>> Re: Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe FAQ
Hey all,

I have a particularly strange problem and haven't found a post about it so I thought I'd post :) If I've missed it, I apologise, but I've spent quite some time searching and browsing the many pages of this post... so here goes:

My system specs are as follows:

ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe
AMD x2 4800+
Zalman fan on top of it
ASUS 7800GTX
2x1024mb of OCZ (2-3-2-5)
SB Audigy 2 ZS
2x 74gb Raptors in Raid striping (windows and apps) (nv sata 1/2)
2x 250gb wd drives in a separate raid array (nv sata 3/4)
OCZ 600W psu
Antec P180 case (all fans installed and working)
great cooling on the case (antec p180) - cpu and other temps all well below unsafe levels
No overclocking whatsoever
Ram set manually to its correct speed in bios

Setup:
Followed instructions at the beginning of this post re: bios setup.
Using the NV lan port with the marvell disabled. Silicon raid disabled.

Basically my problem is this:

My ping to localhost is extremely eratic and seems to be affected by use of other parts on the pci-bus, such as the video card, sound card, etc.

There is no IRQ conflict that I can see.

If I load a game and ping localhost or my router, I get something like this:

Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time=18ms TTL=128
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time=18ms TTL=128
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time=18ms TTL=128
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time=18ms TTL=128

That's... not right.

But it gets worse.

Often higher than usual pings are coupled with:

Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time=-18ms TTL=128
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time=-18ms TTL=128

That's right - negative pings. Impressive huh? (those numbers change too, not just 1's and 18's... though sometimes it seems to get stuck on a particular number and will be +6, -6, etc... dunno if that's relevant?)

Someone suggested reinstalling windows with a slipstreamed sp2, but I've been told it's not the tcp/ip stack that's broken, it's my PCI-BUS running into problems.

A friend has an almost exact same system as this and he solved the problem by buying a separate NiC and using that with both onboards disabled. I'd prefer to avoid that - kinda ridiculous I can't use either of the onboard gigalan ports...

I've tried this with either port disabled or both enabled - nothing matters. The system runs ok for a while and then once a game is played, etc. it goes to hell.

I'm running bios version 1011 (latest stable I think?) - nv drivers 6.66, latest graphics and sound drivers, have no other system conflicts or anything... typically I'll go linkdead in games and lose network feed. It's not my router either cause other computers have no other issues. I moved my soundcard around, too, even removed it, doesn't make a difference. It seems more related to the video card than anything.

Any ideas? I've done the whole pci manual speed to 33.33, etc. I'm seriously out of ideas. I thought I'd fixed it, but as soon as I ran a game today the pings went crazy again and remain as such till I reboot (or crash).

Any help would be much appreciated. You guys seem to be the authority on this :)

Cheers,

Warren

Remove the Audigy and its drivers. Reset the CMOS/BIOS (unplug remove battery and reset jumpers) Boot into BIOS and set everything as you se fit and see if that helps.

So it POSTs OK but your drives don't show up in BIOS? If you are plugged in as suggested above then reset the CMOS/BIOS by unplugging the PC, removing the battery, moving the jumper from pins 1&2 to 2&3 and back again, replace the battery, plug back in and restart.

Well I RMA'd my mobo and still the same problem .... I can't get it to post at all

The problem now is that I have changed eveysingle component in the pc and still can't get it to post ... so now I figure it must be me

If you have ideas I would be so grateful ... I followed your guide on pg 185 still no joy

I'm so fed up with it

If you followed that guide and it wouldn't POST then you have a bad component. Can you get your hands on a cheap PSU and see if hooking it up to the stripped down mobo will make it POST. Just the cpu/HSF, 1 stick of RAM and one video card, plug in the 24 pin and 4 pin from the second PSU and see if it will POST (you don't even have to remove anything or mount the PSU just the 2 plugs into the mobo).

PS - You could even carry the mobo to your other PC and plug in the monitor, 24 pin and 4 pin from its PSU and see if that will start the thing.

I actually have another PSU and have tried that ... same thing

have tried 3 sticks of Ram ... same thing

I tried another CPU same thing

The thing is though I have no way of knowing if any of those other components worked in another already working machine

The PC I use at the moment is getting on a bit and it none of the components will work in it

I guess I could have done something fundamentally wrong and messed up all the components before they even got to the switching on stage ????

The only thing I have an issue with is that the Tagan PSU I have has a grounding wire and I guess I could have that in the wrong place? But then if that wasthe case would all the fans come on when the P4 lead wasn't in ... I don't know

Neil

Neil-
I'm not sure what grounding wire you are talking about. This Tagan PSU sounds like it is built for a server and I would bet dollars to donuts it is the source of your problems. The other thing I am thinking is that your case is shorting something out. Maybe and extra standoff or frayed metal touching the board.

So, I would suggest you remove the mobo from the case and lay it on an insulated surface (wooden desktop or cork board, etc) in the stripped down configuration. Hook up a "normal" PSU and see if it will POST. Use the one from your other PC as I said before (just use the 2 power leads).

This is frustrating because I know it is a simple thing causing all these problems. I'll be off for an hour or so.

If you can go to page 185 and run through that procedure I sent to Mikko and use just one video card. I think you are having some kind of component conflict. Is the Floppy light on continuously? Does the CD Drive light stay on? Anyways try taht procedure as it will help to start isolating the trouble. Good luck.

well I 've tried it with the other power supply ... with the board on a piece of wood but the same problem

I guess this rules out a short anywhere ... so It must be either the graphics card ... the ram or the CPU

Or could there be something else

If you missed my post here it is again. Please help.

Hello everyone
This is my first post here so I am sorry if this has been covered before. I have the 1011 version of the bios, and my chipset temps are 52c. This seems high compared to what I am used to. I think the 6800gt is adding to the heat proplem since it is practically on top of it. I was wondering if this is indeed too high and what some solutions might be in countering the problem?
I was also concidering getting a Arctic Cool NV Silencer 5 rev.2 for my GPU and was wondering if anyone knows if it will fit the mobo since the chipset is where it is?

Damn, I thought that you could've cleared it up with the move. Well, my next guess is the CPU but I thought that you had tried it in another system and it was fine? If not see if someone will test it for you. Video card swap is easy, just need soeone to pull theirs for you or try yours in their system. Can't believe thatRAM would be causing a problem like this.

Thought I had PMed you. ANyways, that temp is to high and yes the 6800GT will add to case heat but your setup should be running fine regardless. Check and make sure that the chipset fan is actually running. They are a known problem on this board and Asus will send you a replacement for free with just a phone call. As for your second question, yes the NV5 works great on this board, i am using one on each of my XFX 6800GT's and have gotten outstanding results.

thanx Merc
I have verified that the fan is working and it is the new that they have been replacing the faulty ones with. I dont know what to do next, I have tried everything but the temp persists. I am afraid I am going to do damage to my board if I continue to use it at that temp. It is stabe though and man the system flies. If you have any other ideas lay them on me. I am not scared of water cooling if that is the only alternitive but I will need advice there too.

Merc,
I was replacing mbo cpu ram and video from p4 to x2 4200. I was keeping my old drives and sound card etc.
I put the old mbo back in backed up my data formatted the drives and installed win x64 so far it works great. A few compatability issues I am working around.

AAron,

If you are still having trouble with your DVD/HDD detection, make sure that the HDD is on the GRAY connector of the IDE HDD cable; the DVD can go as either a slave device (on the Black connector of the HDD cable) or as a master or slave device on the CD ROM cable. Then ensure IDE0 is enabled in BIOS For the HDD Cable (inserted in the BLUE Plug) and the IDE1 is enabled for the DVD IF it is on the CDROM cable. Also ensure that all the SATA are set 'off' in BIOS. Check the owners manual if you are unsure, all this info is in there....
