>> Re: Someone really smart help! My computer freezes at windows xp startup!
I am having a similar problem with my computer.
It is a:

Athalon XP 1800+
256 MB Ram
280 GB Hard drives (1-200 (C:), 1-80 (D:))
Radeon 9200 Pro 128 MB Video Card
Soltek motherboard, dont know much about it

The computer was working somewhat ok before christmas, freezing, but not really more then normal. I got the new 200 GB hard drive for christmas, reformated and installed Windows XP Pro onto it and made it the C drive. Then after I got that working, the computer decided not to turn on. I had had a faulty power supply for some time that I had to turn this switch on and off a couple times to get it to work, but now that wasnt even helping, so I got a new 420 Watt power supply, and put that in.

Now when I try to turn on the computer it makes it to the windows logo when its starting to start up, and then freezes, with you barely being able to see the logo on the screen (faded). If I restart, sometimes it brings me to the list of load up options, and I can choose safemode or safemode with networking and it starts loading a long list of files and freezes at the one saying "mup" (Im on my other computer now, I can get the exact file if it will help) So then I have to restart again, usually to just get the faded windows logo. Sometimes I can get windows to finally load, but it will eventually freeze. Sometimes during game play (Diablo or Counter Strike) sometimes just during regular use of files and folders.

I am really indecisive whether the problem lies with my motherboard, video card (Which has the most recent drivers) or my RAM, or maybe even my new hard drive (Stupid UPS left it out in the cold while I was gone home for christmas, I found it when I got back a couple days later)

Anyways, if anyone has any ideas or suggestions, I would really appreciate it! Thanks!! :)

I am having same problem exact same freezing on startup though mine freezes after it is on for a while if i restart it freezes if its first thing in morning but if its on for a while it freezes on restart which indicates to me an overheating problem - i have moved the side panel and opened window for ventalation into it - hope this works.

how do you enable vga mode?

It is quite possible that you are all suffering from similar problems. I could say without a shadow of doubt that all your problems are hardware related as the guys suggested.

Lockups on start up usually point to a RAM or CPU error. However, if it was ram, I would have expected you to experience BSOD (blue screens of death) at some point, with a fatal exception error or something similar.

Can you all please go into your BIOS and check the temps of your CPU, and also the voltage to your RAM and CPU.

Do any of you have your machines OC'd?

Have any of you tried putting different RAM in to see if that resolves the issue?

Tasha Gee - Did you make sure the jumpers on the hard drives are properly set?

Have any of you tried to format and reinstall the OS?

I have re-installed O/S twice with no joy. and changed the main HDD and swapped RAM so i am sooo sure that my Problem is the CPU Overheating- if i go into BIOS and check temps how do i knwo if the reading is correct or if its over heating.

For a start you could let us know what temp it reads!!! LMAO

Have you locked the PCI bus? (there should be something in BIOS that says PCI Clock or something similar)

NP!! LMAO

They are farenheit yeah??? 'cause they're nice and low if their right. How's your power supply?
Try maybe doing the usual and taking out all components bar the essential(ram, CPU, hard drive, vid card), and see if the probloem persists.

The way it happens at different times, not just on startup would suggest either overheating or a dud PSU imo.

Well - it seems to be fine just now WEIRD and i havent changed any setting apart from one in BIOS which was Enabled PCI devices - if i get anymore problems i think i am going to buy XP Pro and re-install a new OS and see if that helps.

remove the ROM you installed. if windows works after that. then you should check the jumpers on the ROM.

The problem reported previously is couse by BIOS and Windows xp SP2 cincompatibility. Update BIOS and it will work fine.
