I am having trouble getting XP Pro installed. Its an OEM version with SP2. I have 1GB of Corsair Value Select Ram installed. The first time I tried to install xp it started failing to read files half way through the install. I continued the install skipping a bunch of files. After getting into windows it rebooted and then gave me an error reading disk.

I then move the RAM for slots 1 and 3 (the 2 blue ones) and put it into slots 1 and 2 (1 blue and 1 black). That seemed to let me install XP ok but when I tried to install the other drivers I kept getting "RPC server not available". Looking at the services there were very few that were actually started and after manually starting them I was able to install the other drivers but system was very unstable.

I then found this FAQ and flashed the BIOS to ver 1008 and changed the settings per this FAQ. I tried installing XP again with the RAM back in slots 1 and 3 but machine kept locking up while loading setup files. I took 1 stick of RAM out (the one in slot 3) and tried to reinstall XP again which it did install but with one error (something to do with DCOM). After logging into XP installing MB drivers I tried to run windows update, again had to manually start a lot of services, after reboot I just get a BSOD.

Is there a compatability issue with this RAM? I checked their website and it shows as compatible.

John Lovell-
Not sure if this will help or not (probably not) but remove the Soundblaster and activate the onboard sound in BIOS and then try and load Windows. Also, make sure that you are doing a full reinstall each time and not a partial, ie. Delete any partitions and reformat the drive.

MArvin Man-
What kind of RAM are you using and how many DIMMS? Where are you installing it?

My RAM is a Kingston Value Ram 1GB 2 Pack. The serial is KVR400X64C3AK2/1G. I installed the sticks into slots A1 and A2 (the blue slots).

That RAM should be fine and it is loaded in the blue slots (A1 B1) so that isn't the problem. If you can borrow a good PSU and try it out that would help in your troubleshooting.

Hey, I've got a question concerning power supplies:

Would these two work?

Sky Hawk/Eagle Tech POWERONE SERIES ATX-GM570PC ATX 12V, EPS 12V, AMD ATX-GES 570W Power Supply - Retail

Sky Hawk/Eagle Tech PowerOne ATX-GM470PC ATX 12V, EPS 12V, AMD ATX-GES 470W Power Supply - Retail

I'm not so sure if they'll work on the A8N-SLI, but I need a cheap power supply. I will not being using it for a SLI setup just yet, but I just need one to get the new build up and running.

No specs available for that one either but you get what you pay for with PSUs. Good luck.

Well, the chipset fan gave out on my motherboard after only two months. I called and got the replacement fan sent out and installed it today. I must admit it's kind of a pain to have to remove the motherboard to replace that fan. I put everything back together, and everything started up just fine.

The old fan was running at over 9000 rpm all the time. The new fan runs just over 5000 rpm and is much quieter. Believe it or not I'm actually happy that my old fan failed now.

FX-55 San Diego this afternoon. (Fedex overnight fron ZipZoomFly) to replace a busted FX/55 Clawhammer....anybody know who replaces pins?...not just "some guy" but someone that you know has done it.

Anyway, No memory problems with Corsair TWINX2048C2pt (2.5,3,3,6,1T,2.7v). I using the Bios: Ver 1011-001 and Nforce 71.89. Ran SiSoft burnIn and CPU Burn for a couple hours.
All I noticed is that the San Diego is WAY cooler than the Clawhammer.

Well, just ruled out RAM.

Can you tell me what kind of Network connection you're on? ADSL, Cable? And also what adaptor you're using NV or Marvell?

As far as I can tell, my problem here must be pretty unique. I can't find an answer anywhere, so I'd greatly appreciate your help! I have installed 2 Leadtek 6800GT's into the board and all is going great except SLi will not work unless I have my monitor unplugged and then it only displays an image on my tv-output. It is a very strange situation I think. I can't disable the TV out anyway that I have tried and no matter what as long as I try to enable SLi with the monitor hooked up it says I must switch my monitor from secondary card to primary card or something similar to that. If I could just get the TV Out disabled and the monitor output enabled as the sole output I think it would work fine but I can't figure out anyway I can do that. Even with the TV cable unplugged it still thinks there is a TV there but with the monitor unplugged it realizes it is gone. I hope you understand what I am saying, but I will be watching out for a reply and any questions you may have in regards to the issue. Again, help is very very appreciated! Thanks you.

Right from the start before I even put the system together I Installed the Zalman ZM-NB47J Chipset cooler, and with Two 512mb 6800 ultra cards it fits and cools awesome. Just from building so many computers, I always replace the chipset with a good heatsink or fan combo. Hope this helps

Will using an EZ Plug for one GFX card make a difference? Very rarely during a game the monitor goes off, but system still seems to be responding, so I am thinking power consumption of the HiS X800XL i have gets a bit too high at some times.

Will plugging in the EZ Plug for 1 GFX Card help it? Or it only works when 2 are in?

Robert Waddell-
Looking at the back of your computer, plug your monitor into the top, left hand video card socket. Open the Nvidia utility and go to tools and select "Detect Displays" at the bottom. You must have the monitor plugged into the top card only.

any good one-click, free, registry cleaner out there? I've been doing a lot of installing/ uninstalling, re-installing, error, uninstalling/ reinstalling, patching. I've install a 30-day demo for NAV Internet Security 2005, and now I'm getting error on the install itself. My iPod is not getting recognized now that I've reinstalled it for 2 times now...keeps screwing up my playlist.

thanks

Ray
