I have just downloaded Dawn of War and it downloaded fine. When I try to play the game it says spooge driver error and says to check to see if directx is downloaded properly. I have done this several times but the game still wont play.

hmm. i thought some smartass at best buy or similar was having a joke at your expense, but i guess not. i have no idea what a spooge driver is. try the game producer's website, maybe there's a faq there.

If that's a real driver, then the programmer that named it should be slapped for being an idiot. lol

i googled this, and it looks like some programmer somewhere is owed a severe slapping. or else he is dutch. spooge always sounded dutch to me.

it seems to be a video card driver issue and updating is alleged to fix it.

janice, do you know what video card you have? if not, follow these steps to find out (in windows xp, should be similar in other windows):
1. right click on your desktop and select properties.
2. click on the settings tab
3. click on advanced
4. click adapter

that should tell you what you have. if it says ATI something or nVidia something, go to that manufacturer's website and download the drivers. if it says something else, chances are your video card won't be sufficient and you may need to upgrade. first things first, though - find out what you do have.

It is not Dutch that's for sure (as I'm a native Dutch speaker) it however is slang for something else which I won't get into now. I'm puzzled as to what's going on here, if you could give us a bit more info, screenshots would help (alt + print screen and paste into paint) we can all get a better grasp (no pun intended) at this.

I had this exact same error yesterday (the day I installed DoW:WA). I got around the error by browsing to the "Display" folder (if I remember right...) in the install Dir. Inside were like 4 files labled ati.txt, nvidia.txt, dx9<something>.txt, and something else (sorry for the generalizations, I'm AFK right now). I read throught the dx9*.txt file and it seemed like a "don't work with these videocards" config file. I simply renamed the file by adding ".old" to the end and then my game ran fine...Weird!

Thanks Vinnie

I followed your instructions and now I no longer get the spooge error. I am at last able to play DoW WA.

Here is what I did and found:
The file that relates to DirectX is spDx9_config.txt. When you open it up it say 'spDx9_config.txt : configuration for the Dx9 PC spooge driver'. I found the file in the THQ\Dawn of War\Drivers folder. By renaming the file it seems to cause some of the DoW initialisation to fail and you have to complete a few steps to allow the game to identify the display resolution. After that the game seems to be working fine.

One again many thanks for setting me on the right track.
