>> Re: Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe FAQ
Hello everyone,

I'm hoping someone has any insight to provide for a very quick question: did anyone manage to get a Sound Blaster Live! PCI card working in an A8N-SLI Deluxe?

More details:
My SBLive Platinum card, that works perfectly in any other PC, is detected on my computer with the A8N-SLI Deluxe board, and the drivers are installed without any hassles, but as soon as the OS tries to initialize it and play a sound, the computer crashes almost immediately. This happens in Windows (sometimes with a 0x9C blue screen, sometimes without) and Linux (I've tried Knoppix, Ubuntu and Mandrake), so it's not a Windows driver problem.
I have tried several combinations of reserving IRQs in BIOS, changing PCI slots, removing other hardware, trying different driver and motherboard BIOS revisions (currently using 1011), etc. and I'm running out of ideas.
Other PCI soundcards / other cards also work properly in the PC.

Here are the relevant PC specs, off the top of my head:
Athlon64 3000+
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe
ASUS GeForce 6600GT 128Mb PCI-E (tried removing it and using only onboard video, the problem remains)
Kingston 2x512Mb DDR400 (tried removing/swapping DIMMs)
2x120Gb IDE disks + 300Gb SATA2 disk (tried even with none of these connected)
LG IDE DVD-R drive (also tried removing it)

Thanks for any help.

Gornoth-
Make sure you disable AC 97 onboard sound in BIOS.

Merc,

I have done so. Also disabled the MIDI port, and any other hardware that was not strictly necessary during the troubleshooting (and several combinations thereof).

Thanks for your reply. Any other ideas?

EDIT: By the way, I also had a false glimmer of hope once while troubleshooting, when sound came out of the speakers while the SBLive was plugged in... turns out I had forgotten to disable the AC97. :/
So you actually don't have to disable the onboard card in order to have another soundcard work. Although it's always a good idea to do as you said. ;)

>> Overclocking
Well I decided to order the config I posted on the previous page on these boards and my last question is about overclocking. I noticed there is a "nos" setup or something that supposedly auto overclocks your system depending on what you have. Is this right? As I have never oc'd before I'd like to get some input from some of you that have already messed around with this feature.

>> Blue Screen: MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION
Ok everyone, I'm having some major problems. When I Was first trying to install windows, I would get a blue screen with this message over and over again at random times: MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION

After what seemed to be some random poking, prodding, and switching, I was able to install windows, but it would blue screen with this message shortly after entering. Then, after a little more fiddling, mostly moving RAM around and trying my roomate's RAM, I was able to stay in windows and install service packs and drivers. Now, I only get the screen when trying to install Battlefield 2. But, it happens every time mo matter what. I'm even stable in Windows using my own RAM, and the only way it crashed is if I try to install a game.

I think I've ruled out the RAM, as I've tried 3 totally different sets. I took out my sound card, so it's not that. I can't think of anything else to turn to, other than maybe my hard drives. I have 2 40 gig Maxtor IDE drives that I was using on RAID 0 in my old system, but for simplicity and testing I went ahead and just used them as single drives to see if I could even setup/get into windows, etc. I thought maybe the first drive I tried was faulty, but I then I tried installing windows on the other drive and still got the same thing... blue screen.

I have upgraded the BIOS to version 1008, and I can't think of what else to do. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

My system specs are:

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (Venice core)
Asus brand GeForce 6600GT
1 GB Corsair Value Select DDR400 RAM (2 x 512)
2 x Maxtor 40 GB IDE hard drives
no sound card currently
some random combo optical drive
OCZ Modstream power supply

Where do you have all the IDE drives mounted? Make sure that all the master/slave jumpers are correctly set. I would have the two hard drives on IDE primary and set as master and slave and the CD ROM on IDE secondary

Then make sure your boot order is hard drive / cdrom / removable and also that you have the correct hard drive boot order set (another boot category).

right now I'm just using one of the hard drives for simplicity's sake. I have it set to master and plugged into the primary IDE port. The optical drive is plugged into the secondary IDE port and set to master. I just finished installing the latest firmware for my optical drive, as well as the latest nForce drivers for the chipset on the board itself. Stll give me a blue screen on during the install process. I am almost out of options, short of saying that my motherboard is either faulty or simply incompatible with the rest of my system. Thanks so much for your help.

Well I finally found the problem. I swapped out my optical drive (which is pretty old) with my roomate's and everything works fine now. Simple solution, I'm just glad I finally figured out what the problem was; what a good feeling that is! Thanks again for your responses and help!

Nicholas-
What type and PSU (power supply unit) are you using? What kind of hard drive(s) are you using and how are they hooked up? Why are you loading Windows ME??? A very poor OS that is not worth installing. Why not XP w/ SP2 installed? If you answer the questions I asked I can help you get XP installed correctly.

Is your XP disk a licensed version or pirate copy. If it is a normal licensed version we can get it to boot. Also, take out the Soundblaster card for now. You have onboard sound and we can deal with the SB after you have everything up and running. SB's cause problems w/ the NV4 chipset if you are just setting up your system.

>> Re: Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe FAQ
Greetings all,

I'm at my wits end. First here is the hardware and version setup on my rig:

-- a8n-sli deluxe (obviously), this is the second one, I RMA'd the first to try and fix this problem. - Running bios v.1011
-- 2x eVGA 6800GT 256MB video cards (nvidia sli certified AX models)
-- 1GB RAM, here I've tried both a set of geil 2x512MB PC4000 and Crucial ballistix PC3200 (2-2-2-5) 2x512MB
-- Enermax Noisetaker 600w (nvidia sli certified), also tried a xion 600w as well as a TTGI 600w
-- AMD64 3500+ Winchester Core
-- 2x Hitachi Deskstar 80GB SATA running RAID-0 on the nvidia controller
-- SB Audigy Platinum w/ front bay connections
-- Samsung SyncMaster 191T+ LCD Panel (connected with the DVI connector)
-- WindowsXP Professional w/ SP2
-- NVidia video drivers versions 71.84, 71.89, 77.72
-- NVidia nforce4 drivers versions 6.39, 6.53

Ok, so now the problem. When I boot the machine up fresh and play a 3D game (Half Life 2, Doom 3, World of Warcraft, Vampire: Bloodlines), I can play for hours and hours without a hitch, and the temperatures reported on the CPU, Video Cards, etc report just fine. But if I let the machine sit at the desktop, doing absolutely nothing, for anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours, and then I try to start a 3D game, the screen goes blank, and the machine is locked up hard. It does not do this if I run the rig with only 1 video card, and I have tried my video cards in a buddies MSI based sli setup without a hitch at all. As I said above, I'm at my wits end, I really hope someone can shed some light on this for me.

Thanks in advance,

Eric

Hey,

I have the same problem I already saw mentioned a few times: when I boot my machine, I only get a blank screen, no boot screen, no beeps, nothing... although CPU and graphics card fans do run.

I flashed the bios to 1008 which I need for the 4200+ X2, and the flash went OK until it rebooted when it was done.

I tried the fixes/workarounds I could find here, even the one from page 6 (removing battery and power plug for a while, putting the PSU in again, booting), but even then: nothing happens, not even a beep.

Could this be a faulty BIOS? If so, is there any way to flash or reset it, seeing as I don't get any screen interaction and so can't access the flash utilities or the bios itself?

The graphics card is a Sapphire X850XT PE, and the mobo is the A8N-SLI.

Thanks!

I've been running my a8n-sli system for about 4 months now and it's been great. I replaced the chipset fan and since then everything's been pretty perfect. I've got 2 80GB seagate SATA NCQ drives in RAID striped. Would games run smoother if I were to use these 2 drives separately: 1 for OS and 1 for game installation? I've never tried and was wondering if anyone here has. Thanks!

You need at least BIOS 1011 to run that hot X2 chip of yours. Check out the Asus web site. The X2 was not supported at 1008.

Removed the soundcard (now using onboard), and still no joy. I do appreciate the help with this. Look forward to a reply.
