brian you are wrong, there is some but they are buggy and only work with certain versions. I tried one but i am from the UK so the high pings and buggy servers got annoying. I'm now waiting for guild wars because i believe monthly fee's are wrong

I dont mind the fee, the only real problem I have with it is that I cant got out and get another MMORPG like Everquest 2 as I would need to pay for each of them and if you have 3 of them you could be talking about £25 a month, the good thing about it is you play online with other people and the game has a point, I am a big fan of CS and play it a lot but you basically go round in a circle 1 wins and the round restarts at the same place whereas with WOW there is a quest or mission to do.

>> Re: World Of Warcraft private servers
wlk, where is this private server, and how would I play on it?

I SERIOUSLY doubt it exists, as the WoW servers handle everything from auction houses to mail to NPC characters to quests and chat and aerials/boats and more.
The game you own knows nothing of what is on those servers - it only allows you to connect to them and communicate.

Someone would have to STEAL Blizzard's code to make a private server work.

Even then it would be impossible to get it running properly.

Any private server would be crap, and any private server that actually worked well would be under heavy legal assault from Blizzard.

Here's one guy
http://www.createblog.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=58958

He claims he got the whole source code for the game and recompiled it, and he claims Blizzard took him to court twice, and HE won.
Bulls**t.

You can look all over the net (google world of warcraft private server) and you'll get a lot of talk about it, but not much real info.

The point is that it's
1: Very illegal, and Blizzard won't stand for it
2: Nearly impossible to get it working right
3: Not worth the time and effort

Blizzard has millions of dollars worth of server.
Some jackass who stole source code and runs a crippled non-functional server on his P4 box with a cable connection can host about 3 or 4 people.

I will go on record as saying that as long as WoW is popular, there will never be a stable, functioning private server. Especially not a free one.

Besides a FREE server, or free MMORPGs, will lack the money required to keep the game maintained and updated. New Content is going to be added a lot more slowly and updates, would be far an inbetween. And I can only imagine that if a MMORPG didnt have a monthly fee, all Updates/patches/expansions would be sold via retail for a higher price. Its that monthly fee that keeps the game maintained and updated.

You want a "free" MMORPG, go MUDD or play a game like Neverwinter Nights, which was designed for PEOPLE to keep the new content comming on their own time and $$$.

I play Final Fantasy XI for $13.95us/m because I like the game, if I didnt I wouldnt pay or play it. Now if the game had no further development or added content, due to it haveing no monthly fee, over 1/2 of the people who do play, wouldnt.

If he did have a private server it would probally be like the 1s for GTA:San Andreas online, I got the All seeing eye and went on 1, I said to someone what do I do they told me just walk about and that was that you couldnt do anything except go in cars, so it was pretty lame.

Ahh, Actually just most games..... not all games are worthy of taking the time to program a server, or are not worth it to play with a low (-500) server load.......like FFXI XD

the current WoW realm im on must have at least 4000 people on at a time. Its recently started being really laggy though and blizzard are doing feck all about it. Annoying really seeing as they are more than willing to take your money! i've cancelled my subscription untill its sorted.

You cant get the game experience from 70 people being online...

a raid on my current realm has over 200 alliance fighting 200horde all in seperate raid groups, thats what the game is about!

Personaly I would rather just give Blizzard the £8:99 a month and be guarnteed a good server, you don't know how long these private servers are going to be up for and things like that at least with Blizzard you know when you log in it will be there, and also I went into 1 of the private WOW servers and it was deserted and laggy as hell.
