I got a few angry emails from registered users complaining about my use of the f-word, so my question to you is whether any of you found it particularly offensive?

Offensive? No. Unprofessional? Yes.

F-bombs, and cursing in general, is a touchy subject. I've spent time in numerous athletic leagues, covering everything from 'da hood' to the minor leagues. I've been in a bunch of environments, from docks & warehouses to offices, military training facilities to prim-&-proper culinary establishments. I've seen salty dock hands use nothing but vanilla Oxford english, and really watch their words... while I've seen starched-collar women in a corporate office drop F-bombs like a dog sheds hairs. My take is, I don't think it's a matter of offensiveness...

It sure doesn't show your professionalness, though. Sander, you guys run a really good ship here, and it's become very well respected. With that respect comes responsibility... I'm sure you already know all this... yadda yadda yadda. It seems kinda sketchy and unprofessional when a moderator/admin posts a thread with an f-bomb in it, but yet advocates for un-offensive posting and has a censoring protocol in place.

My opinion from having been around the industries for awhile. :)

Not offensive, but if someone new would come to this site, and see that, it very well might turn them away.

Sander....f*ck 'em if they can't take a joke.

I thought it conveyed your thoughts quite clearly. As in 'dude...check out this f*cking fast graphics card'.

As for professionalism--the true professional knows when its time to add some humor into things and when to back away. If it turns someone away from the site--then so be it. You run your site the way you want to run your site.

If you used slang like this all the time then you'd be unprofessonal and I wouldn't read your stuff. However, in this one instance it certainly got my attention and made me want to read the article.

Now, about posting in Danish/Dutch..or whatever it was that po'ed more people off than this... :)

I agree with Max. It doesn't bother me, but it is affecting your reputation. While you might be catering to a casual atmosphere, you are also pushing some of your audience away by using that language. It's really up to you of whether or not you care. The question is whether or not you are interested in that percentage of people that are turned away by that type of atmosphere. On the other hand, you can't please all of the people all of the time.

Alright, thanks for the quick replies. Obviously I am not about to make a habit of using the f-word, but within the context of the column it seemed fitting. However, some of you argue that this one instance of me using the f-word voids my professionalism, but honestly I have to disagree. If my professionalism is judged by the words I use or the way I pitch a phrase then these words seem to be paramount over the message contained within them, so my question to you would be; what are you here for, the message or the correct use of the proper words? I hope it isn't the latter, as we're not a English literary website.

After watching that thread, I am happy to see that Sander also likes to "Joke" sometimes, and definately would love to see another thread like that. You cannot expect a human being to be 100% "strict" in everything.

Anybody has a question about Sander professionalism?..Articles on this thread says, nobody can be more perfect and professional as Sander is....give him a break.

Was it funny? -> yes
Was it offensive? -> if its funny it cannot be offensive
Professional? -> Ofcourse ! a good review like that needs an applaud

Or must I say Nvidia fans are not pleased?

Sander-
You have a right to say or do anything you want, it is your site. Just remember that people reading have a right to think what they want about you, and how you express your thoughts is the only way they have of judging your credibility, seriousness etc. Write in the way that you'd like readers to think of you.

Personally, I'm a retired Naval Aviator (sailor with wings) who has spent a lot of time at sea and there is probably no curse word, or combination thereof, that I haven't heard or used, LOL.

I look at it this way. This is your public appearance. You are presenting yourself to the world on this website. Whatever language you use doesn't void what you know or your experience. It does, however, affect people's opinions of you. If president Bush got in front of the camera and cursed like a sailor, everyone would see that. You, me, and thousands of others wouldn't care. There are still those well-to-do prim and proper people that went to private schools or whatever that would look down on him for that. That's definitely not me, but you have to realize that there are people out there like that. It might not be fair for them to judge your professionalism by your attitude and language, but that's just how some people are.

I agree with your few points Shane, but I expect other peoples to "open-minded" also.

If..... Sir George Bush would use a F-word, I would rather laugh, becoz it would be funny to see a President using that word, by no means it would void his professionalism.

Sander,

Good one. I would remember that one should have those couple of things some people call ' ' b@lls ' ' to use this kind of humor in a serious site, but, ' ' h. s. ' ' , and reversely speaking all the biggest humankind inventions was made on matters people used to laught about. Only the courage to break to new grounds make the changes happen.

Supreet... you are _blessed_ with not having to live in a country where people's feelings have gotten far too fragile and everything you say is dissected to see if there is something they can litigate against you (take you to court over). It's become the cruelest evil you could ever imagine here... worse than rape, debauchery, enslavement, or murder... that of saying something offensive that _might_ hurt their feelings.

Boo freakin' hoo.

I don't find, nor have I found, anything offensive in this entire forum. Probably won't.

And, I'm not questioning _Sander's_ professionalism. I fully realize that he's got a tremendous amount of dubious and meritous knowledge and expertise. _I_ know this, you know this... just about everyone who frequents here knows this. All I'm commenting on is this single instance, _within_ context! I'm just mentioning that dropping an F-bomb in the title of a thread is frequently construed as unprofessional. Does he have a right to use one? Sure! Is Sander still a professional expert? Absolutely! If all things were absolute, though, we wouldn't be having this discussion, because _some_ people found it, in their _relative_ perspective, as "offensive" (which again, I don't). I'm trying to put this back into context again, and point out that an F-bomb, in-and-of-itself, isn't offensive. But it is unprofessional.

Thing is, you are judged by the words you use. I'm not judging Sander, because I know it takes _alot_ more than just words to fully evaluate someone. I hold Sander, and his staff, in very high regard. Look at my comment more as a reminder that there are people who don't subscribe to that same mentality, and snap off judgements on little things that they see only once, without fully examining the whole context or person.

If you don't want to cause a firestorm, then don't leave a book of matches out for stupid people to grab and play with.

Thanks everyone, I think the few angry and hatefull emails I got were from individuals that had less balanced personalities or perspective on the matter. I'm still wondering why some of them bothered to send an email at all, as theirs is using language I wouldn't utter in writing, and probably not in real life either, it is a severe case of the pot calling the kettle black. But as some of you correctly pointed out, some cultures view certain use of words as offensive regardless of the context, for that I apologize.

Remember ppl, the goal of the written word is to convey a thought

If you have to use improper grammer, or vulgar language (for emphasis) to most accurately convey the thought, then you have accomplished your mission

Joke'm if they can't take a f**k

ps. Sander, I am for perturbed @ you for not posting a link to the article in question in this thread, than in your use of questionable language (I didn't read the article yet)
