>> Re: Asus A8N-SLI FAQ
Hey guys I'm back. I just installed my new PC Power and Cooling PSU earlier today and it appears as though my lock-up isssues are gone. I did notice that my 12v line jumps between 11.71 and 11.77 volts but she seems to be stable with no lock ups. However, I still cannot get my OCZ Patinum EL rev 2 ram to work in dual channel mode. It will run memtest for hours with zero errors and I checked the sticks with CPU-z and this time around they are indeed a matched pair. It works just fine in slots B1 and A2 but will not POST or boot in slots A1 and B1 (the blue ones). The monitor will not come out of sleep mode. All bios settings are as posted in the first page of the FAQ. I also tried leaving all Dram settings to auto and switching the monitor connector to all four DVI outs. I am not OC'ing at this time with the exception of tuning my graphics performance as suggested in Mike's earlier post. I am using 66.93 GPU drivers, bios final 1004, and chipset rev. 6.39. This is my last issue with this system and it is still perplexing me. I think I should maybe relax my memory timings but the default is DDR 333 at 2-3-3-5 . Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

P.S. Anyone need a new Antec Neopwer 480 PSU (LOL)

No problems here, I would just turn screensaver off for now. :)

Try backing off your GPU Core another 5 MHz and Memory Core .02

Kevin what are you trying to run the memory at.

I can't get anything but DDR333 to work....it runs at 232.9Mhz on a 300FSB with 2-3-3-5 timings.

There is something flaky in the bios with the dividers or how the chipset sees the ram.

A.D. , I have not tried to specify any settings in the BIOS as of yet. I was hoping to get some suggestions.
It will run just fine at 2-3-3-5 DDR 400 in single channel mode with FSB at 201Mhz. Dual channel is still dead though! LOL

Try this in the BIOS!

DDR 400 MHz and (333 MHz as suggested by Darkened)
CAS# Latency 3.0
RAS# to CAS# 3
RAS# Precharge 3
Cycle time Tras 8
Bank Cycle Time Trc 11
Dram Idler Time 16

See if it fires up with these settings.

Just got through trying those settings but no joy. I did try the monitor in all four DVI outs . Dual channel RAM is old technology isn't it? Why won't she work??? (LOL)

Made a stupid mistake and installed the NV SW IDE drivers off the cd instead of the 6.39 latest...I don't have any IDE problems now and transfer speeds are a little better.

Thanks for the help guys. Just FYI I have already RMA'd this motherboard and my RAM because of this issue. The motherboard (same one I put a small mark on the side of the CPU socket with a felt tip pen lol ) came back with no explanation. This original set of RAM I had was mismatched and that was causing my previous "system failed memory test" error code. I thought for sure the new ram would work. Oh well, at least I have a Mb of single channel DDR 400 high dollar ram. Should have bought the cheap stuff it would probably work. I'm not giving up yet. I thought maybe it was a voltage prob but I've tried auto, 2.7,2.75 and 2.8. Thanks again for the help.

>> Re: Asus A8N-SLI FAQ
I've solved my problem. Per Sander's suggestion, I ran Prime95 and it rebooted within minutes. I took the memory out and put in a stick of Corsair Value Select PC2100 256MB. No problems. Prime95 ran fine, as well as 3dMark. I took that memory out and put in one stick of my Twinx1024-3200C2Pro. It worked fine. I put in both sticks in slots A2 and B2 (the manual says only put two sticks into A1 and B1). It worked fine. I put the two sticks in A1 and B1, and it worked fine.

Lesson learned. If you are having problems with stability, lay your computer flat and remove and re-install your memory sticks. Make sure the clips click shut. Do not install your memory with the case standing up. You cannot get them installed properly that way, or at least, you have a better chance of getting them installed correctly when it is laying flat.

Thanks for your help Sander!

well heres an update:
last nite ran rthdribl for a bit of a stress test on the system and woke up this morning to my ups alarm going off, and the overheat light on(computer was off). Turned off the ups, and waited a few minutes, nothing seemed hot, so turned on ups and my power supply made a huge bang, and spit a bunch of crud and smoke out the back fan of the psu. WoW!! (scared the cat to death almost). Searched around town and found a 680w thermaltake psu,(and a another raptor) hooked it up, and am back up running. Ive ran this stress test before overnight with no problems, temps were running about 80-85(according to nvidia drivers). i updated the bios yesterday to 1004 final, but doubt that was the problem. A little thing with this new psu is it has 2 pci-e plugs for the video cards, but they dont fit(their website says to let them know you have the psu and they will send you adapters(weird). After a bit of a mod to the plugs i got them to fit ok. Im not sure what happened that caused the ups to overheat, and the psu to go bang. I dont think airflow is a problem with the cm stacker case(4-120mm fans, 4-80mm fans, and the cross flow). The old psu worked fine for about three weeks, maybe just a bum psu(i would still buy enermax)
It sure is not boring dealing with this system, between some small install problems, tweaking, trying different drivers and bioses, and the occasional small explosion, its keeping me on my toes. Im actually having fun.

Kevin Estes

Can you go into your system information and highlight info under memory and send it in a PM to me? Another thing I would do is take an aerosol contact and circuit board cleaner to all the DIMMS, get close and personal with the straw type nozzle and blast away!
Oh, and you did try Mike Yi's suggestion right?
I put in both sticks in slots A2 and B2 (the manual says only put two sticks into A1 and B1).

>> Re: Asus A8N-SLI FAQ unable to boot
Hi all,

I'm having a really strange problem with my new rig.

First off, the specs:

Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe mobo
AMD 3500+ 90
Corsair PC3200XLPRO 2x512
WD Raptor 36.7GB 10,000rpm x2
XFX 6600GT PCIx (one)
Ultra X-Connect 500w psu
20 - 24 pin power cable
Sony dual layer DVD RW
Gatewatch Areocoll LCD Fan Controller/Temp Monitor
Stuffed in a Mountain Mods U2-UFO Case

Initial build was smooth as gravy. Used stock cpu heatsink/fan, hd's in raid 0 on Silicon controller, more cooler master fans than you can shake a stick at (5 120's, 3 80's).
Installed Win XP Pro, misc updated drivers, updated to SP2, installed Office, updated, then a few games. Ran X2 the Threat at 125 fps on benchmark. No overclocking enabled, was waiting to see stability, LOL. Everything ran great for about 3 days. As I was checking email in outlook, lovely pop-up box said a dll had a problem and had to close. I have kicked myself repeatedly for not writing it down. Anywho, I clicked OK, and whamo, system powered off.

Tried to re-boot, got BSOD unmountable_boot_volume.
Tried Safe Mode, got BSOD cdfs.sys.
Tried Recovery Console, got BSOD ntfs.sys.
Tried Repair Install, no option, just a nice request to format.
Ran memtest for about 12 hours, no errors found, heat about 36C.
Tried New IDE HD, fresh install of XP, on install reboot get unable to boot os.
Tried unplugging all unnecessary, (at this point), items: raid drives, fan controllers, same error, won't complete XP install.
Tried old HD with "Me" on it, can boot into safe mode! Don't know what good that did me, but it booted, LOL.
Tested Raptors with WD disk test, NPF.
Tested with various apps on ultimate recovery cd a friend loaned me, NPF.

/cry
I'm tapped out, any suggestions?

thanks mike, for the recommendations ...

i went back to trying to install windows xp (all other tests with a working system were done under windows 2000 sp4). i now have a windows xp cd with integrated sp2, and still had the copy problem on my plextor drive. However it couldn't copy a different file first (com..something) and then iexplore.

I switched to an older CD-Writer (40x CD speed but still 4 times slower than the plextor drive) and got the same file copy error.

I am now trying it with another DVD drive (old model, can't read any DVD+R, only "originals") and also underclocked my system in Bios, let's see if that helps.

did you (or anyone else) happen to run accross the "unable to copy file from CD" error during installation of windows xp, and if so, how did you overcome it?

please note that i already tried the following:
installed from 3 windows xp pro CDs (2 originals with SP1 included, one self-made with SP2)
installed on 2 (currently third test with third drive in progress) different DVD/CD drives
disabled SATA in Bios as the only HD is a 200 GB IDE drive from Maxtor, with the primary partition set to 8 GB

any more tips? i am running out of options and i don't even have the slightest clue on what to try next ... :(

HI everyone.

I have been looking into the "IRQ LESS OR NOT EQUAL" problem.

As I understand this is a driver problem of the 1394 Netadapter, or the
Nvidia Nforce Networking Controller. I tryed to change the driver for the NNNController
back to older verion 4.6.4.0. But it did not help.
Changes in the bootfile did not help either.

I found out by using the Marvell Yukon Controller and disable the 1394 Controller,
that this problem would go away.

Still it does not solve the problem, but could help out in the meantime.
If someone know how to solve this? It would be great to get a good example how to fix this,
since there seem to be a frequent problem.

Remi Holm
