If I start this install over again, I have to figure out how to get the PCI & SM Bus controllers without installing the NVidia chipset drivers. Hoping for some knowledge here.

I misunderstood you, I thought you were running a RAID array. Go into BIOS and disable the two RAID controllers and their ports. Reboot and see if the drive is recognized.

Thanks for trying to help.
I disabled the raid and still boot to "Disk Boot Failure".

I'd be curious to hear if anyone else with Maxtor drives have had problems using the NVidia chipset.
Maxtor drives come with a MaxBlast4 CD and the instruct you to load the controllers from a floppy at the beginning of XP install (F6). I had to learn this by searching Maxtor. I did not get any support info or CD with the OEM hard drive from New Egg. I'd really like to know how others using Maxtor drives have fared and what they did about the chipset drivers.
I guess I'll start on that re-install.

Cqthy-
There are a lot of people reporting problems w/ maxtor drives and Nvidia chipsets on many different boards. If you have another HDD available you may want to load XP onto that so you can start enjoying your expensive PC rather than the frustration you have to be feeling. You may never get the MoBo and the HDD to like each other. Get a Western Digital and use the Maxtor as a external back up or something. Sorry we couldn't help.

It should take a few prisoners anyway! lol

It will definitely be one of a kind. Did you notice I'm switching to the DFI LANPARTY NF4 SLI-DR?
I will still keep the A8N-SLI DLX for Scientific reasons though. lol

>Your drive is on SATA1 of the NVRaid (Black).

Yes, that is where it's attached.

>Disable all RAID functions in the BIOS in the Onboard Device Configuration Window>NVRAID Configuration, SIL as well.

All is disabled under NVRAID Cinfiguration.

>Reboot, and your drive will be in the MAIN BIOS window under First SATA Master.

Here's the snag; once this failure happens, as before, the hard drive is not listed any longer on the MAIN page. It WAS there as First SATA Master, but both times this happened, it disappeared.
I took the Hard drive to a computer tech and he tested it as good.

>In the BIOS under boot device configuration window, set to, CD, Removable, HD, Disable

>In the BIOS under the Boot menu, Make sure the Hard Disk Drive is 1st Master SATA1 NVRAID in the list then Bootable add in cards number 2..

All that appears here once the hard disk stops being recognized is "removable boot disk". The hard drive USED TO be here, but it's gone.

Then Reboot.
>Hit enter at the BOOT from CD prompt and install XP without any NVRAID Drivers.

When this happened the first time, I reformatted the hard drive with the Maxtor MaxBlast utility as Maxtor recommends, which wiped the drive, and re-installed XP without any RAID drivers that I could avoid by choice. XP installed; I added drivers for graphics, sound card and peripherals. All was fine untill the chipset driver upgrade.

>Once you format and get windows installed, your computer will reboot. Enter the BIOS once again to set the Boot Device Priority to HD, CD ROM, Removable, Disable then reboot.

I attempted to reformat with MaxBlast once again, but the utility could not even find the hard drive this time (it did recognize it the first time), so I ran XP Setup from the CD and hit F6 to install the Maxtor controllers. Setup now gets stuck trying to load Windows after this. I tried running setup without loading the Maxtor controllers, and it didn't get stuck, but I don't think I should install without adding the Maxtor controllers.

I shut down the computer to let it cool down completely before I try again. I'm going to disconnect and reconnect the hard drive before booting up. don't know if this will do any good, but I can't think of a way to get the computer to "see" the hard drive again.

>Let me know if you get past these stages or which one your getting stuck on.

Mike

Should I start thinking that the MB is the problem here?? Raf H has two Maxtors without problem,
so... (????)

With this RAM I guess it will be a lot faster, it was made for that board, guaranteed 1T at 550 and 600 DDR.

I think a few have had the problem, allegedly it's something to do with the newer Nvidia drivers, I'm not sure. I just use the ones that came on disk at the moment, no problems at all.

One thing, I'm willing to help you in getting this going, but please do not make any harsh descisions, as there is ultimately a process I'm following to cure your problem.

Mike

Mike,

I DO appreciate your help and all others here. It's been the most useful forum for information and advice.
Believe me_ I do not want to blame this MB and regret not getting the MSI. I liked the features on this board and have always respected NVidia for their components.

I just booted up the computer after a cool down and TA-DA! _ the hard drive is now listed in the Boot Menu again. :-) I have been a little suspicious that there is an overheating problem going on here with the NVidia chipset. I keep checking the chipset fan along with all the others and it IS running. My office is a bit warm though, so I have a fan in the window drawing cool air in.

I just tried booting from the hard drive and it went straight to CHKDSK. I may regret trying to boot from the hard drive. It just shut down. I went into set up from the reboot and the drive is still showing up as primary SATA. NVRAID Configuration is disabled. Silicon SATA Controller is also disabled.

Should I go from here with a re-install of XP without the NVidia controller install?
Is there something else I should check or suspect here?

Cathy

Thanks again Mike.

Reformatted and am now re-installing XP Pro with the Maxtor controllers.

I think that on the first install, I never did install the chipset upgrade. I used the chipset driver off the MB CD and had these problems start somewhere along the line. Actually had the HD disappear after trying to configure the network connection. I also could not get firewall to operate consistently or have the links to firewall controls work.

I sure don't want to have to install again. I'm thinking of not installing the NVidia firewall. And I still have to figure out how to get the PCI controllers and SM Bus drivers without installing the chipset drivers.
? Should I download an older version of the chipset drivers?

If you don't have the drivers you can get it here if you want.

Catherine, one more thing, don't give up, it can be like a combination to open a lock, there's a few other things we can do before an RMA.

Evidently, based on my Google search of "nforce4, Maxtor" it doesn't matter which NForce4 board you have, there are problems with the NCQ function of Maxtor SATA drives and the NForce controllers.

I am up and running so far so good. I could not download the version you suggested because the Asus site is inaccessible right now. I put the MB CD in the drive and used the Device Manager to find just the drivers I needed from the CD for the PCI devices without installing anything else.
This seems to have worked. (Knock on Wood) I was also very stingy about what I installed from the CD's (no extra software for now) The computer is running fast and better than any other install attempt.
