I have a brand new Asus P4PE motherboard with a P4 2.4 Ghz processor, 512 MB DDR RAM 2700, 64MB MSI Nvidia Geforce4 MX440 graphics card, onboard sound and am having the following problem:

I cannot get my computer to start after it is shut down for an extended period of time (more than a couple hours). I press the front power button and the fan whirls, the CR Rom light turns green and then the computer hangs. No POST beep - nothing. I can only get it to start only by pushing the reset button from the hang then it starts normally one beep, loads the bios screen, and then the OS. If I shut down and then start the computer again within 5 minutes of shutdown the computer starts normally and does not hang. What can I do to fix this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the exact same problem with new ASUS P4PE loaded with 2.4 GHz P4, 512MB, Radeon 9500 Pro, Creative Audigy 2 Soundblaster, Antec 430W PS, 2 HDD, CDRW, 4 fans. If it's cold, it hangs and needs a push of reset button to get going. From then on, it works perfectly until it's been off a few hours. I also get a voice message everytime I power up (no matter what temp) that says "No CPU installed" twice. Weird.

There are many people suffering from the same.

See the Forums on:

No adequate solution yet.

Latest revision of the board is 1.03A check that ..
Bios latest: 1003.006 beta ...
Also people from Asus suggested problems with the powersupply.
No way !!
CPU problem ?? No way ..
Memory problem ?? No way ..

Dodgy board ??? I think it is ...

My advise ..if you can return it, do so and ask for the latest revision,
if that does not help, buy an Epox board with the PE chipset.
I surely will do that ...
A pitty because when it runs it is rock stable ...

Welcome on board !!!

I had the same problems and tried everything !!

- both power connections on the board (12V CPU and molex) no effect ..
- beta bios 1003.006 no effect ...
- disconnecting everything that could stress the 12 V line (fans, lights) no effect ..
- re-installing CPU no effect ..
- clearing CMOS no effect ...

Last friday I returned the board to the reseller and he knows that if I return a board it must be dodgy.
I got a new one (also revision 1.03) but with bios 1002 pre-installed (first board came with 1001).
I have had no problem whatsoever yet, but maybe it is still to soon.
It works fine now for 5 days.

I suggest you do the same, because as you can see on all the forums there is no solution yet and
Asus said they can't reproduce the error in their laboratory !!

They can get my old board !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe you can swap the board too, it will take only a little time to do this, if you install the same
type again you will have no problems with the operating software.

Good luck ...

RON

Same problems here:

The ASUS P4PE and Intel P4 processor combo worked fine for the 1st week. Now I'm lucky if the computer starts at all.... NO POST.... I tried 5 times to start the computer today (I made a video of it... gonna show the store tomorrow) and each time it failed with the message, "System failed CPU test"

I don't know if the problem is the CPU or the board... I figure if a CPU was bad that it would be bad ALL THE TIME... it shouldn't work one minute and not the next.... what the hell?

Usually my computer won't start after it's been off all night.... and it's DAMN cold in my basement... only 16 degrees Celcius...

I'm lost.... I have a 431W Enermax power supply... P4 533FSB processor..... three western digital hard drives (no raid config).... and an ASUS V8420 video card....

I know what's going to happen.... I'm going to take the P4PE into the store tomorrow and they'll test it and it will work just fine.... just like it worked THIS time... or I wouldn't be typing this f*** email!

Oh yeah... and here are my OTHER problems:

My ASUS V8420 fan has bad bearings.... fan makes a squealing noise....

My first motherboard (I still have it) was the ASUS P4S533... The SIS chipset was having difficulty with my hard drives.... EVERY time I boot up, I would get a message saying that my drives need to be checked for consistency.... what a load of crap... the problem went away when I purchased the P4PE (at least this chipset follows standards), but now I have a boot problem.... what a load ofs**t....

My next board will be an INTEL D845PEBT2. I just want something goddamn stable and good toll free support over the phone so that I can stay productive and not have to worry about my hardware configuration....

What's up with the asusnetq.com.tw website? I can NEVER bring it up.... seems like the site is always down... anyone else have this problem?

I want to read more about the P4PE failure to boot problem.

I think Asus uses a P4PE board for the server too ...

That must be the reason that the forum is always down ...

For all those who still struggle with this board, return it to the reseller and
tell him about all the forums that are discussing this problem.

It shows that it are not the CPU, memory or power supplies but the damned board itself.

My second board works fine now for two weeks now.
I'll keep my fingers crossed ...

Yup, seems like everyone has this problem with the p4pe. Previously I had the privelage of owning the piece of crap sis648 based asus p4s8x. The board didnt like my radeon 9700pro, so i went out and purchased the p4pe, thinking it should be a stable board since its based on the proven 845 chipset. As im sure you can probably guess, the system would not start at all!! I tried everything... Changed the ram, hardrive, video card and so on. I kept all installed chardware at the minimum, so there was less troubleshooting. So, I had 1 module of 256MB Crucial ram, a Maxtor 60BG drive, and an older radeon 64MB video card. Still, no luck. At that time I realized that the CPU could be at fault. So I ripped off the stock intel thermal compound tape off the heatsink, cleaned the CPU and heatsink really well, reapplied some thermal compound, installed the CPU and that solved the problem for me. If you choose to do this, remember to apply the thermal compoud correctly, it makes a lot of difference. My cpu runs at 25 degrees now and the bootup problem dissapeared. Quite a story eh! Hope this helps.

Specs;

P4 2.4B
Asus P4PE -L
Crucial 2x256MB
Radeon 9700Pro

This could be a solution, I tried everything you did and also connecting
the optional molex power on the MB.
So the 12V CPU line and the molex, no effect ...
As told before, I got the board replaced by the reseller.
I use watercooling (Innovatek) and naturally I had to re-apply the themal
paste on the CPU again.
I did that already very carefully the first time, but maybe I applied more of the paste the second time.
The board is now running perfect for 3 weeks now, not one hickup.
My brother in law has the same board and he started with no problems, but now after 3 months he is beginning to get problems ...
So I am not sure I am in the clear now !!!
I still think it is a bad batch from Asus.
They can't re-produce the errors in their labs, maybe they do not have the
early releases of the board anymore and are the latest boards OK ..
I still advise people who can get a replacement from their reseller to do so.
You have at least a better chance than trying infinite to solve it at your own.

Ok, I hope you will stay " error free" after your thermalpaste change.

Good luck

RON

>> Re: Problem with ASUS P4PE (hangs on a cold start: shutdown > couple hours)
I don't understand how using a thermal paste would solve a failure to boot problem such as this one.... it just doesn't make ANY sense to me.... You're booting up... the damn system is COLD...... the ambient temperature in my basement is about 15 degrees celcius in the early morning so naturally ALL the components are at 15 degrees when they boot..... thermal paste or no thermal paste, I don't recall INTEL saying I need to go out and apply thermal paste to my CPU.

All the solutions I've read so far are too flaky.... just like the board....

Why does the board re-boot OK EVERYTIME..... I NEVER had a problem re-booting my machine....

Why does the board re-boot OK after being OFF for 10 to 15 minutes?

How come it's only after it's been OFF for a while (like in my case, overnight) that it doesn't start?

That's bullshit.... I feel like I'm running an old car that has problems starting, but that runs fine after it's warmed up....

I bought an INTEL D845PEBT2 board today.... I'm doing my own trouble-shooting (at significant cost, mind you) because I can't afford to be down while ASUS jerks around and pretends to fix their crappy board....

I'll let everyone know if the failure to boot problem persists with the INTEL board....

Thanks for your assistance.

The only thing I can think of, is that the CPU gets hot very fast ...
I checked that, after a few seconds you can not keep your finger on it.
Without good contact with the cooler it results in a overclocking diagnose
of the board.
So maybe the amount of thermalpaste could play a role in that.

But you are also right when you say that after switching on and off a couple off times it boots.
I had the same.

But again I have no problems anymore with my second board.
I hope it stays that way.
I sincerely hope that all " victims" of this board get to know finally what was causing the error on this board.
But Asus is not so polite to explain anything.
Look at their bios updates, you can get it for free, but don't ask what it fixes.
If this board starts giving problems again, I will buy the Epox with the PE chipset and try my luck with this board.

I'm posting my findings on a few forums, so I apologize if this is a repeat for you.

I'm not claiming a solution here, but perhaps someone can forward my findings to ASUS so that they can try it out on the test board.

I've had cold boot problems for 3 months now... I only looked into it about a month ago when it started p**sing me off.

During the last 4 weeks, my computer would need anywhere from 3 to 4 "restarts" to successfully POST (I here a beep and away she goes). THIS WOULD HAPPEN EVERY MORNING (every morning for the last 4 weeks).

Someone suggested the problem might be related to PSU or CPU fan monitoring, so......

In the "Hardware Monitor" screen of the BIOS, I disabled the Q-fan control

Here are my settings:

MB Temperature: Monitoring
CPU Temperature: Monitoring
POWER Temperature: N/A
Q-fan control: Disabled
CPU fan speed: Monitoring
Chassis fan speed: N/A
Power fan speed: Monitoring
and the rest, you all know....

Damn thing cold-booted fine this morning, so I shut it down and cold-booted again after 4 hours. Booted OK again.

That's two good cold boots in a row, which is a fricken' miracle for me.

I'll keep everyone posted on the # of successful continuous cold-boots.

BTW, I have an Enermax 431W power supply. It bothered me that the ATX connector feels cheap - the female pins inside move around too much.... doesn't seem to be very rigid. If I move the wires, then this moves the female pins and so I've had problems aligning the ATX connector to the motherboard. Does anyone else notice the same thing? Are all power supply ATX connectors cheap?

Please help. Thanks.

Im new to using this motherboard. I was having a startup error involving the Power Fan. So i tried updating the bios to see if that would help. I updated the bios to 1002 (using the LiveUpdate windows utility) and now the OS(winXP) wont boot up and I get a disk read error on startup. Is this a related issue? In either case, does anyone have any advice? It was working fine before i tried this update. Thanks!

Don't use the ASUS liveupdate utility.... in fact, DON'T use ANY ASUS automatic update feature.... they don't work because they (Asus) don't know what they're doing. Always try and find the BIOS and driver updates yourself. You probably flashed the wrong BIOS into your computer and now it won't start. I hope you saved your earlier BIOS version... flash it back again using the FLASH.EXE program....

I did the same damn thing for my graphics card (Asus V8420)... automatic update gave me some f**** up drivers that screwed up my display... so I got the latest drivers right from the Nvidia web site...

My Q-fan has been disabled since I got my board. I haven't had any problems starting my computer. Try disabling it, might help.

I do have an audio problem. I have the onboard sound option and anytime I play games the sound breaks up. I've downloaded the latest driver from asus, the latest soundmax download, direct x9. Nothing has helped.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Others are experiencing problems with the P4PE onboard sound as well. In their case, the sound craps out when they overclock the board. This is a known issue. You should go to asusboards.com for updates.

I wish I could help guys. My last pc that I finished was an Asus P4PE. I've had no problems with this board what so ever.

Asus p4pe
2.4 P4
256 DDR 2700
Gf4 mx420

Runs like a Porsche, too bad its not mine or I'd try to recreate the problem.

Hello, I have had my asus p4pe desktop board for about 3 days now... It runs with intel 2.53, ati radeon all in wonder, 512 mb 2700 ddr. It cold boots just fine but I have no audio. None! I have instaled the latest SoundMAX program and drivers, but still no sound. My onboard microphone works but not the onboard sound. I have it turned on in bios, the latest drivers and good speakers, what is wrong? I even tried head phones. If you have the cpu frequency set manually would it think it was overclocked? I have read of some overclocking audio issues. I am going to set it to auto right now, if it works I will update you. But please if anyone has had simaler problems and know the fix or even possible fix please drop me a line- Thanks, Thomas Bruzee- <br> tombruzee@tombruzee.com

I was having the same problems on day 2 of building this system.
It was saying something about the CPU voltage or something and I needed to set it to 130 from 133
Then I reinstalled the CPU and it was fine for about 3 or 4 weeks
Then yesterday it started again
It was giving me the error (During the last boot up your system hung for improper frequency combinations)
Now it won’t boot at all.
I tried reinstalling the CPU, unplugging the power, pulling the battery, booting from a start up disc, reinstalling the CPU again with out the heat tape on the heat sink, holding the power button with the battery out and the power cord pulled and nothing
It’s a Intel 2.4B, P4PE, 3-512 sticks of PC2700DDR MSI’s GForce4200 4x
I seen that some of you stated that you used your reset button to get it to boot but mine reset never worked Is that what I might be missing to get it to get to the BIOS’s??????
This is the first time I built one and I read a few reviews on this board and they were all good.
Now after a afternoon of searching P4PE boot problems I think this board sould have been pull from the shelves a long time ago

Dave, I think a part of your problem may be with your ram. You mentioned that you use 3 modules... If you look in the board manual, it mentions some f**ked up method of installing ram. I think you can only use 2 modules in some bizare specific order. See if that can help.

Adam
