Hello, i have a compaq presario 2100 laptop(1.8ghz, celeron)

i was using it one day, left it to eat lunch, and when i returned it had turned off and no lights were on. I figured it was just a dead battery, but when i plugged it in, the freen LED on the power supply blinked on and off, and no power lights lit up on the computer. I opened the computer and check the DC port and it seemed to be working just fine.

I've searched around on the net a little bit and it seems that6 this is a problem that happens more frequently then it should.

Has this happened to any of you and does anyone know how to fix it?

Overheating, Random shutdowns, and other problems are common on these.. (Athlon model)? CPU is probably toast as well as a couple FET's in the circuit. If you need a free asessment give us a buzz. We repair a ton of these as well.

Actually, it's in a whole lot of peices right now, i took the whole thing apart, and when i tried to plug it back in again. and one of the diodes finally gave up the ghost.it actually burst into tiny flames and burnt itself out. anwyays, sufficit to say, the circuit pretty much burrned itself off the board. now, the computer will turn on, and i get signal on the screen and everything. The only problem now is that when it tries to load the operating system off the harddrive, it crashes. i know the harddrive is good because i've tried it in another computer and could see everything in it.

Also, i was wondering if there are any board diagrams that would tell me what the diode is that burned off.

Many thanks for any help!

What Diode? And the general location? If you can read the D-## Send this as well.. Which board? Mobile or Athlon? These are a different design..

You'll never beleive it but after that diode went out in flames, the computer turned on and i haven't had any problems since! i'm using it right now! i dunno what it did, but apparently it wasn't that important.

thanks for all the replys!

I'd love to tell you which diode it was, but unfortunately there's not enough left to recognize. it. If i had a picture of the mother board i might be able to point out the diode.

>> Re: Compaq Presario 2100 won't power on, won't do anything??
I have a similar, although slightly different problem with my Presario 2100. It doesn't matter whether I attempt to power up with just the battery, just the AC adaptor, or both the AC adaptor and battery installed. When I hit the power button it lights up along with the 3 indicator lights next to it, as well as the wireless networking light. WIthin about 1/2 second I see the HD activity light come on briefly, it stays on for maybe another 1/2 second then goes out. I hear a click or two coming from the CDROM drive, and about a second later the whole thing powers down. (the whole sequence from button push to power down lasts maybe 3 seconds...) I managed to coax the CDROM drive open during one of these attempted power on sequences and with it hanging open it no longer clicks, but the failure to power up still persists. I put my ear against the bottom of the unit, right up against the hard drive and tried powering up... I can hear the HD spin up, I hear the heads seeking (obviously while the HD light is on) and then, after that second, everything shuts down. I thought I should mention that the the last time I shut down before this problem surfaced I used the hibernate option, kind of my typical modus operandi. The computer came pre-loaded with XP Pro and I occasionally do a complete shut down, but most times I just hibernate it. Additionally, I get the same result with the power if I press the reset button on the bottom of the computer. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I use this laptop in my business which is run primarily out of my Town Car. I have a laptop mount up front (like the ones they use in police cars) and I power the laptop and a 4 port USB hub with a RS 300w inverter. I typically pull the inverter prior to starting the vehicle, but confess that I haven't done that 100% of the time. My business partner never unplugs anything with his Vaio & the same inverter, and he has no problems whatsoever. Everything has been fine with my setup for the last couple of months... I've had no prior indications of any sort of problems. I really need to get this solved quickly, as without my laptop I'm out of business. (I'm a mobile loan closer and print doc packages on an HP2430 in the trunk that runs off a separate 2000 watt inverter.) Please help... I'll really appreciate it. TIA

My Presario 2100US powers on itself all by itself at random times. It started this a few months after I had it and the Compaq support guy said "try re-installing the operating system"!!!!

I thought I could live with this but its a royal pain in the butt as I have been caught with a dead battery because I forgot to unplug the battery and the power the night before after charging. I suspect it has to do with heat as it always powers back on after I shut it off after using it awhile; yet, sometimes I can plug the battery back in and the power and let it charge only to come back later to find it myseteriously turned itself on after 10 minutes or so.

Compaq SUCKS!!! HPQ SUCKS!!!! They SELL CRAP and DO NOT HONOR THEIR PRODUCTS!!!!!!!!!

Issues eh?? Weve seen these as well. "Self starting and surf while you sleep machines"..We will see a ton of these really soon. Theyre our primary repair and are following the same path as the junk 700 (presario) series. (And they were junk). Sorry to anyone that purchased one of these athlon hot-box's.. (Mobiles actually a better board). If anybody needs help on the 2100/2500 Compaqs.. HP 4000/5000 series just give us an email or call. We are in this for the long haul and would be more than happy to save you at least 300.00 as opposed to send to the manufacturer for repairs.

These can be purchased off eBay dirt cheap.. If you are in the states we can send one also but you most likely do not need to replace it just resolder the contacts.. These really arent suited for the power consumption and heat generated in the supply line.(Small pins/contacts).. They tend to open a joint sooner or later.

I have a Presario 2100 that has been getting really hot lately and I was beginning to worry about adverse effects, I talked to my uncle (computer wiz but deals mostly with networking) and he said it was no big deal after it was on for ten minutes. I have had it get so hot that I could not rest my hands on it. It has always been elevated from day 1 to protect my desk (made of wood the heat from computers dries out the wood and causes it to shrink resulting in the wood splitting) what can I do to prevent the catastrophe that everyone seems to be experiencing? I am entering college this Sept and there is no way I can afford a new computer. I'm a lifeguard and for all the glory the pay sucks. Is there any way to prevent this?
