It is a much better board. I'd buy it and get a refund on the A8N Deluxe. Too bad we couldn't get it to work but at least you're now a pro on troubleshooting. LOL

Here's a question: What's the latest version awdflash.exe and do I need to to flash to the latest bios? I've got the non-deluxe version of the board and it's latest bios is 1014 and on the download page it says this:

1- Support new CPUs. Please refer to our website at: http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx
2- Update awdflash.exe to v1.15
3- Remove 2.88MB floppy item value

It's the "2- Update awdflash.exe to v1.15" that scares me. On the ASUS website the latest version i can find is 1.09. Any experience with this?
Thanks,
Jared

Hello again, long time no see :D I had read this whole forum back when I first bought my new computer. Now a few months later I've developed a new problem.

While playing Counter Strike Source, the game will randomly die silently and return my system to the desktop. Sometimes the crash is a little more robust and i need to ctrl-alt-del and kill teh process to ge tback to normal operation. Here are my system at runtime:

Hardware:

Asus a8n SLI (obviously)
AMD 64 939 3k (no overclocking, 1.8 GHz)
1GB Corsair Value Ram (kinda crappy, but hasnt failed me yet, and you cant beat $80 for a gig of 2 CL PC3200)
one XFX Nvidia 6600 GT 128 MB (not overclocked, 440 MHz Dram Clk)
approx 1TB Hd space over 5 drives mixed IDE and SATA150
400 Watt generic lame-o PSU.. like 18A on the +12 rail. (but i dont have a high end proc or vid card, so it has been fine so far)

Software:

Windows XP pro corp, stripped version with malware removed (no essentail services are removed. Used many times by many people with no problems, though not with this exact hardware)
Counter Strike : Source, half life two engine
Xfire (text msg in full screen games)
Ventrilo (VOIP)
NVidia Ntune temp monitor
Nvidia Nforce chipset drivers most recent
Nvidia GPU Driver most recent

Bios is vers 1.10, which seemed to work better than 1.07 when i first made my computer, havent changed that yet.

The main suspects so far are my chipset drivers which i have yet to update from the ASUS site. I also see a sound driver whihc other forums have said is known to fix crashes with DirectX and Direct Sound. The crashes occur entirely randomly durrring use. Sometimes I get hours of uptime in CS:S, other times it will crash silently to the desktop after only 30 seconds. This is very troubling as we play in plublic leagues such as CAL, CEVO, OGL, TWL etc. If anyone has any suggestions or other sources the erros might be coming from. Other games such as Battlefield 2, warcraft 3, Fear, Quake 4, unreal tournament 2004, all run fine. It is only source that is having these crashes. I will check back soon!

Thanks in advance,
Andy

Dave and Merc

Many thanks for your replies.

After Merc's post I ordered another SATA II hard drive (this time I've bought a Samsung) though I wouldn't have done so if I'd known about Dave's problem. Anyhow, we'll see whether the Maxtor drive is at fault or not.

Dave - I'm not clear about which drive you boot from - is it PATA or SATA? Also, what have you done to diagnose the cause of the problem? Have you tried booting from other hard drives? Apart from the mobo, our systems have nothing in common so I think that makes it much more likely that the mobo is the cause of the problem.

Although the problem is not severe, I'm very unhappy about installing a faulty motherboard in a brand new machine so I'll change it.

I emailed Asus about this over a week ago but have still not received a reply and I can't see anything about this problem on their website. So it seems as though Asus don't care about supporting their flaky product.

Thanks

Graham

Hello again.

Does it matter if the boot drive is SATA150? Right now my OS is a 10 gig partition on a 320 gig WEstern Digital SATA150 drive. I did this because its faster the older IDE drives that I have. Does this cause any problems or instability?

Thanks,
Andy

Andrew-
No it doesn't matter. Boot OS from your fastest drive. As far as the game dying it could be the game itself. Does the PC behave like this when running any other program. It may also be that "lame ass PSU" sucking wind trying to wind up a TB of HDD's Hook a voltmeter or record the voltage in Asus Probe and run the game. See if you're getting a voltage dip. Remember, each drive can suck up to 30 watts of power so that leaves you with 250 watts for the rest of the system if all the drives are spinning (don't know your configuration).

Hey folks,

Yea I've been wondering about power. I'll try disconnecting the non-oS drives temporarily and see if it fixes it.. I dont think tha tis the case though since in BF2, WC3, URT2004 etc it runs fine under load. Heat is also not the problem, the GPU gets up to 50 C in the harshest gaming and the CPU and chipset hover at about 35. Definitely not a cause of alarm in my book. ANy other ideas?

Thanks,
Andy

I agree since all the drives probably never spin up at the same time. If all your games but one run fine then suspect the game. Find a patch or visit the forum for a fix.

I am thinking about adding two additional drives to my system, utilizing the SI controller.

Currently, my system specs are:

Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
AMD Athlon 64 FX-53 Processor Socket 939
2 Corsair TWINX1024-3200XL 1GB Kit DDR400 XMS3200 Dual-Channel Xtra-Low Latency Memory
2 Western Digital Raptor WD740GD 74GB Serial ATA 10,000RPM Hard Drive w/8MB Buffer (Raid 0)
2 Western Digital Caviar SE WD3200JD 320GB Serial ATA 7200RPM Hard Drive w/8MB Buffer (Raid 1)
Leadtek PX6800GT TDH Geforce 6800GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Sound Card
PC Power & Cooling High-Performance 510 SLI Power Supply

All of the existing drives are on the NVRaid controller. Windows XP SP2 is loaded on the Raptors, which I don't plan on touching.

Would adding 2 additional 320GB drives and moving the 2 existing 320 GB drives to the SI controller be a problem? I'd like to convert the existing Raid 1 array to a Raid 5, so I can utilize more of the space.

Any comments would be welcome.

Hey Again,

I guess it was its time. My OS partition had some files corrupted after one of my system hangs and I had to reformat/reinstall. THis time I'm using a normal version of XP Pro Corp. We'll see how it goes. So far its been on for 24 hours and hasn't crashed, so it looks better than before. I'll let you know if it solves the problems in Counter Strike Source.

Thanks for your help,
Andy

Anyone catch my question on page 237? What version of awdflash.exe did you use to update to the latest bios?

Make sure thatyou are typing the file name exactly as it appears on the floppy or the dowload. In other words "awdflash a8nsd016.bin". a8nsd016 is the file name as dowloaded and loaded on the floppy and awdflash will look for whatecver you tell it and if the match isn't exact then no dice.

If you have the Asus flash program use that and tell it to look to the file where your BIOS revision is rather than on the web (that never works).

Make sure you use captal letters and small case letters as applicable.

Use a new floopy disk.
