Can this be correct? A friend of mine gave me his 2 year old ATI Radeon 9500pro 128mb AGP x4/8 card. I have used ATI in the past (7200 & 8500 128mb) but usually stuck with NVidia. I knew about the DX 9.0 issue with the FX cards (after I bought it) but thought oh well live and learn.

Well to my surprise I slapped in this 9500pro to see if there was any differences and whoa! HL2 looked better (in the water area) then i did some benchmarks with 3DMark 2003 and thats where I was really surprised! My FX5900xt card scored 5589 which is not bad, but the card was also overclocked to 467/756mhz with 128mb DDR 2.2ns ram. Well when I ran the 9500pro it came in lower of course but still hit 3987 and that was at stock speed! (270/276x2=552mhz) I would hate to see what this card would do if I OC'd it.

I also ran it with Silent Hunter III, and it ran fine with no hitches. Damn if I didnt need the vivo of my FX card I would sell it and look for a 9800xt or something.

Are 9500pro's really good cards? I figured since they got to be old school (the 9600pro,xt are older now)that it would not be that great. What a surprise!

The 9500 Pro has 8 pipelines, where the 5900XT has only 4, but can process 2 pixels each clock per pipe, so in essence 8... the 9500 makes HL2 look better because HL2 recognizes ATi 9x00 hardware and forces pixel and vertex shader versions 2.0, where as the FX series perform poorly in 2.0, it forces more DIrect X 8.1 features/quality... a la pixel/vertex shaders 1.1 and 1.4... worse looking.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info, and yes that clears up alot. The more I read on the FX cards the more I think they are nothing more than jacked up Geforce 4ti's ! I still like my FX for games (in DX8.1 I guess) and Vivo, but my next purchase may just be an ATI, I was looking at the Geforce 6600GT but now I am not too sure.

467/756mhz....not a very high 5900xt OC comapred to alot others....even oc'ed that 9500 pro wouldnt be that good....the main reason was cuz hl2 was designed ofr the radeon series....pixel shader is a very important part of hl2's design so whilst 9500 pro runs at full quality...5900xt is bumped down...although this does mean the 5900xt does get higher frame rates in most cases....

This was a mistake acrossthe entire FX series....poor pixel shader performance and poor pure dx9.0 performance....the 9500 and 9700 cards were ahead of their time and still churn out good resutls nowadays...

if you were considering a gefroce 6 before? still consider it now...Nvidia has made a big changes since then.....geforce 6 and above perform almost identically to their radeon counterparts (x700 pro anyone :P)....nvidias even furthur ahead in the shader department too now :P

geforce 6 runs in full quality just like your 9500 pro in case you were wondering :D

To put it into perspective....the 9800xt and x700 pro get whupped by the 6600 gt....though if you looking for a new card id recommend looking at either the 6800 and above or the x800 and above....

Here i go again ..lol with my BFG FX5900 story...loli had a fx5900 fx
flashed it with a380 bios also known as the leadtek 5950ultra.And this card ran every thing. And i see that Payton has a stock fx5900xt that gets 6800 in 3dmark03.Ok i got 6902 one time and 6500 like clock work. Then i got a 256bit 128mb 9800se softmodded it and hated it.Yeah the 9800se did look better in some games and certain area's but i still liked the 5900.if your looking for a new card dont get the 6800nu its a good card but the 6800GT's are better and cheap now so i would say get the GT.Youwill be much happier if only because when you see bench marks your scores will be right there.Unlike my nu were as i have to OC the shiit out of it.

yeah i think i would go with the 6800GT now even if it was AGP or pci-e.Only reason for the 6800GT in pci-e though is it will hold more value because of SLI compatibility

Hey TF what do you think of this should i get this when i wuild a 64 bit system

Wow man thats teh heavy artiller....if i were gonna get an athlon 64 system hat wasnt passive...id go for:

in order of risk involved with ME

silent boost k8 (good for what it is)
pipe101 (with a fan of your choice)
sonic tower (witha a BIG fan)
big typhoon

theyre all good coolers just have to decide what size and price youre comfortable with....if the size and 100% reliance on heatpipes is ok by you then by all means go for the big typhoon....personally i go for pipe 101 cuz i know ill be clumsy or something and break the typhoon....

Thanks for all the feedback! I know I have not OC'd the FX to perhaps its max, but it does very well even at normal settings in all games I play. (Rome total War, Battle for Middle Earth, HLF2, etc) The ATI 9500pro really surprised me though since the card/gpu is rather dated. In HLF2 in looked great (actually alittle better overall than the FX) And other games it looked and ran very well.

And I am still considering the GF 6600gt but am going to wait another 2-3 months. Maybe by then the 6800gt's will be ALOT cheaper!)

The 9500 and 9700 series were awesome. anyone who bought one when they came out still has good cards today (especially the 9700Pro owners). With some watercooling and heavy OCing, there is really no reason to upgrade from them yet.

9500pro is just a chopped down 9700pro (128bit mem vs 256bit) which is just a slightly slower 9800rpo...which is bascially almost a 6600gt so you pretty much have a low mid range card by today's standards...

The 5900xt isn't as fast as a lot of people say, good to hear you noticed the image quality difference aswell!

i'm still runniing a 9500 non pro with the softmod, and i'm more than happy with its performance in games such as hl2 and doom 3 so i dont think i'll upgrade unless it burns up

http://www.refl3x.co.uk/files/omg.JPG

had my 9500 with L shaped memory (256bit) and unlocked pipelines (omega softmod). Was running 400 core, 350 memory (700 equivilant).

had a VGA Artic Cooling silencer on it with an additional 2 fans.

Large ramsinks with a fan pointing at them (120mm fan)

overclocked like a beast and running stupidly hot. Had my CPU @ 3200+ with 1Gb DDR400 on my A7N8X-X board.

ah i see,
well this score was at stock, but i have had the card up to 400MHz before and the ram upto 300MHz,
Unfortunatly i dont have the L shaped memory so the bus width is holding me back
but it still plays games like halo, far cry and hl2 just fine with the softmod
