>> Re: Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe FAQ
Hi

I'm building a new machine but it has a problem - can anyone out there help me?

1. Machine is stable and runs fine from cold boot but will not boot from reset (fans spin and POST completes but then, as it attempts to load Windows XP Pro 64 bit, the screen goes completely blank).

2. In the BIOS (revision 1016) under the POWER section, ACPI APIC support is greyed out and permanently set to 'Enabled' - it is not possible to change it to Disabled. Is this normal?

3. I am unable to install AI booster. I get 'Error. Fail to install ACPI Driver' when I attempt to do so.

4. I am not overclocking and everything is correctly seated.

5. In Device Manager under Other Devices, 4 devices have yellow question and exclamation marks:
?! Multimedia Audio Controller
?! Other PCI Bridge Device
? SI Pseudo Device SCSI Processor Device (no exclamation mark)
?! Unknown Device (with identity ACPI\ATK0010\1010110)

I don't think the Multimedia Audio Controller and SI Pseudo SCSI Processor Device are significant but I am concerned about 'Other PCI Bridge Device' and 'Unknown Device' which is associated with ACPI.

Could this be an ACPI problem and if so how can I correct it?

Temperatures are fine.

Anyone got any ideas?

Many thanks

Graham

Still having problems here. Not sure if I should shoot myself or the pc......right now its kind of a toss up. It seems I've had power troubles right from the first so I just ordered a Silverstone ST60F 600w, maybe this will cure my troubles!

Graham-
Sounds like there may be a conflict among the 64bit drivers. I recommend that you try and install 32bit XP and get your system running and stable. If that works then you'll know it is a 64 bit problem. if it doesn't change anything then you can troubleshoot from a known baseline.

64 bit windows is not really ready for primetime yet and should be left to those who enjoy debugging software and hardware in a semi-beta state. Vista should improve the 64 bit world when it is released. JMHO

When you download the new raid drivers that Crisao talks about, do you just extract them to a floppy and you're ready to install them or do you have to manually pick and chose which drivers you need and move them to a floppy?

Here's a good one, its so crazy I don't even know how to explain it! I was going to check my drives with a prgram from HItachi but wasn't able to because my controler wasn't listed. So for whatever reason I went into my bios. At the top of the page it has the time listed........at the bottom it has my memory listed, everything inbetween is blank! I went to the other bios pages and the same thing, everything blank except for the place my cursor is at. There are no headings at the top either to tell me what bios page I'm on. Now here's the really funny part! If I scroll down the page the settings become visible but only the one my cursor is on! I've gone back to system defaults, cleared cmos twice, pulled my sound card and one stick of mem, re seated my vid card ,I'm back to barebones and it makes no difference! Any ideas no this? Thanks! Could I have somehow hurt the bios?...would reflashing it help?

just read throughall your old posts. Have you gotten the new PSU installed yet? If not I'd quit playing with the thing till it was in. If you have installed it then we can dismiss power as a problem.

I haven't heard of a BIOS behaving like that and if the power is good then we have to assume that one of your componenets is bad: the mobo, the BIOS chip on the mobo or the CPU.

My new psu should be here anytime. You don't think reflashing the bios would do anything huh?

I'd turn it off, unplug it and put a black cloth and some garlic on top till I installed that new PSU. LOL. Seriously, no use monkeying with it if the power is bad. I thought we.d discussed PSU's early on?

Very many thanks for your rapid response.

I've formatted the drive and installed XP Pro 32 bit with appropriate drivers. Device Manager is now completely clear.

However, the machine is still exhibiting exactly the same problem as before.

The system cold boots perfectly and is absolutely stable but when I do a hard reset or a restart in Windows the POST runs happily - I even get a voice announcing:

"System completed POST. Computer now booting from operating system"

and then it hangs with a blank screen.

Carefully listening to the hard drive on reset and warm boots, immediately after POST I can hear a short burst of activity for about 1 second and then the hard drive falls completely silent.

I have run chkdsk c: /f which has not helped though after one chkdsk c: /f operation I got:

"Disk boot failure. Insert system disk and press enter."

So presumably on hard resets and warm boots the system is unable to find the bootable part on the hard disk.

Do you agree that this is the case and if so why do you think it is able to find the bootable part of the hard disk from cold boots but not from hard resets?

Any ideas?

Many thanks

Graham

Graham-
Is there a firmware upgrade or software patch available for the Maxtor Drives. Just FYI Maxtor drives have had a lot of problems on all NF4 chipset mobos. They have issued software patches in the past and also firmware upgrades. I'd research that. I don't know why Maxtor has this issue and the other drive manufacturers don't but it is what it is. I like Western Digital but that doesn't help you much. LOL So I'd go ahead and check out that aspect of the problem before trying any other fixes.

SB Z,
Your current ASUS BIOS number should showup on screen during the boot process. You may have to look close and fast to spot it as everything flies by. Perhaps using pause key several times will hold it on screen long enough to read.

Now where you can find your current chipset number I do not know. Anyone who does I hope they post.

I often read questions about how to find out your BIOS number. ASUS provides something called ASUS Probe. It's a simple utility which will tell you just about all you need to know. Once installed, launch it from the start menu > Information tab > DMI Explorer > BIOS. Sure beats trying to catch it as it flashes by during bootup ;-) . If you don't like/want the utility, check your BIOS then uninstall it. Chipset is not covered by perhaps nvidea provides something similar?
Or go here http://futuremark.com/products/pcmark05/ and download the basic/free version, run it and look under System/Details/Motherboard. This will also tell you loads you never new about your rig! ;-)

In addition to the above here are a couple of utilities hat are free and you shouldn't be wihout:

1. CPUz: Little executable that will tell you your CPU type, speed and core as well as cache etc. Motherboard make model and BIOS, chipset version etc. Ram speeds both as set and SPD numbers as well as where they're mounted and total available. Find it at http://www.cpuid.com

2. Belarc Advisor: This gives you all kinds of info including, and this is the good part, the certificate numbers and/or activation codes for nearly every piece of software in your rig. Lost your XP activation code? This thing gives it to you. Grab it at http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

My psu wasn't the problem, everything was acting stupid even with the new one. I called Asus last night and they had me do a few things and determined that the mb was defective. I'll bet my old psu was just fine! Anyways I need to get this going as I have very little free time. I can get a A8N32 SLI Deluxe today but don't know much about it except that it has heat pipes on it. Is this a good board and is the setup the same as the a8n sli deluxe? It looks like it uses different drivers.
