Al James Feb 18, 2005, 05:51am EST Report Abuse
I aquired an old win 98se PC for nothing from a friend. All he gave me was the WIn 98se discs which I performed a clean reformat of the c drive. That went smoothly and the PC itself is working fine excpet I can only get 640/480 screen resolution with only 2/16 colours.

I know this computer is capable of 1024/768 and 16 million colours as that was what it was like before I reformatted (it did need reformatting as it had so much rubbish on it).

So, with no other installation discs, how can I get this to operate on higher res/colour? Is there a new driver I can download?

Please can someone point me in the right direction as I want to give the old Win98 pc to my cousin who has downs syndrome and it would brighten up her day...but hopefully with more than 16 colours on the screen.

Hope to hear from someone.

Thanks

Al James

Go to lavalys.com and download Everest Home Edition for free. Open the program and click on motherboard. Then click on chipset. Write down the name of the chipset and go to the chipset makers site and download the chipset drivers and install them. then go to display and click on Windows Video (I'm assuming the graphics are onboard). Write down the display adapter and go to the makers site and download the drivers. If you have problems or need help post back with the chipset and graphics info.

If that doesnt help you, Is the computer a name brand, if so, What is the make and model? If not you will need to take the video card out and look on the card for any identifing marks for make and model of video card. You can even look up the part on http://www.driversguide.com using the FCC number found on the card, although that usually just gives you the company that made the card, not model. Once, you have the make and model you can get drivers from companys web site or web site, I listed early.

Supermicro X6DA8-G
Antec True 550 EPS12V
Dual Intel 2.8 Xeon's with 800 FSB & EMT64
1 GB 2700 DDR
ATI AIW X600 Pro 256 MB PciExpress
ATI Remote Wonder 2
2 IBM Ultrastar 36XP (LVD) SCSI Hard Drives

My apologies for not coming back sooner.

My problem is fixed thanks to your advice, I got the intel 80 series chipset drivers which contained the audio drivers and VGA drivers. Working just fine now thanks.

I appreciate your and other peoples help with this.

Whoopie! Chalk up another success for the good guys. Thanks for posting back. With the older Intel chipsets, if you want to, you may want to download the Intel Application Accelerator. It replaces some of the Windows drivers with updated tech, speeding up the system. Not a lot, but noticeable. Then again maybe you should leave well enough alone.I have 4 systems here with 98SE on them. and they all have IAA on them.

I have read the forum and I have the same problem. I have just recently installed the Win98SE on my Dell Inspiron 3000 laptop and i have the same problem which is I can only get 640/480 screen resolution with only 2/16 colours. I have tried one of the replies which is download Everest Home Edition and downloaded the chipset drivers and installed them. But when I went to Display and clicked Windows Video, there is no maker's site in it. It just displayed the device description which is Standard PCI Graphic Adapter (VGA) and the installed Driver which is vga.drv .How am i supposed to know which site i will download and what is the correct driver to download?

You need to download the video driver for your laptop from DELL. "NeoMagic NM2160" Find the driver and download it here.

K, so I installed the download you recommended and it did all these things to the hardware/software, said it was getting new hardware/software etc....but....it did absolutely nothing. There are no changes... What should I do now?

how about a mobo maker and model number or brand and model of computer, or running Everest Home to get more info on the driver. Or go to control panel system/device manager/display adapter/driver, and get the adapter specs off of there.
