install drivers for my multimedia audio device, and doesn't seem to have any effect on the problem. I've removed and re-added the NForce unified driver, no help there. I've removed the device thru Windows, disabled it in the bios, then re-enabled it, none of this is having any effect whatsoever. It seems like the 64-bit AC97 drivers on their site are either misnamed or the wrong version (which wouldn't be surprising, given all the broken links) or are just plain old bad. I guess the next step is to start unplugging random non-essential things from the board, like the game port and the USB headers and such, in the blind hope that I'll come across a solution, but I'm still holding out hope that someone here will have some ideas on how I might proceed. Please let me know if you can think of any silly mistakes I might have made, because this is a very vanilla system with nothing unusual about it, and it seems like no one else on the net is having similar problems, so I feel as if I must have made a mistake somewhere. Thanks again in advance.

>> Easy, cool and quiet fix for P.O.S. Asus chipset fan
If you want to get rid of that noisy, whining, pos chipset fan and don't want to go with a passive solution here is what I did and it seems to be a vast improvement. Get this Pabst 40mm fan: http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/40mmpapst.html remove the cover aand the stock fan but not the heatsink. (It's easy) . Get yourself some #4 by 5/8 inch long screws ( 3/4 will work with 2 #4 washers stacked under them if you can't find 5/8 screws) and attach the fan to the existing heatsink. The holes line up perfectly. This fan is very quiet (19 Dba), moves alot of air, and keeps my chipset 10 degrees C cooler. My video card next to it is also cooler. The fan is low profile and fits just fine with my stock 6800gt's. I believe that it would also work with dual slot cooling with little or no modification. I've been running the fan for 3 weeks to test it before posting but for those of you who know Papst fans don't fail. The fan comes with a 4-pin molex so if you want to connect it to the motherboard you'll have to get a 3-pin converter. I just plugged it into the loop with all my case fans which are on a controller when I need to be really quiet. Hope this helps.

>> Re: Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe FAQ
My mobo (non deluxe version) without any overclock is performing very well: no BSOD, no crash.

Only one issue: sometimes, randomly, XP seems to be unable to see my 6600GT:

Sometimes i can boot, but they use drivers for a standard VGA, and under the video card identification i ge "unknow card" "unknow chip" etc. etc.

Sometimes they dont boot at all, jumping into sleep mode.

I boot in temporary mode, i delete the video driver, i reboot and reinstall the drivers and all came back again with no problems.

This happens one each 2 weeks, with no clear reason, and i cant understand if is XP related, video driver related, BIOS related.

Some help/hints or even similar experience?

Andrea

>> Re: Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe FAQ
Hello,

I have a problem with my PC setup, I think it may have something to do with the A8N-SLI, but I am not sure.
Here are my specs,

Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
AMD Athlon 64 3200 Socket 939
Kingston 2 x 512MB PC3200 RAM
Single Video Card - ATI Radeon X700 DDR3
DVD-RW Pioneer 16x
CD-RW 52x
Super Flower 500w / 230v PSU
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2

I have setup the PC without any problems, however upon boot the Radeon does not give a signal and the monitor does not turn on. I have checked my jumper settings numerous times and made sure the IDE cables are configured properly. The following occurs when I power on the PC.

- The CD-RW makes a ticking noise, and will not open.
- The HDD LED is constantly on and does not flicker.
- No display.
- No system (beep) sounds upon boot.

I have configured the mobo to use single card and not SLI. I cant see anything I have done wrong. Someone please help!

Thanks!

>> 1T
I can't seem to get any stability with 1:1 and Corsair XMS3200XL at speeds of around 250Mhz for the memory. Changed to 2T and it seems fine at the moment. With 1T, the PC would randomnly restart and have memory read errors. Programs would randomnly crash too. Is this what happens with this 1t problem?

How come I am reading some people are achieving 250Mhz for the RAM with 1T settings? Tried a billion bios versions, all the same problem

Reading about seems Im not alone, but will this be fixed by a bios update or a revision?

Got a San Diego 3700+ if that helps, currently at 240x11 3-4-4-8 (a safe mode until I find out if I am not the only one)

250mhz is pushing it pretty hard Raf. That RAM is scheduled at 200mhz so anything approaching 250mhz is really fast. i would have expected instability well before 250.

Does anybody have a list of XP64 bit drivers and their URLs for the a8n deluxe. I cannot find a 64 bit driver for firewire. Has anybody had problems with the 64 bit Realtek 'AC97 drivers? (drivers not recognising the audio chip) If so, is there a workaround?

Thanks

>> Ever be fixed? :(
It's just really really annoying me, runs stable and fine at 2T, but I want 1T, the whole point in buying good memory for this board, other nforce 4 boards are running 1T fine, and I have seen somewhere that they said there would be a fix in 10 days (this was the start of the month.....) Can't go over roughly 240 at 1T without issues, I don't think changing the RAM will make any difference, there have been a very few who are running 1T, but most I have read, people can't get it to work.

I fear this problem will never ever be fixed, and will end up having to buy another board :(

tried 3-4-4-8 which is what the 250Mhz chips are rated at, at that speed. Still problems. 2T is perfectly stable

Been reading a lot on forums and sites, it seems this problem is quite common, even with PC4000 memory etc :(
