Just F. Y. I.

Like so many others, I also have a defective chipset fan on the A8N. Mine doesn't squeal, but it can't make up it's mind what speed to run at. It oscillates between fast and slow and the chip under it gets so hot, you can't leave your finger on the fan cover for very long.

Rather that replacing it with a passive Kalman heatsink, as some have done, I decided to give Asus a try. On their forums, several people reported getting replacements for free under warranty. They are a new design and bigger, according to the posts.

The forum suggested callling 510-739-3777 and selecting option 3 for RMA. They said not to call the technical support number. I was on hold for 3 minutes. I told the woman who answered that I had a defective chipset fan and she said they could ship one out to me the next day. She wanted my motherboard model, serial number and address and I was done in 2 minutes.

I'll post again after it arrives.

Stuart,

Great if that fixed your problem. But when I had Maxtor Hard Drives, sometime they were not even recognized on Bios.

My chipset fan has also recently started squalling, varying speed greatly, and sometimes stopping completely. I have found the blades seem loose, such that it vibrates (which is noisy) and sometimes drags on something before it stops. It has very few hours of operation, as I have very little software installed (win XP plus two other small programs). I can get it to work temporarily by gently pressing on the center of the fan for a moment. Seems like this tightens it up a little on its spindle, and it may run for a few hours, or only a few minutes, before it jams again. This allows me to get a little work done while I wait for the new fan. Of course I do not leave the room with the compter running, and I keep Asus Probe window active in a corner of the screen.

Was not quite as lucky as Paul Crook above with Asus. My 10 minute wait phone call merely generated their email for me to formally apply for the fan via my email reply. Have no idea of arrival date, but at least they did not give me any static.

Above comments merely for general info. But, a question -- for those who have already replaced the OEM with the new asus fan -- how is the new fan doing? any indications it may be more reliable? Any way to install without pulling the mobo? If it seems to be stable out for you, I shall start loading software after the install.

Ok, So I finally got this motherboard set up, but the thing is I'm using a Zalman 7700-AlCu so I'm getting a "Your CPU Fan Failed" message on boot, even though I know it didn't and my CPU is running at 33c. Zalman reccomend to change the settings in the BIOS so that it either does not check the CPU fan or it does not give the warning unless the fan is going under 900RPM but I can't find this option.

Anyone know where it is or another way to disable this error message?

Ron Reicher,

Yeh, I'd get that too, but only after the BSOD had occurred. The hard drive would be locked (red light was on full) and the PC couldn't find the HD at all. Only after I had cut the power that I could get the PC to boot up again.

I had a BSOD yesterday after installing Adobe Reader 7. Microsoft reported that it was a memory write error, referring to my RAM. I downloaded the tool to check my RAM, and no errors were found after several passes. Therefore, if it's not the RAM, then it could as well be my Virtual Memory > hard drive...
I've now completely uninstalled the nVidia IDE driver, so I'm waiting for another BSOD to happen.

Hello :)

I had fun for a little while now bugland is back again :(

I have RMA'-ed my A8N SLI Deluxe as it would just BSOD, got a new replacement board after a few weeks :s It run fine for a few days, maybe even a whole week. No BSODs, no errors, except that often the sound appeared to come from only 1 of my monitor speakers. Then one day, in the middle of a game, my sound started screaching and squealing like crazy and my video got all messed up. I shutdown the system straight away.

Ever since then my sound is messed up. During post the sound seems fine (1speaker) then the Win startup tune sounds all scratched and heavily distorted. If I play mp3 in media player, you can hear the music, with a metallic echoing like mad. In iTunes you hear the same mp3 for a few seconds, then nothing. If I visit say msn.com, the video of some pictures is all messed up. Colours running all through eachother that don't make any sense. In some games like Quake3, I seem to have only problems with the sound. In other applications like the Windows "Welcome New User" window after a clean format and a fresh instal is all blurred up. You can just read the "Welcome to Microsoft Windows" text, the rest is blurred. I have no clue how my sound can mess up parts of my video?

So I really wonder how to fix this??? No sound is no fun! And messed up video neither :(

My specs:
A8N-SLI Deluxe rev. 1.02
AMD Athlon +3200 Winchester @ 2000 Mhz
Zalman CNPS7000B-AlCu LED
CORSAIR TWINX XLPRO 1024 (2x512), PC3200 @ 400Mhz
EN6600GT DOOM3 LIMITED EDITION : 1.1GHz(550MHz DDR3)
Asus DRW-1608P
C:\\s-ata maxtor 160gb + 2x IDE maxtor drives
Sony floppydrive

I feel like this board is also bad, and I need to RMA again. :( Any suggestions before I do that are very welcome. So far I have reset my BIOS, reinstalled windows, so also all drivers. I have taken out one graphic card, same problem, switched that one, same problem, so I stuck both in again. Last what I have tried is downloading the realtek drivers from realtek, installed them rather than the nvidia ones, and it has the same freakin scratching sound. :(

Aino-
Have you tried a set of headphones, or another set of speakers, to rule out a problem with the monitor speakers? Generally, monitor speakers are not of the higest quality.

Aino Toonder,

Have you tried another monitor?
Sounds to me like the monitor has been damaged.

I am no longer getting any BSOD's after uninstalling the nVidia Firewall, nVidia Network Access Manager and nVidia IDE SW driver.

In that case, try reinstalling the sound drivers and the video drivers. If that doesn't work, then it could be perminant hardware damage. Hopefully it isn't though!

You asked..
As a side question, my cd drive didn't come with an audio cable. Does that just mean it doesn't need it, or do I need to buy one?

Contrary to what others have said, no, you do not need to hook up a separate audio connection from your CD player...or DVD player either.

Aino,
Per sound problem - make sure using appropriate output ports - digital or analog. In past, I have had a few ports actually mechanically mis-shapen such that poor or no solid connection was made. Depending on design and location, I was often able to realign contacts and salvage the equipment. My current case has one such port now (on top, for earphones) but I have not yet taken it apart. Motherboard mounted ports can be more problem to fix.

thanks :)

Euhm it's an Antec Superlanboy and so i like to use it's sound port in front for my headset. Same problem. I connect my monitor to just the green port on the board's port on the back. Prob aint the ports :) Nice try ;)

It doesn't matter which port I use, the sound is heavily distorted.

I am still having some strange problems, such as rebooting, lockups, and even my cdrom(slave) is not reading data. After talking with a friend who had similar problems he said that when installing xp he had to hit F6 at the beginning and select the proper chipset for his SATA drive to work correctly. I did not do this and was wondering if this is standard practice.

My system specs:

antec truepower 550 psu
nvidia geforce 6800 ultra (not installed just in case the thing fries- so it's not drawing power)
1 mb ram (2 512 sticks)
athlon 64 3500+
antec p160 case
seagate HD, NEC optical drive
asus a8n sli deluxe motherboard.

A couple of days ago I first tried to boot it; the green motherboard light goes on and the front panel flashes for a second, then it goes dark and the system does not boot. The case fans do not come on at all. I waited for a 20-24 pin adaptor to come for the power cord, but it makes not difference. Someone suggested earlier when I posted that the psu might be dying. Is there any way to tell? Or is there an obvious compatibility issue with my hardware? I checked and im pretty sure all the cables are in. As far as the power, I plugged in the 24 extra, the standard power, and even the EZ plug just in case. The motherboard "on" switch is correctly wired to the case, since the thing goes on for a second. Help?

John L,
A little more info please. Tell us which controller each installed device is connected to. Also, in which slot is the sound card connected? Did you install any drivers during the Win install (either nVidia or Sil Image)? Have these problems existed since the initial build, or develop with additional use? I assume you upgraded the BIOS to 1008, so it apparently has run at least sometimes sucessfully.

JP-
Please plug a 6 pin power cord into the Ultra and try to boot. If it is installed in the PCIe slot it will be sensed but if not getting power then it will probably cause problems. If this works please post and if not let us know that too. TIA
