i have a brand new nec 9100a 40x/10x/40x cd burner. i have the newest version of nero and it clearly states on the website that the version supports my cd burner. i am using phlips 48x 80 minute cd rs.
the top speed that it burns at however, is only 32x. whats up with this? should i try a different program? different cdrs? whats up?

you may need a Firmware update for your cd burner to burn at max speed. I have heard of this happening.

Depends on whether the drive is a CAV (constant angular velocity) or CRV (constant radial velocity) drive. CAV drives maintain the same disc speed irrespective of where the read/write head is. CRV drives spin at a constant speed, so at the outside of the disc it's travelling faster than the inside (e.g. when the head is near the outside, it covers ~35cm every rotation; at the inside, it only covers ~15cm).

So, although your drive is rated as 50x, it may only be able to achieve this at the outside of the disc and nowhere else. It's basically just a marketing ploy.

Have a look at http://www.benchmarkhq.ru/english.html?/be_mm.html

There are some programs here to test your drive's speed.

its 40x not 50x

also, ive noticed that i have ALOT more options when choosing burn speed (such as 2-40, all even numbers) but once i put in my cdr's, it cuts down my options, including the 40x option.

maybe its the cd-r?

Without going into a great deal of detail, there are basically two different types of cdr media, dependant on the dye used. Check out the Memorex website. One type is good at slow burn speeds, no good fast, the other not good slow, good fast. If the media is detected correctly by your software the options will be limited to those suitable for that media. Its not a question of quality, more of type.

Check what kind of media you are using. I had the same problem when I bought music media, it only burned at 12x, but when I purchased regular CD-R media it burned at 40x.

The Jake.
You really bought music media? Did you feel suckered when you found out all you had done was pay royalties to the mega rich music industry? I suppose someone's got to put food on their plates!

I have a Liteon 48x12x48, and Nero 5.5.10.0, and I can burn at 48 speed if the media type is recognised. The advice to shop around for blanks is good.

wyatt:
I take exception to your post for the following reasons:

It may be acceptable in the U.S.A. to belittle a persons misfortune in being mentally retarded, but here in the U.K. we do not consider an unfortunate disability to be fair game for mockery.

There is a blank cd media available specifically for recording proffesional audio compilations on which a fee is paid on purchase and forwarded to the music industry by way of royalties. The implication in the posting was that this was the type of media purchased.

I have not yet come across any other post on this site which sets out to insult either the person making the original post, or anyone replying to a post. If the Forum were to degenerate to such levels I would remove it from my listings.

In short, sir, you appear to have let the side down.

Dave,
The type of media I bought was memorex music cd-r. I was unaware of such royalties. Does that stand true in the US also? I have never heard of that idea and I was in computer sales to. That is why I was wondering if it held true in the US also. Please let me know.

PS
You have to take what some people say with a grain of salt. I worked with developmentally delayed adults and they were some of the most proud individuals I have ever met.
