Hi, I cannot seem to use remote desktop connection to connect to a specific IP or address from this computer. I went to another computer and it works fine, what could be wrong??

could be a hardware or software firewall blocking the connection.
Are you sure you have opened up the relevant ports?

Is there a possibility that you could be behind a router or something that would block your outgoing ports. If so then I think you also need to setup port forwarding on the router or some other kind of firewall.

Why don't you elaborate more on what kind of stup you have, like the remote machine you want to connect to, how it is setup(router, firewall) and also the setup of the machine that actually connects to the remote desktop, then maybe we can make something out of that.

the server is running windows 2000 server, through a sonicwall firewall. The other office remote users computer is running xp pro. There is a DLink 8 port VPN router in the remote office. We have Alltel DSL. Is that enough? or is there something specific that I didnt mention? Thanks for your help :)

So are you trying to connect to the server or the other office user? Also is the other office user on the same router as you or on a different router? or a different WAN all together?

the office with the server is in Atlanta, the remote office is Athens (georgia). The remote user is behind the Dlink vpn router.

the user is trying to get from his computer in Athens, to the server in Atlanta. He is on a totally different WAN.

its like this

Atlanta is the main office, it has all the servers and applications

Athens is a remote office, it wants to use remote desktop connection to connect to one of the servers to get information.

Athens has the dlink router.

Sorry for the long silence, couldn't get time to get back with you!

Ok now has the remote user setup the proper ports and port forwarding? Remote desktop uses port#3389 both TCP and UDP so make sure that is set to be forwarded to the remote user on the dlink router. To find out more about port forwarding and instructions on how to do it can be found here:
http://www.portforward.com
Also make sure that the firewall has been set to allow connections on that same port.
Another thing to check is does the remote user have an account on the server? And is that account allowed access to connect to remote user? I'm not sure how to do it on windows 2003 server but in XP you can right click on My Computer>Properties and go to the Remote Tab and select the Remote users button to enter the remote users add/edit section

These are the things i can think of now, why don't you check on them and get back with the update.
If it still doesn't work then we can think of other options to try.
