What are your specs?

EDIT: Can you boot into safe mode? Did it ever boot?

Kyle ....this is your second post on this subject and for some reason you will not give any information, I want to help you as dose all of these people.....but you have to tell us in the best way you know how what is exactly happening, so we can make educated and reasonable decisions to help you out. All we know is that you are freezing at start up...you seem to think in a different post that it is your HD, we contend that this is not the case....boiling it down we need more info on what is exactly going on.

specs means the specifications of your computer. Like what hardware and parts you have...

like the processor, processor speed, how much RAM, video memory, how much HD space and stuff like that.

Had a problem like that before it turned ot the PSU was not doing its job, but try to get into safe mode first, you could also try a repair install and if that does not work you could try a fresh install of windows incase it is a software problem..

Kyle...Sounds like more of a software problem rather than a hardward problem. Do this, turn on you computer again and as it boots up press the F8 key. This if done right, may take a couple of tries will bring up a option window, select boot in safe mode and hit enter. What this will do is boot using only the min. of required drivers, and it will tell us if the hard drive is good or not. If the system boots to windows come back and we will go from there.

I need help with this problem as well. My mother bought a used machine and it freezes at various times. Either once windows has started or sometimes during startup. Its running windows 2000. It has PIII, 512MB, and 30 GB hard drive. (This may be unrelated, but the color display only goes up to 16 colors). I tried starting it in safe mode with and without networking but it still froze. Incase it was a software problem I started installing the W2000 Service Packs, but I've only gotten up to SP1.

and let use know.
Press F8 during startup.

I didn't quite understand what I was suppose to do/see, but here's what I got. I started the computer and when I got to the black starting windows screen I pressed F8. I was then given several options including:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA Mode
Last Known Good Configuration
Directory Services Restore Mode
Debugging Mode
Boot Normally

I chose Debugging Mode, but it didn't list anything... it went stright to the windows logo screen. Then it went to the dialog/status box and then to the desktop. (It doesn't always freeze on startup only sometimes. But it always freezes during startup or after its been used for a couple of minutes.)

It eventually froze and after I restarted I got a message on a bright blue screen it was exactly the following:
Post Startup Error(s)
The following error(s) were detected when the system started.
183 System security - Adminstartor password required. Select one of the followinf:
Continue
Exit Setup

I chose continue and it took me to the regular setup menu... any ideas?

I don't know why you got those error but I will check them out. The reason it freezes may be that the system or processor is over heating. I would remove the side cover and place a fan to blow into the system.
Also verify that the CPU fan is working. It may also be causing problems with her video card.
Thy that and let me know.

I opened the casing to check to see if the fans were working. Its an IBM NetVista casing; there are three fans. One positioned at the front of the unit, one small fan inside that points upwards, and another large one connected to the back of the unit. They were all running, but the computer which had been off for serveral hours (at least 10) still froze on startup. Is it possible for a comp to heat up that quickly? Would it help if I posted some of the Event Log errors here? Thanks.

It is possible for it to heat up that quickly but I am starting to think there may be another problem.
Please post the error that would help me alot. I notice in one of your posts that after the 183 error it siad continue for setup. Is the setup as in the bios or windows 2000 setup? beacuse I think that error code has something to do with installing windows.

The menu that appeared was the same one that I get when I press F1 from the IBM screen (which is the first screen that appears when I turn on the computer). The F1 option is labeled Congfiguration/Setup and the Menu that appears is titled Configuration/Setup Utility. Some of the options are System Summary, Product Data, Devices and IO Ports... Exit Setup...

So the computer automatically loads the bios. That is usually caused by hardware problems. You could try this
somewere in those pages there will be a setting call load default or load failsafeor setting or something like that
try it and press F10 save changes then reboot. let me know

mmm... it dosen't automatically go to bios on startup... I meant to say that the first screen I see is the IBM screen from which I can go to bios. I only got that error (183 System security) after I chose debugging mode and then restarted. Should I still try load default?

I have found that computers that stop working(freeze up) are almost always due to a hardware problem. You're particular issue sounds like a bum motherboard. You could try to install windows 98 or 95 if you have them, and see if they work better, if so suspect MB. Just a thought. Good luck and let us know if you fix it.

You have to use 'enable VGA mode'

I've had this problem before, and that solved it until I could install newer drivers for the video card.
