I am looking for some confirmations and any thoughts that you may have.

I am about to build the following system:

Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
AMD FX-55
Nvidia GeForce 6800 GT
PC Power & Cooling Turbo-Cool 510 SLI
Aspire X-plorer case
Corsair TwinX 1gig PC3200 DDR 400mhz
NEC 3540A DVD-R/W
Hitachi 160gb SATA-150 harddrive

What BIOS version should I be running?
What is the status of the on-board NIC? What driver/version should I be using? Any problems with it?
What driver version for video card?
What is status of on-board audio? What driver/version should I be using?
Should I update the nvidia chipset?
Any benefit to going to WinXP Pro x64 edition? or just stick with 32bit Pro?

Thank you in advance for the assistance.

Make sure you have that 3rd SATA port disabled under NVRaid in BIOS (just 1 and 2 enabled) and then go into Disk Manager and you should see a third drive. Give it a partition letter in Disk Manager and then format it.

As soon as you disable that third (and fourth) port and reboot you should see the drive in BIOS. Just the actual RAID Array drive ports should be enabled.

I still don't see it. It's not shown under the Main section where it lists the IDE drives and SATA drives. The only thing I can see there is my DVD writer which is IDE. I already disabled the third SATA port under NVRaid, only ports 1 and 2 are enabled now. Could it be a bad drive? Or busted port? I will try switching it to port 4, and then if that doesn't work out, I will try using the Silicon SATA ports.

Thanks for helping me out by the way.

Steve-
Looks like a good system to me. You can overclock that6800GT to 400/1.1 easily and have an ultra. Get two, they're cheap. LOL. In answer to your questions:

What BIOS version should I be running?
- 1013 is the latest and greatest and seems to be very stable and overclockable.

What is the status of the on-board NIC? What driver/version should I be using? Any problems with it?
- I don't use mine but some folks have reported issues with it when used with the built -in Nvidia firewall.

What driver version for video card?
- 77.77 is the latest but I backed off to 77.72. The .77 seems to be a little screwy IMHO.

What is status of on-board audio? What driver/version should I be using?
- OnBoard audio is fine and the chipset driver 6.66 has the Nvidia interface for it. I use headphones predominately though so probably not the best resource on its quality.

Should I update the nvidia chipset?
- Not sure what you mean here.

Any benefit to going to WinXP Pro x64 edition? or just stick with 32bit Pro?
- Your call but I see no reason whatsoever to utilize an unsupported OS that delivers absolutely no performance gain. Wait a year or two till 64 bit matures software/driver-wise.

Make sure you have power to it. ALso, the SATA cable may be bad, change it out. I have had two cables fail on me.

Thanks a lot, you were right on the money. Drive wasn't getting power, I must've loosened the power connection or something. I use a NeoPower 480. :)

Thanks again! Awesome FAQ!

I'm in need of some advice. Here's my current setup:

600W Seasonic PSU SLI ready
3000+ Winnie
2 x 512 Corsair XL 2-2-2-5
evga 6800GT w/ NV silencer 5
2 x 80GB Seagate SATAs in RAID 0

I'm thinking about getting a second 6800GT and 4000+ San Diego chip. Would you if you had the money? This setup is primarily for gaming...

Thanks,
Jared

Jared-
How about you sell the 3000+ and the 1GB of RAM for a good price and get a 3700+ San Diego core, 2GB ( 2 x 1024 GB sticks) of fast RAM and the 6800GT. 3700+ is about $100 less than a 4000+ and I'm sure you could easily overclock it to 2.4GHZ. That $100 would offset the cost of the RAM (if you get a good price for the 1GB).

I too am having problems with the onboard NVIDIA network device. For me, I can't use it at all.

Thanks again to Gerritt and Merc.

For any others who like me didn't know, nothing needs to be turned on or set up to use a SATA drive by itself as a standalone drive, and in fact, the RAID capabilities need to be off for the SATA connection you are using for the drive.

RFT!!!

Merc,

Re. Your question about using a PC Power & Cooling PSU with a Lian Li case. I'm using a Lian Li V1000BW case and an Enermax 600W SLI (EG701AX) PSU, it just fits in the bay provided in the case. I think the PC P&C PSU is slightly bigger than the Enermax, so might foul on the vertical plate between the PSU bay and the intenal HDD bays, but you could remove it quite easily by drilling out any rivets holding it in place.

I'm very happy with the case, but did have to add a fan on the side panel when I was running on air cooling, the GPUs were exhuasing hot air back into the case & I was getting a hot spot around the DVD drive, the extra fan did fix it though.

Hope this helps.

CPUz shows the SPD settings, which are encoded on the little chip onboard the DIMM, under the SPD tabd and the real timings under Memory. You can set the timings under DRAM on the advanced settings page and voltage to the RAM slots under jumperfree.

In BIOS under CPU there is a DRAM tab. Select that and then select 400MHZ, CAS 2, Tras 6T, Trcd 3T, Trp 3T Timing 1T. Under Jumperfree there is a DDR voltage. Set that at 2.7 See if that is stable. Otherwise you can set everything at auto and it will set itself, albeit at very unaggressive timings.

What are your specs? Did you install standoffs before mounting the motherboard? Do you have both the 24 pin power and 4 pin power plugged in?
