Hello, I need some help.

I try to connect a laptop with a crosscable on a pc.
The cable works because on both sides I see a green light.

The laptop runs win98se and the pc runs winnt.

Is there an easy way to connect?
I tried a lot of different settings but nothing worked, (but I don't know very much of computers)

Hey Erik,

what you need to do first is give both the computers the same workgroup name such as 'HOME' or 'MYNETWORK', it doesnt really matter as long as they are both the same, right click my computer, go to properties and u should be able to change the workgroup name there.

then u need to assign each of the computers an I.P address in the network properties, u should be able to go to network in the control panel.

e.g:
-Windows 98 PC - 192.168.0.1
-WINNT PC - 192.168.0.2

after u have added the I.P addresses ping the computers from each PC and see if u get a response, if u get a response they should be right to go.

hope it works mate, cheers.

Mark

Thanx for your replie Mark I try it this evening..

Yesterday I tried something else of http://www.support.microsoft.com/kb/q258717/

I followed all the steps but it didn't work

-both pc have :client for microsoft/ file&printer sharing/ netbeui/ ipxspx/ tcpip/

- both pc's have the same workgroupname (WORKGROUP) the same username/the same pc name and the same (blank) passwords.

-both search automatically for IPadresses

Do you see what i forgot or what I did wrong?

hey,

make sure you assign both pc's an I.P address, for the windows 98 machine give it the I.P: 192.168.0.1 and for the Windows NT machine give it: 192.168.0.2.

if you have the same workgroup name it should not be a problem.

once u have assigned them I.P's go to the windows 98 machines command prompt and type: ping 192.168.0.2, if u get a reply it means they are networked, if u dont there is a fault some where.

here dude, this site gives a simply description of wut u need to do: http://www.makeitsimple.com/how-to/simple.htm.

good luck with it.

cheers,

Mark

It almost work, with ping they see eachother.

I use my winnt pc as a host, it's sending but don't receive anything.

When I open internet on my win98 pc (internet isn't connected)then the winnt recieves.

I tried to change the LAN setting in internet options, but didn't work.

What can I do now?

I'm assuming that you're trying to connect the two computers to share Internet? Or do you also want to enable File Sharing?

Well assuming you want Internet...then you need Internet Sharing(this is included in XP and maybe 2000 but not previous windows like 98 and NT)
But you can use a program like AnalogX Proxy which you can find here:
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,6759,00.asp
(Copy paste the link)
For file sharing, you have to enable file sharing first before you'll be able to see the files.
Check to see if you can see the host computer from the 98se computer by going to Network Neighbourhood and displaying entire network...If you can that means the computers are communicating

Hey,

if u can get a ping response, then they are networked :)

If the internet works on NT but not on 98, u may need to run an internet sharing program or something on NT, i know windows XP has an internet sharing program that worked for me.

changing the LAN settings wont help it, it may make the matter worse, keep reading up on peer to peer networking, ive never networked a NT and 98 machine, and i havent used either OS in along time.

cheers,

Mark
