With Michael's permission I'd like to post a link to our Asus Independent Forum. It deals strictly with Asus mobo issues, with emphasis on the A8N series, and is a much better tool than this thread (I have probably 300+ posts on this thread so I should know).

We made the forum because tech support for the A8N series is so lacking. This now way too long thread is probably the best source of info out there but has become to unwieldy to be of any real use. AI fills the gap.

Registration is easy and there are a bunch of good guys there to help. Just follow the link.

Alex,

I've had an almost identical thing happen to a 4 disk raid-5 array using the Sil3114 controller. In the bios 2 of the 4 disks are labeled "invalid raid" and 2 are labled "reserved disks"

My disks are 4 months old and haven't been under significant load so i can't believe they have failed. Have you achieved any solution?

Will

I'm about to de-SLI my A8N Deluxe from SLI MSI 6600 128MB GT to a single eVGA 256-P2-N584-AR GF 7900GT 256MB and I was wondering if there are any procedures that I need to read up on.

I posted a question here: http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/63480/ about what are proper installation of this card.

Thanks in advance

Yeah - I reinstalled Windows...I had to trash the RAID and set it back up again. And I can't use the nVidia RAID, as it can't do RAID5 :(

1. Remove the old cards
2. Flip the SLI selector card (located between the two PCIe x16 slots) to single card mode. This is described in the manual.
3. Install the new card
4. You're done

RAID 5 support has been added to NForce 4 SLI for AMD in later driver revisions. Update your NVraid drivers, and you will get the option to create (bootable) RAID-5 arrays.

thank you sir!
last question, do I keep the 4-pin EZ plug PS connector to the motherboard (used to power SLI) ?'
Thanks in advance!

It might not be strictly needed, but I see no reason to remove it. I would guess that it can still help with power delivery, even in a non-SLI configuration. It will surely do no harm.

I am having problems with RAID. The nvraidman does not show(and never showed) the drives attached to the system. The raid works fine, but i have no way of knowing if a drive has failed, if it needs repair, etc. Also I have an icon on the tray showing the two drives(the same one that shows if insert a flash disk on a usb port). I have installed the latest drivers from nvidia and the latest bios. The array is a mirror set, and it is bootable.

Here are my computer specs:

AMD Athlon XP 2400+
512 MB PC3200 DDR
ASUS A8N-SLI

Western Digital 320 GB sata HDD x 2

Windows 2000 Server

Thank you for your help.

Can you see the RAID array in the NVraid BIOS?

How does the device manager show your array? You should have something like this:

Disk drives
NVIDIA MIRROR 320G
SCSI and RAID controllers
NVIDIA nForce(tm) RAID Class Controller
NVIDIA nForce4 Serial ATA RAID Controller

<<under device manager:>>
DISK DRIVES
nvidia mirror 298.09g

<<Under driver tab for Disk Drives>>
Nvidia Mirror 298.09G Microsoft Corporation - 14/11/1999 - 5.0.2183.1

SCSI and RAID Controllers
NVIDIA nForce(tm) Raid class controller
NVIDIA nforce4 Serial ATA RAID Controller
NVIDIA nforce4 Serial ATA RAID Controller

<<Under driver tab for sata raid and raid class controller>>
NVIDIA CORPORATION - 24/4/2006 - 5.10.2600.666

Any clues???

Thanks in advance for your time

No, sorry. :(

I'm running Windows XP and so have newer versions of the Microsoft drivers - but that should have no effect. My NVidia drivers are the same version.

Your NVraid BIOS however is quite old - I'm running 5.60. Of course you would think it would work anyway, but that might be something to try. Is it a vanilla A8N SLI you're running?

Can you see the drives in the device manager under "NVIDIA nforce4 Serial ATA RAID Controller" and then "Primary/Secondary Channel"?

Yes I can see both drives 1 in primary and 1 in secondary channel

You also wrote..."Is it a vanilla A8N SLI you're running?"

if this helps it is an ASUS A8N SLI, as it is stamped on the motherboard, with one graphics card on the pci express slot.

If you recall the problem is, that i disconnected one of the drives while the machine was running and i got no warning, no error, NOTHING. Ofcource when I rebooted the bios said about a degraded array and I rebuilded. As you can understand, if a situation like this arises in the server it could be fatal for the data.

Where can i get a newer NVraid Bios?

Thanks again

It just matters for which BIOS version you need.

Yeah, that's of course unacceptable. RAID-1 with no failure notification is as useful as a spaghetti seatbelt.

I put one up for you here: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=13942&view=fi...p;p=137196

No guarantees that it will work for you of course.

You may have some sort of installation problem with Mediashield. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling it? A fresh Windows install might help, but of course that's not something you want to do just for the fun of it.

Have you asked Asus?

Tried that(the new bios for raid), but still no change.
Am I the only one experiencing this problem? I wonder

It prolly has already been said in one of the 300 pages. But:

Are the usb ports for this mobo meant to be giving power after computer shuts down??

mine does. So all my power sub harddrives still spin after i shut it off. rather anoying.

Any options or anything that i could of done in my end to make this an error?

I have had the same problems, power, fans, DVD drive, but no boot. Hangs at Press DEL to enter Setup screen.

I have tried everything I can find. Bought New PS, clearing CMOS, "unlocking board". I think I am down to replacing Video Card or MB.

System ran fine for a year, no upgrades, rebooted. No power, reset CMOS to deafult and cleard CMOS- booted to "ALI" screen but still nothing. Swapped memory, changed memory slots- same.
MOved video card XFX 6600GT removed, rebooted, booted without RAm, with RAM, with 1 stick, with no sticks. (Geil memory)- remember ran for a year with this.
POST gives one beep.
