Problem issue with my CD-ROM and DVR-R - both where working fine - all of of a sudden; XP Windows is unable to locate the darn things!. My BIOS sees them - so I know they are both setup correclty!. One master the other slave. They were F: and G: drives - now none show up!. What gives?. This happened right after the new Security D/L from Microsoft on SP2 came about!. Now I am unable to access either CD or DVD - I tried to uninstall from Device Manager and XP see it and ads the drivers - but still doesn't work.
CD is: - SAMSUNG CD-ROM 152G C400 and I downloaded the Drivers from DriverGuide.com. The DVD-R is listed as a : Generic DVD-R 8xMax. Reinstalls drivers - but both show up on Hardware Devices with a Yellow Exclamation Point - which indicates wrong drivers. When I review Event viewer - says registry issues with code 19!. I have no clues as to what that is - tried looking it up on Microsoft - says its not HW issue - Driver issues - so I D/L updated drivers - but still no go! Even tried disconnecting from HW board and reboot - and reinstall - same error!. I show no viruses - AVG sees none - Spyware / Malware sees nothing! is it not on my machine!. So what gives? Anyone out there got the same issues?. I am about to reinstall XP (with Repair Option - but I am not too sure that will fix the issue!). I am no expert at redoing the registry and I do not like to mess with it!. I've looked everywhere for it in registry - but be darn if I can identifie it!. Anyone? no KB's showing on any of this problems!. I am about to shoot this darn computer and put it out of its misery!. (let alone mine!). LOL!. Appreciate an email: posejc@yahoo.com for any info.

Thanks!.

Did you try uninstalling the update from Microsoft?

I am trying to do that - but I do not know which one is the culprit and/or which one is causing the issue.
I may have to uninstall each one at a time and see if that does the trick. But I am more opting on reinstalling XP Pro - even though that would be a pain!. I have a backup copy on DVD that I made - so I am not too concerned about files and the such - I usually backup weekly - so all I will loose is just one weeks worth of work!. That doesn't bother me too much!. I use this system primarily for the internet usage anyways - and doing work in Excel and Word which I backup daily if not weekly!. I just ran MSBA - and it did not find anything unusual. I ran a DDoS program and found nothing. Scanning ports with Superscan - nothing unusual!. I got this thing fairly closed up tight! with XP Firewal installed and AVG running in background!. So in short - will continue to delete d/l MS files and see what comes up!. Thanks for your advise!. Will keep posting as I go!.
Later!.

Did that!. The latest driver was from DriverGuide.com. However its still not being recognized by XP! for some odd reason!. I am at my wits ends on trying to resolve this issue. Its not going to win!. Without the ability to read my CD-ROM its kind of a mute point! However; I do have everything backed up! so thats not an issue. And I can reboot to the DOS /BIOS and reinstall XP! - which to me is a pain the butt! - but it may be the only way I can get this issue resolved. I am no expert at looking at the registry and find out what code 19 is - are there or is there anyone out there that can lead me to the promise land and find out what that code means! and how to get around it!. Short of having to reinstall the OS!. I'd rather find a fix - then take the short cut and reinstall XP (with having to re-register with Microsoft! again!) - I hope to find the fix to this - with you help - thanks you all!. Keeping on! keeping on!.

Microsoft says:
Code 19

Your registry may be bad. (Code 19)

To check your registry, click Check Registry. If the registry is bad, Windows will restart your system and go back to a previous registry that is good.

Solution button: Check Registry

This code means that the registry returned an unknown result.

To resolve this issue, follow the recommended solution, which will run Scanreg.exe. If this does not resolve the issue, type "scanreg /restore" (without quotation marks) from a command prompt. Finally, remove the device from Device Manager, and then redetect it using the Add New Hardware tool in Control Panel.

It's a registry problem seen this with both Nero & Roxio after updating Windows! You will need to locate 2 keys in the registry and delete them!

Start Registry Editor - Go to Start-->Run, type the word, regedit

Locate the UpperFilters & LowerFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Before we start you will want to back up this entry! To do this highlight the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} Now go up to, File and select Export, enter any name you want any will do and save it where you can find it, desktop is th best for now!

Now were going to delete 2 entrys within {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Highlight {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and look on the right for the entry, "UpperFilters", right click on it and select delete! Now do the same for LowerFilters!

Now scan for New Hardware or Reboot!

Remember that you should backup your registry or export what your changing, before editing it! Better safe than sorry!

Sorry, should have added that this is a compatability problm with your burning software!

Seen this problem when you update to Service Pack 1 or 2 and your burning software is no longer supported! Seen it with both Nero and Roxio and this fix worked for both!

Updating your buring software won't fix the problem, if it's already broken!

Many thanks for the fix !!!! Hopefully it worked for others as well. Although I had not installed any new hardware all 3 of my roms(cd/cd-rw/dvd-rw) disappeared for no apparent reason and had gone through everything possible to remedy the situation---what was mentioned here did the trick. Thanks again!

I really appreciate your solution, Drizzit - I didn't have "upper filters" - but I did delete "lower filters", doing just as you said (backup etc.) and my Drive D has now reappeared and is working fine. Thanks to your help, I am no longer in panic and stressed-out.

BTW,
There is a HUGE FUBAR with Roxio EZ CD Creator 6.0 and XP SP2!
IT blew out all of my Symantec Software and REMAPPED ALL OF MY DRIVES!
I've only had this problem upon reinstalling the Roxio suit after XP SP2.
My system partition mappings are C: (System) D: (Data) and P: (Programs) and F: (DVDRW).
Roxio, upon installation changed all the drive letters to be DOS compiant primary drive C: second drive D: etc, so D: became E:, P: became D: etc.

Sooo, Symantec products lost their keys on restart, and refused to recognize the authentication/activation after reconfig of the drive mappings. I had to purchace an upgrade and got another shipped from Symantec after spending two weeks trying to get the suites reinstalled. Had to get the shipped product as the online downloads would not work, even after stripping the applications and registry entries; Invalid A8Key errors to the "xl" licensing servers in Australia for the downloaded "digital river" packages.

Just an FYI to all of you that have or are planning to reinstall EZCDC 6.0, install it prior to XP2 or ANY Symantec product.

Thanks alot drizzit. Haven't had my roms working in a month. Followed your instructions and in 3 minutes bam. Instant on. Thanks again. I didn't think that since I don't use those two burning software products that this would work. I was Wrong.

Thanks

Thanks for the help Dizzit!. I sent you an email - seem we may have crossed path on the MSE circuit!. LOL!.
So far I have had only one issue with that particular problem and fixed it!. I have all latest updates from Microsoft and its seems to be holding!. I have another issue right now - my new employer is a Wi-Fi ISP provider and one of this customer (a lawyer) got his system infected with 6 Trojan horses!. I know which ones they are since AVG identified them and EZPatch program seen them - I went to Safe Mode in XP Pro - and deleted the files - but they keep reappearing after reboot - so its staying resident somewheres! probable cause is the registry - this is kind of funny - cause the virus makes him go to a Porno Site and puts a real cool picture on his desktop!. But I am sure he is not laughing!. I am!. But in anycase!. I have tried McAfee - Norton, AVG - it all sees them - but cannot remove even though it says it did!. I am certain that if his system is infected - so are the other people on his network. Do you or anyone have a Free Trojan Removal Program out there I can use!?. I just started this work - and I have not received my check yet!. So I can't really get or purchase a program to do the removal - there are many - even though they are cheap - I still can't pay for any of them!. Anyone has some info? Please email me: posejc@yahoo.com. Thanks.

Try turning off system restore then back on - probable home for the wee bug is the safe and non-virus scanned system restore files - remember that turning it off then off will delete all restore points aswell as any bugs!

shane snyder,
What software for your burner are you using and what version is it? Try to go to their site and see if they have any updates for your software! Try the updates first, if that doesn't work, uninstall it then reinstall and update it! Some of the older version software won't reinstall, because it's no longer supported since Service Pack 2 and some since SP1!

Jose,
Like said, turn off system restore and leave it off!

Download Ad-aware SE Personal , Spybot S&D 1.3, MS-Anti spyware beta, install and update them!

Now boot into safe mode (F8 at startup) and run them all! Run AVG in safe mode also! Also download Stinger and VCleaner!

If it's a downloader one of the spyware tools should find it, as they tend to be labled as spyware first, then a virus! If this doen't work and give me the name of the file and where it's located!

Also HiJackThis is a good program for finding crap in the reg. give it a try, be careful with it though if you delete something you need you may not boot up! If you don't know what it is do a google search for it!

Hope this helps!
