The only sure fire way of not getting this message is to not buy a Gateway Tablet in the first place.

Assuming like me you have, and assuming like me something nasty has happended to it, then you are going to use the Gateway recovery disk and you have got the message.

So what to do?

I have been through all the usual suspect of creating a boot disk and using the attrib command, and this doesn't always work. As many out there might have found.

Heres the sure fire way of fixing the problem. It needs a little Linux/Unix experience but it's fairly intuituive (I hope)

Download a copy of Knoppix (http://www.knoppix.org/)

You only need the CD version for system recovery, and believe me this has made my life soooooo much easier. I recommend everyone has one of these in their toolbox.

Boot the Knoppix CD you create from the ISO download. (Use Nero or Barts CD)

This will automatically load the hard disk as /media/sda1

Open a terminal session and issue an su command. There is no password so you will get placed straight in as root.

type umount /dev/sda1

This will unmount the hard disk.

type mount -t ntfs /dev/sda1 /media/sda1

This will mount the disk

Then put a USR pen, or FAT formatted USB drive into the USB slot.

If a popup box appears asking you what to do select "Do nothing"

Then in the terminal session type

mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /media/sdb1

This mounts the Media stick or USB drive

then type

cp /media/sda1/ntldr /media/sdb1

then type

rm /media/sda1/ntldtr

Respond yes to the question "do you want to delete blah bblah blah"

then type

cp /media/sdb1/ntldr /media/sda1

This copies the uncompressed ntldr (it's uncompressed because you can't have a compressed file on a VFAT partition) back to NTFS.

As Knoppix wont compress the file unless you say so, it doesn't.

Shutdown Knoppix, remove the CD & USB Device and reboot.

Works everytime.

I get the following error message everytime my pc reboots "NTLDR is Compressed" Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart. It keeps repeating itself everytime I reboot. When hitting any key to boot from CD is just bypasses and I get the same result over and over. How can I get the pc to boot manually in order to fix the problem?

I was able to into the Recovery System from the CD and it installed it, but it only runs Recovery setup to install new OS. It want allow me to boot from A:\ OR E:\Drive by hitting any key.

The brand is "emachines"

I followed the steps below, but they did not work

I boot to the recovery console follow these steps:
1. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer. Click(or press any key), but it did not respond to my pressing the key

I would like to keep all of my data from backup, but It appears that I have to perform a FULL Restore without saving all data.

What do I do from here???

Is it the e-machine recovery disk, or a regular XP Home CD with the copper holographic face? See if you can get into Safe Mode with command prompt by pressing F8 continually when it starts booting It takes you to the boot choice window. Either safe mode with command prompt or last known good config. If you have a regular XP CD forget all that and just post back, I'll tell you how to do a repair install without using the recovery console and saving all your data.

It only recognize F2 & F10, it doesn't recognize F8. When I put the Recovery CD in the CD ROM it doesn't recognize that either, but I was able to install the System Recovery CD on the machine prior to it crashing. If I press F11 or R the System Recovery Console appears. I don't have a Windows XP Home CD available. What else can I do? I need all the help I can get here. I don't want to lose all of my data.

If it's the E machine CD then you're gonna lose everything. It doesn't have any repair options. Do any of those F keys get you into the safe mode choice screen? Right now what I would suggest is to take out your hard drive set the jumper to slave and attach it to the computer you're using to write this. Pull off all the files then put it back in and reinstall windows. If you can get into safe mode with command prompt you might be able to start system restore and try to set the system back to an earlier date. Or you can start the system file checker which will replace the corrupted system files.

Are you sure F8 doesn't work? Continue tapping on it don't hold it down. If you get to a black screen that asks if you want to boot windows XP, hit F8 one more time to take you back to the safe mode options.
