Memory Question -- Basic

I'm missing something here. For dual channel setup standard practice seems to be kit of 2-512 sticks. I take it a 2gb kit of 2-1024 sticks does not work well. Am I right on this?

I've searched, I am sure the answer is here but I have not been able to locate it.

Thanks.

Bob

Bob-
2x1024GB of memory is fine. I am currently running that setup and it's great. Asus has some recommended DIMMS or you can experiment http://usa.asus.com/products/mb/socket939/a8nsli-d/overview.htm#

Yes it's at an 45deg angle compared to the old one.

If you want to be safe remove the m/b, but!

It can replaced without removing the m/b, but not recommended for the faint hearted. In my case. I have a Stacker CM case, and there is plenty of clearance between the m/b and the tray to remove the debris.

You'll have to be brave/brutal/stupid, and mind the Caps there may be also some of flexing of m/b.

Merc,

That drive order did the trick. Seemed that having the order cd, hard drive... screwed with the the order of which hard drive tried to boot.. as soon as put dropped the cd down, it booted perfectly. Thanks for all your help.. the machine is now running perfectly (cept for a shonky chipset fan which is going to be fixed under warranty).

take it easy dude.

Just replaced a thermaltake 680watt powersupply with a pc power&cooling 850SSI and the system no longer shuts off. And I score 10186 in 3DMark2005.

PCs are getting rediculous on Power, Power which is watts is P=Ixe I being Current and E being voltage.
I think there should be a 450 Watt Powersupply that is able to support SLI/Crossfire setups and later pluginboards without having a hitch at all. This Topic is getting too long probably time to start a new topic to continue this one.

I choose what I want and the other page will go back to auto.. I cant touch the dram page at all because i will lose my voltage and cpu-fsb settings...
Tried a few bioses with the same problem... anyone know what to do?

Hi there, I tried plugging in an old set of speakers just now with a dodgy AC adaptor, and now the PC won't output any audio... when I try to get it to sense the connectors, it says failed for all of them. The channel tests don't give any error, but also don't ouput any sound. What could be the problem here? How can I fix it?

Thanks...

First Post:

Wow, what a helpful forum - thanks to Sander for generously providing it and his advice/feedback.

I'm attempting my first PC build and having bought the Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe Mobo then finding this forum - I've had the begeezus scared out of me. If the thing ever works I'll be very impressed with myself.

I'm just assembling all the parts at this stage - hopefully, if I follow the advice in Sander's first post I should have a smooth sail. Will try to post a positive experience if all goes well.

Here is the parts box:

Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
AMD 64/4600 X2
Corsair 2G Twinx2048-3200c2
Zalman CNPS7700-CU RT CPU Fan
One EVGA 6800GT 256MB Video Card
Antec 550W PSU Version2x
Antec P180 Case
2 x Western Digital 74GB 10,000rpm HDD (was going to RAID 1 these, but now think just drive C and D would be better and do a regular cloning)
2 x NEC ND-3520A DVD+/-RW
1 - Sony Floppy Drive

Seems that if I replace the chipset fan upfront I'll void the warranty versus waiting a couple of weeks until it craps out then requesting a replacement from Asus.

Thanks again Sander for this thread - very hepful.

Rob.

Rob-
Flash to 1008 BIOS. Set the Jumperfree config. for the CPU to auto to start with and for that RAM (I have the exact same stuff) set the following timings:
DDR 400
CAS 2.5
tRCD 3
tRP 3
tRAS 6
all others auto

On the hard drives if you are not going to RAID then disable both SATA RAID controllers in BIOS and hook them up to the NVports. Remember to load both drivers during windows install (SATA and Storage) so you'll do two loads when prompted.

manual settings: 2-2-2-5-2
memtest: redscreen, errors after 6%, 70MB+ up all the way to 1024MB, 432'000 errors.
sisandra: bluescreen + reboot.

...i also tried 1006 and 1012 bios and all 4 modules inside etc.
nothing works, although it should.
And I thought the only thing not working will be cmd rate 1T with 4 DS modules *sigh*
but not even a dualchannel config of 2 modules work with me, no matter if conservative or agressive timings.

I'm out of ideas.
please help :/

Hope you can help. I want to RAID0 x2 raptor 74gb drives. However, when enabling the nvRAID within the BIOS the post seems to freeze when it is Detectting Array. Any ideas on how to get round this? or what is causing this problem? Thanks
